| WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Justice Department is going to allow members of federally recognized Indian tribes to possess eagle feathers, although that's a federal crime. This is a significant religious and cultural issue for many tribes, who were consulted in advance about the policy the department announced Friday. The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and other federal wildlife laws criminalize the killing of eagles and possession of feathers and bird parts, but the Constitution and federal laws also give tribes local sovereignty for self-government. I thought that the Smithsonian, or some government organization, keeps a stash of eagle feathers for American Indian tribes so that no eagles will be harmed by the plucking of feathers. Anyone else remember this bit of wisdom?

In New Mexico, Indians have always possessed eagle feathers, iirc. Usually, they collect them from the ground.

Hundreds of employees from stores such as McDonald´s Corp., Macy´s Inc. and Victoria´s Secret walked off the job today in Chicago for higher wages, three weeks after a similar strike by fast-food workers in New York. The employees marched in the Chicago Loop and near the Magnificent Mile shopping area, calling for $15-an-hour pay, 82 percent more than the state´s minimum wage, and the right to form a union without intimidation. The one-day strike was arranged by the Workers Organizing Committee of Chicago, a group of retail and food workers, according to a statement yesterday.

A bullet point on Page 18 of President Barack Obama’s 2014 budget sounds ominous: “Prohibit Individuals from Accumulating Over $3 Million in Tax-Preferred Retirement Accounts.” That it appears in a section titled “Strengthening the Middle Class” is odd since such a proposal would seem to undermine the goal. Why, at a time when the government is looking to reform entitlement programs because it can’t keep the promises it has made to future generations, does Obama want to reduce the incentive to save? It makes no sense. Suddenly, the political agenda becomes obvious.

MORRISTOWN — A former Boy Scout leader from Morris Plains — already accused of sexually assaulting two members of his troop — has been indicted after allegedly showing a friend child pornography.(snip)Those charges allege he assaulted two members of Parsippany-based Boy Scout Troop 173 between 1997 and 1999 on multiple occasions. The investigation was prompted by two former members of Troop 173 coming forward, according to a statement from the prosecutor´s office at the time. Americans dislike all four of the nation’s top congressional leaders, according to a poll released Wednesday, with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi leading the way in unpopularity. Pelosi, the target of extensive GOP attack ads over the years, is viewed unfavorably by 48 percent of Americans in the Gallup poll. Only 31 percent have a favorable opinion of the former House Speaker. The same number have a positive opinion about current House Speaker John Boehner, with 41 percent having an unfavorable.

The Patrick administration clamped down the lid yesterday on Herald requests for details of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s government benefits, citing the dead terror mastermind’s right to privacy. Across the board, state agencies flatly refused to provide information about the taxpayer-funded lifestyle for the 26-year-old man and his brother and accused accomplice Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. Two unnamed U.S. officials have told the Associated Press that the surviving suspect in the Boston bombings was unarmed when police captured him hiding inside a boat in a neighborhood back yard. The report contradicts the Boston police department´s own account of Dzhokar Tsarnaev´s capture on Friday - after commissioner Ed Davies described a firefight between him and officers before the terror suspect was captured. The one clear thing that came out of last week´s chaotic activity in Boston, Massachusetts is that real reporters were missing. For that matter, they´ve been missing since last year´s attack in Benghazi. From Benghazi, the Gosnell abortion trial, gun control debates, immigration and then the Boston Marathon bombings, television news reporting has become positively painful to watch. The First Amendment to the Constitution grants freedom of the press but this was supposed to endow it with a responsibility to be the people´s watchdog. The modern Fourth Estate represented by the mainstream media has made a mockery of this privilege.
