Why One Bad Debate
Sapped Obama's Strength

BloombergBusinessweek, by Joshua Green

Original Article

Posted By:nhchemist, 10/14/2012 6:16:37 PM

Until just over a week ago, President Obama’s campaign was on the cusp of doing something unprecedented in modern presidential politics: turning the election into a referendum on the challenger, Mitt Romney. Why is that so special? Because every prior example of an incumbent running for reelection in recent times has wound up being a referendum on the guy in the White House. (Snip) “Elections are not referendums, elections are choices,” said David Axelrod, his chief strategist, over the summer. But studies of what compels voters to go to the polls make it clear that Axelrod is wrong.

Comments:
I am surprised at the tone of this article. This week's Bloomberg Businessweek is totally slanted towards Obama. It concerns the election and selectively paints a positive image of the last four years. In the first few pages it shows a flat median family income instead of rising income for two years and then a fall back of ~$3500 over the last two years.

FTA - "His advisers have long believed that a weary public has no patience for grand ideas or presidential self-applause. So Obama’s strategy has focused primarily on going after Romney—until last week, with remarkable success."

obama applauds himself all the time so the voters should be quite tired of him. He applauds himself when he has nothing to applaud. He's been running against Romney's record and on for his own record. The media's ability to make that work ended when the people got a chance to hear the real Romney and not the one made up by obama and the media tramps.

Many voters didn't know who Romney is. For the past 6 months, the Obama campaign had been defining Romney to voters (and of course, he was the Scrooge McDuck, evil rich dude sitting on top of his piles of money). These voters didn't really want to vote for Obama, but they also didn't want to vote for the caricature that the Obama campaign painted of Romney. The debate showed these undecided voters two things: 1. That the Obama campaign lied about who Romney was (thus destroying their own trustworthiness), and 2. Romney demonstrated that he was the type of guy that these voters would affirmatively want to vote for. Those two points are a lethal combination for a president who took a bad economy and made it worse. Now Obama has nothing to hang his hat on, except getting the far left out to vote. Therefore, expect a nuclear Obama in the next debate. There will be an intentional mutual-assured destruction so that Obama will motivate the wacko left and so that (Obama hopes) Romney will take the bait and lower his own approval ratings.

Romney appears to have the advantage of not being a lying sack of sheeite-sandwiches.

Perhaps that will help in the coming election.

and mr barack was wrong not to skip the debates.
There were no presidential debates in 1964, 1968, 1972.

He never had any strength to begin with, Romney just exposed that fact.

The debate sapped Obeyme's strength because, for the past nearly four years, his brain cells have been on "cruise control" at a crawling pace, and suddenly, without the benefit of a teleprompter, his rusty brain had to kick into high gear.

Expect more of the same for the next debates. Barry just isn't used to having to think on his own.

A senior at Northeast High School in Clarksville, Tenn. has been suspended for 10 days and faces a multitude of additional punishments including criminal charges because school officials found a knife belonging to his father inside his father’s car. NASHUA -- Thomas Pappas, chairman of the Nashua Police Commission, voluntarily resigned from his position on Wednesday, about three weeks after his involvement in state Rep. David Campbell´s duck killing incident was revealed. "He regrets greatly his role and the events of Dec. 23," Attorney Jim Rosenberg said of Pappas. "He is deeply saddened by the fact that he is resigning his post now." Campbell called Pappas after he had a couple of drinks and ultimately ran over several mallard ducks with his BMW, killing five of them on Dec. 23 outside of the Crowne Plaza.

NASHUA — Two city officials say Police Commissioner Thomas Pappas should resign because of his involvement with state Rep. David Campbell and an accident in which the lawmaker ran over and killed five ducks. "Commissioner Pappas should resign, but does not seem inclined to do so," said Alderman Ken Siegel, Ward 9. "... Now, we can only sit idly by and hope that the governor puts ethics ahead of politics." Members of Nashua´s police commission are appointed by the governor.

Here is how New Hampshire’s so-called “health insurance exchange” under Obamacare will work when it comes online Jan. 1. Granite Staters who need health insurance and have not found it through an employer or the actual marketplace will come to this government-created “market,” where a grand total of one insurer will offer plans. Every one of the plans offered by the single participating insurance company will have to provide government-mandated minimum coverage that starts at $498.79 a month. This is “choice” under Obamacare.

Via Matt Lewis, here’s Maverick once again demonstrating that “cordial relationship” in politico-speak means “two people who can’t publicly admit to hating each other but obviously do.” And it’s a cheap shot. Cruz’s point yesterday at CPAC was that Dole, McCain, and Romney lost because they weren’t conservative enough. That’s not because they’re gutless — he said specifically that they were “good” and “decent” men — but because they’re not committed, full-throated ideologues, even less so when they’re fighting for purple states in a national election. We can debate whether that’s true but there’s nothing offensive in raising the subject.

What’s been said of confession — that it is good for one’s soul but bad for one’s reputation — can also be true of testifying to Congress, so Lois Lerner has chosen to stay silent. Hers, however, is an eloquent silence. The most intrusive and potentially most punitive federal agency has been politicized; the IRS has become an appendage of Barack Obama’s party. Furthermore, congruent with exhortations from some congressional Democrats, it is intensifying its efforts to suffocate groups critical of progressives, by delaying what once was the swift, routine granting of tax-exempt status. One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey
