| SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif. — Authorities say a 62-year-old employee was cooked to death at a Southern California seafood plant for tuna maker Bumble Bee Foods. The Whittier Daily News reports Jose Melena was found Thursday shortly before 7 a.m. at the plant in Santa Fe Springs. California Division of Occupational Safety and Health spokeswoman Erika Monterroza says it’s unclear how the man ended up inside a cooking device called a “steamer machine.” The state department has launched an investigation into the accident. There are so many quips I could say but out of respect for a man's life I will keep them to myself. I like tuna but I am not sure if I will ever buy Bumble Bee again. I hope he had a heart attack or a stroke and was dead before he was steamed. This gives me the chills.

I don't like Bumble Bee anyway, so I have no problem leaving it off my grocery list. This is not to be disrespectful to the unfortunate man, but you have to wonder how carefully the company checks its production.

"Steamer machine" sounds like a cannery retort, where the cans of food are cooked after being filled and sealed.
I remember a similar sort of horrible death in the early Eighties where a worker at a charcoal plant climbed into a ribbon blender (where the ground charcoal is mixed with starch, sawdust, and other ingredients) to clean it. He didn't follow proper lock-out procedures, no one knew he was in the blender, and someone turned it on. He was chopped up.
This guy could have been performing maintenance and not locked out the circuit breaker for the steamer. (Or maybe it was murder.)

I found a dead roach on the inside lid of a Chinese entree once. The thing was spreadeagled and had clearly been steamed to death. It's got to be a horrible way to go for any species.
I hope the guy was already dead.

Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.

Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends.
