Extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner dropped to Earth from more than 24.5 miles in the air in a historic fall from the edge of space in his attempt to become the world's first supersonic skydiver. Baumgartner stepped out of a capsule pulled by a 55-story helium balloon after it had reached the height of 127,718 feet. As he softly landed on Earth with the help of a parachute about five minutes later, Baumgartner raised his hands in victory. Scroll down to see the jump from leap to landing

Rather appropriate that it was on the anniversary of Yeager's flight in 1948...

He pulled his chute a few seconds earlier than necessary to allow the old man whose record he broke to retain one record ...

... longest free fall.

Everything about the jump was a class act.

Landed on his feet, took a few steps and got down on his knees.

Watched the entire 3 hours drama unfold. It wasn't quite NASA speak if you watch it, was kinda refreshing....telling Felix "good job" when he completed a small task.

And very, very good video from beginning to end. A great American to trust all of those who built the capsule, and his suit and helmet........At 720mph free fall, that was fun to watch, and him twirling in the jet stream......one would think things went terribly wrong when this was expected all along.......watch it on youtube if you can. It is worth your time.

I was amazed at the landing. Just that his knees would even hold him up.

We're 175 miles from Roswell, and we watched the balloon for at least two hours before the jump.

Watched this on YouTube. What a great event! The only irritating thing about it was the commentator. Although he was smart enough to shut up (some of the time) so we could hear the radio calls between mission control and the capsule.

I remember first hearing about Col Kittinger as an AFROTC cadet in the 90s. What a wild story it was and now to see his record broken 52 years later.

Salute to all involved.

The speed of sound is not constant. It's an equation based on the density, elasticity, temperature, moisture, etc. The speed of sound is less at 124,000' than it is at 20,000'.

Fantastic! I remember seeing pictures in either Life or Look magazine of Kittinger after he landed. He looked like he'd been mugged by a flash mob. Baumgartner looked fresh as a daisy and as if he was ready to do it all over again. Wunderbar, Herr Baumgartner!

After breaking the other records, I thought it was cool that he --- maybe had to? --- pulled his chute early? and left the old man's longest free-fall record in tact. The old man was the perfect communicator, historically speaking and personality wise.

What a brave man. Cantaloupes size bravery. The thing that spooked me was the possibility of spinning rapidly and resulting deadly G forces when you're going 600 plus MPH. He had to have some kind of camera on that helmet with footage to be used later, I would think.
