| Saturday Night Live's opener took on the vice presidential debate, with Jason Sudeikis as an overly enthusiastic Joe Biden and Taran Killam as his thirsty, "shark-eyed" opponent Paul Ryan. The skit poked fun at Biden's fantastically over-the-top debate performance, his laughter and incredulous facial expressions. (Snip)"A reminder that your performance tonight is extremely likely to affect the outcome of the election, so just have fun with it," Raddatz begins the skit. "Do I sound like Jim Lehrer? This is the way a parody works. Select a person, identify key characteristics of that person, and magnify those characteristics greatly, to create humor.
The SNL skit was unable to do that, because old joe was so over the top, it was impossible to magnify his characteristics.
So the skit fell sort of flat. And the black runner who came in at the end? Completely unfunny.

Expect Obama to take a page from Biden in the next debate. Wise King Barky will interrupt, hector and harass Romney all night. When you can't debate the facts or your actual record, divert, distort and distract. That's all Obama has.
I hope Mitt Romney is smart enough to prepare for the excrement about to be hurled at him.

I saw it and it wasn't funny. #2 is exactly right, it would be impossible to attempt a skit on what was perfect comedy at the real debate. They certainly didn't do any favors to Paul Ryan.

The current crop of Saturday Night Live writers don't understand parody or satire -- something gifted comedic writers intuitively "get." The show hasn't been funny for years. But then, none of the NBC "comedies" (e.g. 30 Rock, Parks & Recreation) have been funny. I watched the new much-ballyhooed "Animal Practice" after reading about it in several publications and it was unwatchable. Too bad.

No real lol moments but the one who played Biden was pretty good. The Ryan character looked and acted more like Johnny Carson.
They'll never come close to the genius of the early SNL players: Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, and Garrett Morris. A good book on those early years is ''Wired,'' a Belushi biography.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has permanently revoked the federal firearms license of East Windsor, Conn., gun store owner David LaGuercia, whose shop reportedly sold guns used in the Newtown school massacre and a second Connecticut mass shooting. Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.

Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

In the 2014 budget he announced last week, Obama proposed a more accurate way of calculating the inflation rate for annual cost-of-living increases in Social Security. It’s a technical change in pursuit of honesty and good government. And if adopted, it would cause benefits to grow more slowly, though almost imperceptibly so. Republican leaders in Congress ought to be delighted since they had “championed”—Obama’s word—the idea in the first place. Then came the catch. LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends. Winters was a pioneer of improvisational standup comedy, with an exceptional gift for mimicry, a grab bag of eccentric personalities and a bottomless reservoir of creative energy.
