Foul play! Just five per cent

kit for breast cancer cam-
paign goes to charities

Daily Mail [UK], by Emma Reynolds

The NFL's involvement in Breast Cancer Awareness month has come under fire after claims the league is profiting from the cause. Players have been wearing pink caps, shirts, elbow pads, and boots and flashes of the colour have adorned towels and parts of the field throughout October across the U.S. Fans can buy pink items from the National Football League shop, or bid in auctions for products seen during games. The proceeds ostensibly go to help support the fight against breast cancer, but critics now allege that most of the cash ends up in the pockets of NFL owners.

Keep your charitable donations close to home or to the Salvation Army.

The rest are nothing but fundraisers for themselves.

Is it too much to hope that this will put an end to the NFL's charity charade? I hated seeing the players wearing pink during the month I was receiving radiation treatments for breast cancer and I hate being reminded of it every year. I've had enough of the neon pink wrist bands and mouthguards, just stick to football.

The NFL says it supports ACS. Then makes the money on sales of trashy merchandise to fans marked up 400%, giving a pennies to ACS. The players say they are for ACS, yet charitable donations take back seats to $15 million dollar mansions, or that 30th car. It looks cheap and fraudulent.

Concur with #1 & #2. Charitable giving should not be sanctimoniously paraded.

But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

The same should apply to the United Way and its programs.

Why not just take the money they spent buying all of the sissy pink attire and give that to charity? I'm sick of the pink already.

I wish there was an option to revert to black and white TV when the NFL comes on with their absurd pink accessories. And BTW I don't need any studies to tell me this whole ribbon crusade thing is always a joke all the time. No one has ever been helped by having someone else's "awareness" (whatever that is) raised.

And why I never give to any surrogate organizations, but give directly to the charity of my choice. If we all did that the hucksters would dry up and die.

At the checkout of so many stores, the cashiers are trained to ask if I want to contribute to the Susan Komen group and I always take the time to tell them no and explain why I won't contribute. Many people have never heard about the Komen foundation and their connection to Planned Parenthood. I make sure and mention the large percentage of black babies killed by abortion and PP, if the cashier is black. I hate seeing blatant advertisements while I'm watching football. It ain't hot, and if the players are criticized for self promotion, no one else outside of football should be allowed to promote either. Where does it end?

How about just putting out the throwback stuff and use 100% of the proceeds to help the 70 year old guys who can't write their name?

Faux charity as a means of increasing female allegiances to the League.

I am involved in cancer research and we are giving $1 million to centers for cancer screening and treatment. Our administrative costs are 7% of the total. We often have to dip into our pockets to make ends meet, but the focus is making certain that the centers have the resources to conduct the screening and treatments.

Like #13 said, it's to "raise awareness". Something like all the Hollywood high-rollers have a Prius, Leaf or Tesla to "show they care", only to hop in their limos to be driven to the airport to jet off to the South of France in their private jets.

The Massachusetts college student wanted in the Boston Marathon bombing was captured wounded, but alive after hiding out in a boat parked in a backyard on Friday evening. The arrest of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev signaled the end of five days of terror set-off by the double bombing at the marathon finish line and the mayor of Boston, Thomas Menino, was quoted by the Boston Globe as taking to the police scanner to exclaim, ´We got him´. Relieved law enforcement officers began cheering and clapping after Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was arrested and is now in a serious condition at Beth Israel Deaconess

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement Friday that next week it will send airlines instructions and publish a notice lifting the grounding order. The lifting of the grounding order will be effective the day the notice is published. Lifting the grounding order gives Boeing the go-ahead to begin retrofitting planes with an enhanced lithium ion battery system. First Congressional District Republican candidate Mark Sanford today defended entering his ex-wife’s home to watch the Super Bowl with his son, saying “You’ve got to make the call as a dad.” [Snip] Earlier today, Sanford told the radio that he and his 14-year-old son were watching the game at the home of Chad Waldorf, who has an annual Super Bowl party at his home, also on Sullivan’s Island. His son didn’t like the crowd and wanted to return home at half-time to watch the game in a quieter venue, Sanford said.

It started with the false claim that a Saudi man was a suspect (he was actually a victim), something the networks ran with (including the rumour that he had been thrown into a cage) and were then forced to retract. Then there was a second “attack” at the JFK library that turned out to be an unrelated fire. Pundits weighed in uselessly, calling for the deaths of all Muslims in the world on Twitter or else somehow laying responsibility at the feet of the otherwise peaceful and democratic Tea Party (was Sarah Palin anywhere near the scene--we have the right

I´ve been in Washington most of this week for the spring meeting of the International Monetary Fund. I wish I could say there was light at the end of the tunnel, but the reality is still deeply depressing. Sorry to use cliches, but two sayings spring to mind: fiddling while Rome burns, and re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic. In "The Economic Consequences of the Peace", the British economist, John Maynard Keynes, wrote that his preference in any negotiation or arbitration was for "violent and ruthless truth telling" but there has been very little evidence of that in this week´s

Yet another pillar of the austerity edifice has crumbled. As many readers will have seen, fresh research has refuted the famous Reinhart-Rogoff paper showing a cliff-edge fall in growth to minus 0.1pc once public debt reaches 90pc of GDP. This was the paper seized upon by Tea Party Republicans, scorched-earth Schaublerians and Rehnites in Europe, our own dear Chancellor George Osborne, and Austro-liquidationists the world over, to back calls for draconian, pro-cyclical, fiscal tightening. [Snip] In fact the average growth rate for the 20 developed countries in the study is plus 2.2pc. Big difference.

Sanford’s promising chance at beating Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch in the Republican-leaning district began to fray at the edges Tuesday night when fresh details about his messy family life leaked out. More unflattering information about his personal life emerged Wednesday, followed by a decision by the National Republican Congressional Committee to back away from the former two-term governor and ex-congressman.

Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes--six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either. Why did the no-brainer bill fail? Four reasons:

We are still speculating about virtually everything right now, but I feel as though I need to explain why I find the quick and easy conversation about Muslims being radicalized in America to be so illogical and laced with bigotry. Of course, there is a global violent jihadist movement, loosely organized, that wants to recruit young men to influence policies at home and abroad and perhaps usher in the global caliphate. That ideology motivates some Muslims to kill innocent people. But you´re allowed to be a radical Muslim in America.

While the media are bearing the brunt of public skepticism over the handling of the Boston bombing, the behavior of government is also eroding public trust. Yesterday´s promised but cancelled news briefing is just one symptom. Andrew McCarthy of PJM notes that "Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday´s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon," and that part of it is the natural outgrowth of the desire of investigators to keep the details of their investigations secret, so as not to alert suspects.

It failed to advance in the Senate, with a vote Wednesday afternoon of 54 to 46.
