House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi came to the Chronicle for an editorial board meeting Wednesday. I used the opportunity to ask Pelosi about her most famous and quoted statement from 2010. On March 9, 2010, Pelosi said of the Affordable Care Act, “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of controversy.” What did you mean by that? I asked. Pelosi said that the quote “was taken out of context” and it is most often quoted “by the far right.”
Earlier this summer, prominent Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi, announced plans to run on a pro-Obamacare platform for the 2014 elections. Over the weekend, Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn reconfirmed those plans. The House assistant Democratic leader said on Sunday that his party will campaign on President Obama’s controversial healthcare law in 2014. “We will be running on ObamaCare in 2014,” Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) said during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “In fact, we set it up to run on it in 2014,” he continued.
“YOU’RE A BACK STABBER!” That’s what sources say Hillary Clinton accused her old love rival Barbra Streisand of being while in a fury over a salacious TV mini-series that threatens to blow the lid off her embarrassing marriage secrets. The former secretary of state fears the miniseries could destroy her run for the White House in 2016. Now she’s blaming the legendary singer for not stepping in after learning that former daughter-in-law Diane Lane would play Hillary in the multimillion-dollar production. “Hillary was in a rage with Barbra,” said a source. (snip)Sources say Hillary will do whatever it takes
Put out the lawn chair, set the alarm and maybe bring something to wet your whistle while you gaze into the nighttime sky — the year´s best shooting star show has started. August´s annual Perseids meteor shower peaks Sunday and Monday, promising perhaps 70 meteors an hour those evenings. "The Perseids are the good ones," says meteorite expert Bill Cooke of NASA´s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. The Perseids take their name from their apparent origin in the constellation Perseus, the hero of ancient Greek myth born from a shower
It’s August 2013. What better time to talk about 2016? At this point, Hillary Rodham Clinton has been awarded the Democratic nomination virtually by default and declared the clear favorite to win the general election against her as yet unknown Republican opponent. That’s an overstatement, of course, but just barely. Make no mistake. The former secretary of state, former senator from New York and former first lady is in a commanding position at this very early stage. She stands far above all the others in her party who might seek its nomination.
Two British teenage girls were being treated for burns at a London hospital on Saturday after acid was hurled in their faces in the Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar.(snip)Tanzania is predominantly Muslim, and the attack happened at the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan as people were beginning to celebrate the Eid al-Fitr holiday. Some of the island´s more conservative Muslims object to foreign tourists who wear revealing clothes, as well as bars selling alcohol. One of the girls had posted on her Twitter page that she had been hit by a Muslim woman
OHIO: Muslims across the US celebrated Eid on the same day to everyone’s joy and relief. Mosques overflowed with happy worshippers who stood as one ummah in prayer and thanksgiving, enjoying the mild weather, treats and spiritually motivating sermons of the day. US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle also sent their warmest greetings to Muslims celebrating Eid Al-Fitr around the world, calling it "part of a great tapestry of America´s many traditions."
CHARLOTTE, NC - Local civil rights group True Healing Under God (T.H.U.G.) in collaboration with Temple Church International is holding a countywide workshop this weekend. The self-development workshop is for black boys ages 8-16. It will focus on character improvement, godly principles, discipline, respect, "pulling up their pants", and learning more about the Trayvon Martin case. T.H.U.G. says the concept is called "Save Our Sons" and mothers around the county have responded. The group hopes to reach 100 black males.
ISLAMABAD,: A suicide bomber was killed by security guards while trying to blow himself up at Ali Masjid in Barakahu on Friday. According to an Islamabad police spokesman, the security guard spotted the suicide bomber at the entrance of the Masjid and shot him dead instantly. He said the bomber started firing indiscriminately as he wanted to enter the mosque, where people were leaving after offering Friday prayers. The guard Ameen Hussain Shah, who was injured in the firing, later died at Government Polyclinic Hospital. Police officials arrived on the scene and cordoned off the area around the mosque.
America´s foreign policy has gone into a tailspin. Almost every major initiative from the Obama administration has run into sharp, sometimes embarrassing, reverses. The U.S. looks weak and confused on the global stage. This might come as happy news to some opponents of the administration who enjoy seeing Barack Obama fail, but it shouldn´t. America´s failure in international strategy is a disaster-in-the-making for its allies and for the people who see the U.S. model of liberal democracy as one worth emulating in their own nations.
George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer acquitted in the murder of unarmed black Florida teen Trayvon Martin, sought to buy a bulletproof vest and a home-security system while out on $1 million bond, according to records released Thursday. The Seminole County, Fla., Sheriff´s Office released a 57-page log obtained by USA TODAY that recorded Zimmerman´s activity last year and this year while he was connected to a GPS system via ankle monitor. Zimmerman was court-ordered to GPS monitoring as a condition of his pre-trial release, said Kim Cannaday, public information officer of the Seminole County Sheriff´s Office.
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram on Thursday to his old sparring partner, former U.S. President George W. Bush, wishing him a quick recovery from heart surgery. It may have been coincidence that the Kremlin released details of the telegram a day after Barack Obama pulled out of a planned summit with Putin, but little is left to chance in Russian politics. The warm words to the man who once said he looked Putin in the eye and got a "sense of his soul" highlighted how different the relationship
Users have one option: Slap her for speaking. Although several women´s rights organizations have condemned the idea, an anti-Hillary super PAC has refused to remove "Slap Hillary" from their website, allowing individuals to virtually hit the former secretary of state with a click. The Hillary Project posted the clickable graphic earlier this week in which an animated Hillary Clinton stands outside the White House, and users can click "speak" or "slap," cueing a graphic hand to whack her across the face. The game had been on the internet since 2000.
While media mogul Oprah Winfrey has been promoting her new film, “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” she revealed she was a recent victim of profiling while shopping in a store in Zurich.(Snip)“I was in Zurich the other day at a store, whose name I will not mention,” Winfrey said on “Entertainment Tonight,” “and I didn’t have my eyelashes on, but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear…but obviously, ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ is not shown in Zurich. So this doesn’t happen to me unless somebody obviously doesn’t know that it’s me.” Winfrey went on to explain that she was in Zurich for Tina Turner’s wedding,
Appearing on This Week With George Stephanopoulos, Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert battled not only the Democratic panelists but also conservative pundit George Will over the wisdom of shutting down the government to prevent Obamacare funding. Gohmert strongly condemned President Barack Obama’s argument at Friday’s news conference that the GOP’s “holy grail” was enying millions of people health insurance. “That’s a false narrative,” Gohmert said. “He says we’re trying to keep people from having health care. That’s just not true. That is an absolute, blatant lie. We’re not trying to keep anybody from getting health care.
During his Wednesday appearance on Jay Leno´s "Tonight Show,´ President Obama made three factual gaffes; one of them involved the claim that cities not found along the Gulf of Mexico are. Were Obama a Republican, these gaffes would have led news coverage for the next forty-eight hours. Not only did most of the media ignore or downplay these gaffes; the Associated Press went so far as to cover one of them up. In its coverage Thursday, rather than point out the president´s geographical error, the wire service made it look as though no error was made.
Nobody tells Oprah she can´t afford a handbag. Oprah Winfrey is one of the richest entertainers in the world, thanks to her willdly successful 25-season run on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and her latest media foray with the newly revitalized Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). The entertainer earned an estimated $77 million from June 2012 to June 2013 alone, according to Forbes, but she says she still experiences racism because she is African American. Take this latest incident in Switzerland, where "The Butler" star went to attend the nuptials of good friend and singer Tina Turner last month.
The taxpayer-supported Missouri State Fair is getting a lot of negative publicity in social media Sunday following a report of a shameful stunt that occurred Saturday night in Sedalia. (Snip) Basically, a clown wearing a mask of Obama came out during the bull riding event. The crowd was asked if it wanted to see Obama “run down by a bull. Things got worse from there." Things got worse from there, which doesn’t surprise me, given the anti-Obama feeling among many fairgoers from rural Missouri, where Obama lost to Mitt Romney (at least 60-40 percent in much of outlying parts of state)
Ames, Iowa — Donald Trump delivered a blistering attack on Mitt Romney’s campaign today. “I don’t know what the hell happened with his campaign,” Trump said in a speech at The Family Leader Summit. “I just don’t get it. That was an election that couldn’t have been lost.” “Every single state that they asked me to go or do some phone calls or some television, we won in the primaries,” Trump remarked. But he also criticized what the campaign had initially wanted him to say in robocalls. “They gave me this most pathetic thing to say. I said,
During a press conference yesterday, President Obama revealed the existence of a sealed indictment in the Benghazi attacks in Libya on September 11, 2012, leaving some experts questioning whether the president broke the law. Federal law states that ´no person may disclose [a sealed] indictment´s existence,´ and that doing so may be ´punished as a contempt of court,´ a charge that carries a minimum sentence of six months prison. The announcement came as a surprise to some insiders, as the existence of a sealed indictment has not been publicly confirmed or denied by law enforcement or
During an hour-long deep dive into the growing use of food stamps in America, Fox News highlighted “the new face of food stamps.” That new face is a pina colada-sipping, lobster-loving lothario named Jason Greenslate. Greenslate, a 29-year-old La Jolla California surfer and musician who sings that he does not want a “motherfucking job” and has “fuck no” guilt about living on $200 of what he calls “free money ” — or what the government called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Benefits — while he avoids a job to hang out on the beach, sing and chase women.
President Obama took his case for ending the sequester to hundreds of disabled veterans Saturday, saying he protected their benefits from the “reckless” cuts to the federal budget but suggesting next year might be different. “It’s hurting our military. I made it clear that your veteran’s benefits are exempt from this year’s sequester,” the president said to the applause of hundreds at the Disabled American Veterans´ convention in Orlando, Fla. “But I want to tell you going forward the best way to protect the VA care you have earned is to get rid of this sequester altogether.”
Rooms have to be found for dozens of Secret Service agents, someone has to carry a selection of presidential basketballs, and of course the family dog needs his own state-of-the-art aircraft. Arriving in the idyllic coastal retreat of Martha´s Vineyard in Massachusetts, Mr Obama left behind him in Washington DC high profile debates over the budget, government surveillance and his health care reforms. Instead, he will spend the next eight days playing golf, going to the beach, and buying books from the Bunch of Grapes bookstore.
Eydie Gorme, a popular nightclub and television singer as a solo act and as a team with her husband, Steve Lawrence, has died. She was 84. Gorme, who also had a huge solo hit in 1963 with "Blame it on the Bossa Nova," died Saturday at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas following a brief, undisclosed illness, said her publicist, Howard Bragman. Gorme was a successful band singer and nightclub entertainer when she was invited to join the cast of Steve Allen´s local New York television show in 1953. She sang solos and also did duets and comedy skits with Lawrence, a rising young singer who had joined
Potential 2016 presidential contender Donald Trump spoke to ABC’s Jonathan Karl Sunday morning and reignited the birther issue that he helped spark back in 2011, questioning the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s birth certificate and wondering whether Ted Cruz, who was born in Canada, was eligible to president. “Was there a birth certificate?” Trump asked. “You tell me. Some people say that was not his birth certificate. I’m saying I don’t know. Nobody knows. And you don’t know, either, Jonathan. You’re a smart guy, you don’t know, either.” “I’m pretty convinced he was born in the United States,” Karl said.
