| Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s 2013 city budget is the calm before the storm that could make everyone forget the worst blizzards in memory. So feel free to savor the calm just a moment before stepping forth into the cold winds of reality. For the second straight year, Emanuel has submitted a reasonable, responsible budget that faces up to the city’s financial problems. Even better, this year’s budget proposal contains no new tax increases or fees of any sort, although it profits considerably from the ones he pushed through last year.

Comments:
So, according to Mr. Brown, inaction on a known problem - the underfunded pension liability - is responsible. No wonder he loves Obama.

#1, changing the law is in the hands of Springfield. Funding the pensions as required by law is entirely in Mayor Emanuel's hands.

Emanuel can't fund the pensions after years of inaction by prior administrations. Current funding would not solve the problem--it would only hurt the taxpayers. The only hope is for change in the system itself, which has to occur at the state level.

LDotters now that we are not to engage in a back-and-forth, so forgive me Lucianne, but the law is what it is. There is no guarantee that it will ever change. Emmanuel's job is to uphold current law, not future law.

Chicago Public Schools’ removal of the graphic novel Persepolis from classrooms sparked protests Friday and outcry from the autobiographical novel’s Iranian-born author. In the dark hours of Thursday morning, Feb. 28, I awoke to find CNN featuring a continuous shot of a helicopter. The network cut between a close-up and a distant dot. It was Benedict, flying from the Vatican City. This was extraordinary attention for an ordinary cardinal, because as Benedict told the throng awaiting him, “I am no longer pope.” I am not a scholar of Catholic history, but I believe we were witnessing the first time the papal throne was vacant. With due respect to all of you hardworking political consultants and TV station owners, there´s only one reason to hold an election. That´s to determine who will shoulder the oft-onerous task of governing. Now that the election is over, President Barack Obama holds that honor. So do Springfield Democrats, particularly House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton. They wanted the job. They got the job. Now they have to produce. On the national level, one clear need is immigration reform.

Somewhere around the time President Barack Obama and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie were standing in unison, while members of Team Romney reportedly were purchasing items to be given away at a fund-raiser for storm victims, it hit me. Somewhere around the time Donald Trump was bleating about the president missing the deadline and saying charities would suffer because of it — as if the money wasn’t Trump’s to do with what he pleases — it hit me.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is actively shopping for a drone that would "stalk hunters," the organization said Monday.
