Compared to 50 years ago, we are now halfway to Russia where political speech is concerned. We are now beaten up, humiliated and threatened for criticizing Zerobama. Can imprisonment be far behind?
I used to say the only difference between Russians and Americans is that the Russsians know they aren't free.

Agree with OP ... it's hard to feel sympathy for these gals, whose purpose seems to have been to gain notoriety with truly obnoxious behavior.
Their "act" reminds me of the incident at St Patrick's Cathedral some years ago.
This was when the radical homosexual group "Act Up" interrupted the service, screamed profanities, and threw condoms at the worshippers.
As far as I know, nothing happened to the "Act Up" bullies. Do I think they should have been thrown in a gulag? No. But a hefty fine and an apology to the church would've been nice.

If you ever tried to listen to their "music", maybe you'd understand Putin's reason for throwing them in prison. But then PR was probably never about the "music" anyway. Political protest has it's consequences in a repressive dictatorship.
Think how powerful Russia would be with a free society. The Russians are very smart and creative people. They might be more dangerous as a free society. On the other hand, maybe not.

ONLY a handful of peace-time politicians can claim to have changed the world. Margaret Thatcher, who died this morning, was one. She transformed not just her own Conservative Party, but the whole of British politics. Her enthusiasm for privatisation launched a global revolution and her willingness to stand up to tyranny helped to bring an end to the Soviet Union. Winston Churchill won a war, but he never created an “ism”. The essence of Thatcherism was to oppose the status quo and bet on freedom—odd, since as a prim control freak, she was in some ways the embodiment of conservatism.

The AP says most of the pardons were granted to criminals convicted of low-level offenses, though not all were small-time offenders: Most were for people convicted of selling or possessing drugs. However, Robert Phillip Brown was convicted of murder. He was paroled in 1996 after serving 15 years in prison. ... Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”
