| WASHINGTON - The number of U.S. job openings fell slightly in August, a troubling sign for a labor market that is recovering at a painfully slow pace. Job openings - a measure of labor demand - dropped to 3.56 million from 3.59 million in July, the Labor Department said on Wednesday in its monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. The data casts a small shadow over recent signs of improvement in the labor market. Government data last week showed the U.S. unemployment rate unexpectedly dropped to 7.8 percent in September, its lowest level

Comments: Awesome news. Fewer job openings means (tah dah) lower unemployment rate! Not sure how that works - must be ObamaMagic.

JOLTS report completely undermines the claim that BLS data as any attachment to reality. BLS committed fraud, pure and simple. Like Libya, we will have to wait over a month to get a plausible story straightening out the crooked lies.

If job creation is falling, the employment rate should be 6% in September, before we know it we'll be at full employment.

In Silicon Valley, the employee perks are the stuff of legend. Parents-to-be at Facebook are given a bonus to help with expenses and extensive maternity and paternity leave. Software company Evernote will pay to have their employees apartments cleaned twice every month. And Google — perhaps the most generous when it comes to fringe benefits — lavishes its employees with free concierge service and a cafeteria chock full of gourmet food. While these benefits are partially a product of the intense competition for qualified tech workers, they may also be a way for companies to simply increase compensation

The state health exchanges that are central to the U.S. Affordable Care Act are costing the federal government more than twice its initial budget to complete. The Obama administration expects to have spent $4.4 billion in fiscal 2012 and 2013 on grants to states that are building new marketplaces to sell subsidized health insurance, according to budget proposals released today for 2014. A year ago, the administration had anticipated spending about $2 billion. Including grants the administration expects to make in 2014, costs for the state-run exchanges will reach about $5.7 billion. The budget overrun doesn’t include

SAN FRANCISCO — California lawmakers are considering taking some tax exemptions away from youth groups that do not accept gay, transgender or atheist members — a move intended to pressure the Boy Scouts of America to lift its ban on gay Scouts and troop leaders. Some cities have withdrawn free rent and other subsidies from the Boy Scouts over the years, but legislation introduced by state Sen. Ricardo Lara would make California the first state to target the Scouts for its anti-gay policy. The Long Beach Democrat´s bill, SB 323, is scheduled for its first committee hearing on Wednesday.

Forecasts for this hurricane season are already being released, and according to weather experts, this year could be almost as stormy as last year and that could have implications for homeowners and insurers.Meteorologists expect to see 16 tropical storms and hurricanes in 2013, according to Weather Services International. That´s fewer than last year, but still higher than the historical average of 11 per year, noted Paul Walsh, vice president of weather analytics at The Weather Channel. A retired man has fallen victim to a pet poodle hoax after his local veterinarian uncovered he had been sold two giant rodents pumped up with steroids. Bargain hunters rummaging around Argentina’s largest flea market, La Salada, have been duped into spending hundreds of dollars on what they have been told is the dog of their dreams. In reality, they’ve just been sold what locals call the ‘Brazilian rat’ – a ferret pumped up on steroids and groomed to resemble a fluffy toy poodle. The retired man was initially fooled by the $75 price tag for a pet

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A NATO airstrike in eastern Afghanistan killed 11 civilians, 10 of them children, in addition to the Taliban militants it was trying to hit, Afghan officials said. The strike late Saturday in the Shigal district of restive Kunar province near Pakistan was called by coalition forces after they and their Afghan counterparts came under an attack that killed one American advisor and badly wounded four Afghan troops. The American death was reported on Saturday, but details of the alleged civilian casualties only surfaced Sunday. Wasifullah Wasifi, spokesperson for the governor of Kunar province, said the strike

The biggest political problem faced by so-called “liberals” and so-called “progressives” in President Obama’s second term is how to prevent voters from holding them politically responsible as the public comes to realize how badly they were lied to during the first Obama term to win passage of Obamacare. (Snip) Just wait until the broad realization dawns that the harsh reality of Obamacare is that tens of millions will lose their employer provided insurance because of the perverse incentives under the program. Even the establishment CBO admits that at least 7 million, and as many as 20 million

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.

The US defence department has delayed an intercontinental ballistic missile test that had been planned for next week at an air force base in California amid mounting tensions with North Korea, according to a senior official. Defence secretary Chuck Hagel reportedly decided to put off the long-planned Minuteman 3 test until next month because of concerns the launch could be misinterpreted and exacerbate the Korean crisis. "This is the logical, prudent and responsible course of action to take," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The test was not connected to the ongoing annual

BOISE, Idaho — Authorities in eastern Idaho are investigating the shooting deaths of two men and a woman whose bodies were found in a home that contained a marijuana grow operation. The deaths took place sometime between Thursday afternoon and evening by someone who had some type of relationship with the victims, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office said. The bodies were discovered Friday outside Holbrook, a town of about 400 people just north of the Idaho-Utah state line. Authorities said a 2-month-old was found under the arm of one of the victims — 27-year-old Yavette Chivon Carter.

LOS ANGELES — The role of female talk show hosts in late-night TV network history, all 50-plus years of it, can be summed up in two words: Joan Rivers. It takes just another two — Arsenio Hall — to do the same for minorities. There´s no indication that´s going to change in the latest round of musical chairs involving "Tonight" and "Late Night." All the NBC, ABC and CBS showcase jobs at 11:30 p.m. Eastern and later appear likely to remain securely in white men´s hands. Jay Leno is handing off to Jimmy Fallon, with speculation

Audiences listen with rapt attention as she discusses the plight of women and girls in developing countries. Even a long-expected book deal announcement generates lots of chatter. Not long after Clinton stepped down as President Barack Obama´s secretary of state, the "will she or won´t she" question is already following her around like the activists who held dark blue "Ready for Hillary" signs outside speeches at the Kennedy Center in Washington and New York´s Lincoln Center. This past week, Clinton came off a two-month break

Abortion clinic employee Sherry West described an incident which "really freaked (her) out" and related to the jury how she heard a child who was born alive following an abortion scream.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf, especially since popular public tours of the White House have been canceled because of

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller, one of the towering architects of Obamacare, on Tuesday openly criticized program managers for not moving quickly enough to build the system, warning that if it gets off to a bumpy start it will just get worse. Decrying the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as way too complex, he warned the acting Medicare director that Obamacare is "so complicated and if it isn´t done right the first time, it will just simply get worse."

A nonprofit organization that works with the families, Sandy Hook Promise, said that after Obama´s speech on gun control in Hartford, he is flying with relatives of seven children and one staffer killed during December´s massacre at the school. There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

More than six months since Ambassador Christopher Stevens was assassinated by terrorists in Benghazi, the Obama administration is still trying to keep a lid on information about the attack. Congress and the American people need to know what happened the night of Sept. 11, 2012. Who did the killing and what was their motive? Why wasn´t help sent? And why did the administration lie about who was responsible? Members of Congress have asked hundreds of questions at hearings conducted by several investigative committees, but many of the most significant have been left unanswered. Although the first votes on gun -control legislation have yet to be cast, by some measures the National Rifle Association has already won. Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million.

Margaret Thatcher had more impact on the world than any woman ruler since Catherine the Great of Russia. Not only did she turn around—decisively—the British economy in the 1980s, she also saw her methods copied in more than 50 countries. "Thatcherism" was the most popular and successful way of running a country in the last quarter of the 20th century and into the 21st. Her origins were humble. Born Oct. 13, 1925, she was the daughter of a grocer in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham. Alfred Roberts was no ordinary shopkeeper.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded Monday that implementing the Affordable Care Act has been more complicated and frustrating than the Obama administration expected, largely due to Republicans who have opposed the law´s state-based exchanges and Medicaid expansion. "The politics has been relentless and that continues," Sebelius said. "There was some hope that once the Supreme Court ruled in July, and then once an election occurred there would be a sense that, ´This is the law of the land, let´s get on board, let´s make this work.´"
