Gov't to allow Indians to
possess eagle feathers

Associated Press, by Pete Yost

Original Article

Posted By:Scottyboy, 10/12/2012 6:02:10 PM

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Justice Department is going to allow members of federally recognized Indian tribes to possess eagle feathers, although that's a federal crime. This is a significant religious and cultural issue for many tribes, who were consulted in advance about the policy the department announced Friday. The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and other federal wildlife laws criminalize the killing of eagles and possession of feathers and bird parts, but the Constitution and federal laws also give tribes local sovereignty for self-government. Under the new policy, tribal members will not be prosecuted

Comments:
I hear there is no truth to the rumor that this was Elizabeth Warren's idea.

Ugh!

If I think I was told I was an Indian, and continue to believe it after it was proven false, can I keep these feathers?

But the College of William and Mary was required by the NCAA to remove the two feathers from the school's logo because it was deemed to be racist.

I thought that the Smithsonian, or some government organization, keeps a stash of eagle feathers for American Indian tribes so that no eagles will be harmed by the plucking of feathers. Anyone else remember this bit of wisdom?

In New Mexico, Indians have always possessed eagle feathers, iirc. Usually, they collect them from the ground.

It's okay for native indians to possess eagle feathers for their religious ceremonies but it's not okay for catholics to retain their right not to pay for abortion & sterilization. What's wrong with this picture?

Hundreds of employees from stores such as McDonald´s Corp., Macy´s Inc. and Victoria´s Secret walked off the job today in Chicago for higher wages, three weeks after a similar strike by fast-food workers in New York. The employees marched in the Chicago Loop and near the Magnificent Mile shopping area, calling for $15-an-hour pay, 82 percent more than the state´s minimum wage, and the right to form a union without intimidation. The one-day strike was arranged by the Workers Organizing Committee of Chicago, a group of retail and food workers, according to a statement yesterday.

A bullet point on Page 18 of President Barack Obama’s 2014 budget sounds ominous: “Prohibit Individuals from Accumulating Over $3 Million in Tax-Preferred Retirement Accounts.” That it appears in a section titled “Strengthening the Middle Class” is odd since such a proposal would seem to undermine the goal. Why, at a time when the government is looking to reform entitlement programs because it can’t keep the promises it has made to future generations, does Obama want to reduce the incentive to save? It makes no sense. Suddenly, the political agenda becomes obvious.

The latest victims of the sequester? The Boston bombing suspect’s lawyers. The Massachusetts public defender’s office, like other federal public defender offices around the country, was already facing furloughs because of the sequester. And that was before the Massachusetts office took on the biggest case in the country: the defense of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the 19-year-old suspect who has been charged in connection with the Boston Marathon attacks. Three weeks ago, Miriam Conrad, who heads the office, told the Boston Globe her staff was facing 16 and a half furlough days because of the automatic sequester cuts –

DALLAS — President Obama has left little mystery about how he views his predecessor. “The failed policies of George W. Bush” wiped away a budget surplus and “squandered the legacy” of bipartisan foreign policy. Mr. Bush put two wars “on a credit card,” led the country away “from our values” and “crashed the economy.” But Mr. Obama will surely say none of that when he helps dedicate the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum on Thursday. Addressing a crowd of Bush supporters and administration veterans, the 44th president will no doubt extoll the virtues of the 43rd president

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Senate is calling for drug testing of welfare recipients with a history of using illegal drugs. The Republican leader of the Senate, Del Marsh of Anniston, moved to pass a drug testing bill immediately after the Senate convened at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Most of the Republican senators and all of the Democrats had not yet entered the chamber. Marsh asked to have the bill passed using the roll call from a previously passed bill. No one objected, and the bill automatically passed 22-10. Democrats opposed to the bill rushed to the chamber to complain

When they weren´t being abused, they were ignored. Many skipped school all together. There were no fires, but the fire alarm would go off almost daily. (snip) "They´re destroying the computers. They´ve destroyed the printer. And this is how they behaved," says school principal Gemar Mills in his corner office, showing on his computer the shaky video of mayhem posted on YouTube following the 2010-2011 school year.

Under the tutelage of a friend known to the Tsarnaev family only as Misha, Tamerlan gave up boxing and stopped studying music, his family said. He began opposing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He turned to websites and literature claiming that the CIA was behind the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and Jews controlled the world.

The Patrick administration clamped down the lid yesterday on Herald requests for details of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s government benefits, citing the dead terror mastermind’s right to privacy. Across the board, state agencies flatly refused to provide information about the taxpayer-funded lifestyle for the 26-year-old man and his brother and accused accomplice Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. On EBT card status or spending, state welfare spokesman Alec Loftus would only say Tamerlan Tsarnaev, his wife and 3-year-old daughter received benefits that ended in 2012. He declined further comment.

Since the Boston bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was captured, there’s been quite a debate over his Miranda rights and how to treat him — given that he’s a United States citizen. An Associated Press report out this morning is sure to add fuel to the fire. As soon as he was read his Miranda rights, it says, Tsarnaev stopped talking. The report notes that Tsarnaev was read his rights 16 hours after his interrogation had began. Then, he fell silent: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev immediately stopped talking after a magistrate judge and a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s office entered his

The new logo for the University of Connecticut’s sports teams is a terrifying husky dog that calls to mind images of sexual assault, says one student. The new logo was unveiled last week, receiving mixed-to-negative reviews from UConn fans who preferred the older, cuter husky dog. But one student went much further, criticizing the new, meaner logo for being a pro-rape symbol. In an open letter to UC President Susan Herbst, self-described feminist student Carolyn Luby wrote that the redesigned team logo will intimidate women and empower rape culture. The one clear thing that came out of last week´s chaotic activity in Boston, Massachusetts is that real reporters were missing. For that matter, they´ve been missing since last year´s attack in Benghazi. From Benghazi, the Gosnell abortion trial, gun control debates, immigration and then the Boston Marathon bombings, television news reporting has become positively painful to watch. The First Amendment to the Constitution grants freedom of the press but this was supposed to endow it with a responsibility to be the people´s watchdog. The modern Fourth Estate represented by the mainstream media has made a mockery of this privilege.
