Bah, humbug!
No Christmas play here

Davis Enterprise [CA], by Bob Dunning

Original Article

Posted By:beancounter, 10/12/2012 10:45:01 PM

If you’re not already sitting, you’re best advised to do so now. Yes, in another one of those “only in Davis” moments, officials of the Davis Joint Unified School District have stepped in to cancel Emerson Junior High School’s production of a stage version of Charles Dickens’ 1843 classic, “A Christmas Carol.” The reason: that ugly word “Christmas.” Students in the play were informed of the decision at Monday’s rehearsal. The drama teacher in charge of the production, Gina Smith, then sent an email to parents of the students involved explaining how the play had been unceremoniously taken away from them

Comments:
It's not even Halloween and the War on Christmas has already started.

I guess you're not allowed to say, "God bless us all, everyone." Honestly, they said the word "Christmas" was a major issue.

If you hate Christmas, stay home. Don't take it away from a bunch of hard-working kids.

Hope the PTA (Oops, not them; lets try again)

Hope the Christian parents get themselves in gear and take this stage production private.

Find an appropriate venue and sell tickets. Get a sponsor to front some money.
Advertise and make it an evening like the Chick-fil-A day. Lines around the block.

Publize it here and get small donations from across the fruited land.

Don't say merry krissmas to people, always say merry Christ's Mass. That will drive the liberals who hear you say it nuts, and as yet there is nothing they can do about it since it's free speech. Also always refer to Santa Claus as Saint Nicholas. Hearing the word saint is to a liberal like seeing a crucifix is to a vampire. Christmas is always such a great time to drive liberals crazy if you say things right.

At our middle school (Indiana) our 8th graders actually study "A Christmas Carol" and then go to a local production of the play. They learn all about Charles Dickens and some of the other fine stories he wrote. Everyone has a good time and are no worse for wear because of that devil word "Christmas".

Good news! I was reading through the comments at the article's end, and the director said the play's being reinstated.

I'm glad to hear the play is being reinstated but that's not the point.
Enough of the political correctness. There is nothing offensive about The Christmas Carol. It's a story about correcting mistakes in judgment, love and charity.

It's time to stand up for decency.

It appears that Hannukah was a pretext and reason was really "Christmas." Hence their attempt to gain permission to change the name of the play to remove Christmas from the title. As a Jew, I am offended and tired of being used by the anti-Christians as an excuse for their anti-Christianity. Man up and admit you are anti-Christian, Mr. Superintendant, et al.

The play is being reinstated, but the explanation doesn't bode well for Christians. If the people of Davis have any sense at all they will fire every single member of this idiotic school board.

However, I know that UC Davis dominates the town of Davis, and that pretty much guarantees that any sanity will be quickly eradicated

Let everyone who wants to eliminate Christmas be forced to work that day. It should not be a holiday for them.

Since 90% of literature, art and history in the Western world is based upon Judeo-Christian values...then I guess we should ban reading, musuems, art, history, poetry, etc.

Just teach mathematics - religious neutral.

Every parent of the children who were prevented from participating should one, remove their children from the school and then sue the district for numerous torts.

The progressive eradication of all matters Christian by Progrssive socialists from our public life has spawned new generations of rootless kids and young people, adrift on the sea of life. Is it any wonder they espouse, free sex, abortions and drugs and crime? - they have no longer any moral compass to guide them - and I fault the massive public

They were afraid that people would recognize that early in the play Scrooge was a Democrat (in favor of the poor being taken care of by tax dollars and not giving anything to charity as well as miserable and unpleasant), while at the end of the play he became a Republican (providing charity to those in need and being happy).

My National Journal colleague Ron Brownstein wrote a column for last week’s magazine that I thought was the most important piece of the week. In it, he argues that “large portions of the Democratic base still don’t understand the political and economic dynamics of the party’s changing electoral coalition.” Brownstein is absolutely right. For liberals, Democrats, and others to argue that Social Security and Medicare should not be touched in any way sends the message that we are just going to run up the tab and send the bill to the millennial and subsequent generations. This story was co-produced with NPR. Imagine filing your income taxes in five minutes — and for free. You´d open up a pre-filled return, see what the government thinks you owe, make any needed changes and be done. The miserable annual IRS shuffle, gone. It´s already a reality in Denmark, Sweden and Spain. The government-prepared return would estimate your taxes using information your employer and bank already send it. Advocates say tens of millions of taxpayers could use such a system each year, saving them a collective $2 billion and 225 million hours in prep costs and time, according to one estimate.

OAKLAND, Calif. — In recent months, journalists covering crime and other stories here have themselves become victims of crime, robbed of expensive cameras, sometimes at gunpoint. In less than a year, every major television news station in the Bay Area has been a victim, some more than once. One experienced newspaper photographer has lost five cameras. In the most brazen episode, a group of men punched a KPIX-TV cameraman last November while he was filming at midday in front of an Oakland high school. The robbers fled with his camera while it was still recording.

Sacramento — In his seven-year career with the Denver Broncos, running back Terrell Davis, a former Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, dazzled fans with his speed and elusiveness. At the end of his rookie year in 1995, he signed a $6.8-million, five-year contract. Off the field he endorsed Campbell´s soup. And when he hung up his cleats, he reported for the National Football League Network and appeared in movies and TV shows. So it may surprise Californians to find out that in 2011, Davis got a $199,000 injury settlement from a California workers´ compensation court for injuries related to football.

For more than three decades, Chinese women have been subjected to their country´s brutal one-child policy. Those who try to have more children have been subjected to fines and forced abortions. Their houses have been razed and their husbands fired from their jobs. As a result, Chinese women have a fertility rate of 1.54. Here in America, white, college-educated women—a good proxy for the middle class—have a fertility rate of 1.6. America has its very own one-child policy. And we have chosen it for ourselves. It´s a measure of how little he values the special relationship — and a sign of his own smallness. Back in more gracious times, vice presidents routinely attended funerals of foreign dignitaries. As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.
