| French President François Hollande potentially won the hearts of millions of future voters on Tuesday when he announced plans to abolish homework and reduce the number of pupils forced to repeat school years. The comprehensive reforms will also increase the number of teachers across the country, boost aid to disadvantaged areas and target absenteeism. The school week would return to four and a half days rather than four – a change introduced under the former administration as a cost-cutting measure. “Education is priority,” Hollande said at Paris’s Sorbonne University on Wednesday. “An education programme is, by definition, a societal programme.

Reducing the school year by two months in public schools is a GOOD thing! really it is! When you look at the lack of achievement, the political indoctrination,the overreach of government into private lives of families that would be great
What would happen is private tutorial schools would begin to fill the gap that would be affordable. Thee would be sponsored by either charities like churches or secular institutions. The kids would learn more in two months than the rest of the school year.
Oh boy if California does that then it would be the most successful educational reform in history!

If he's increasing the school attendance from 4 to 4 and 1/2 days per week, he's essentially replacing homework with more time at school under direct supervision. Therefore, there is no real change in the number of hours. In a way, I like it. Even though I've had a high level of education, I never did like homework. I was of the mind that school and home should be segregated work-wise.

The Commiefornia situation is simple...give the larded up school administrators and their teachers union cohorts more money or they'll chop a couple months off of the government babysitting operation. That'll show those parents who's boss!
Hollande is simply following the US Democrat lead...buying future voters, all while ensuring they're sufficiently stupid and lazy enough to love it. He'll worry about the money to pay for it later...much later.

Did posters here read to the last line of the article? French students attend school until 5 PM or 6 PM every day. In contrast, American students typically leave school for the day around 3 PM or 4 PM, then go home to do homework. Is is really better to do 2 hours of schoolwork at home and call it homework...or to do that same schoolwork at school and call it 'no' homework?

We at Townhall have been covering this hotly contested Senate race for months and the results are finally in: With 36 percent of precincts reporting, Elizabeth Warren has been declared the next junior Senator from Massachusetts. Warren has never held public office before and the eye-popping $40 million she raised this election cycle evidently proved more than enough to unseat incumbent Senator Scott Brown. This was the most expensive Senate race of 2012 -- by a long shot.

Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot.
