| An anonymous member of the Chicago Plumbers Union is claiming the union is forcing its members to back President Barack Obama. The plumber told Bruce Wolf and Dan Proft on "The Don and Roma Show" on WLS that Plumbers Local 130 is requiring it's members to attend a massive rally tonight at the plumbers hall at 1340 W. Washington, where Governor Pat Quinn, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, will urge plumbers to support the President

OK, help me understand this as I'm not a union member. I have to pay dues to a union in order to work and they get to TELL me that I'm required to support a candidate whether I agree with the policies or not? Is that the whole picture?

#6, I am not sure if this is correct, but I suspect that the Plumbers' Union in Chicago works like the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers near me does. If you are a member of the IBEW you do not go out and apply for jobs. People who need a member of the IBEW to do a job (usually because if they use a non-union electrical worker they will have trouble with getting permits, or with goons harassing their workers), they go to the IBEW and request one (or more). The union then selects a worker to send out to do the job. If you are on the outs with the local steward (say because you admitted that you opposed Obama's election) for some reason there just won't be any jobs for you, even if everybody else in the hall is working 60 hours a week.

#8, you are talking about a hiring hall, legal under the Taft Hartley Act. A person does not have to be a member of the union run hiring hall, but I used to do a comedy act with my intro to labor relations. I had a baling hook, and would imitate how a union member would threaten a non union member who showed up for a job.
(In The Waterfront is a good example of the union hiring hall.)

You can't be forced to listen & how you vote is still private, at least they tell us so. If enough good people "go along to get along" & vote their conscience, who knows maybe the good guys, or at least the better guys will win.

#15 Illinois is probably in the bag for Zip. The union meeting is being conducted for the purpose of ensuring that everyone has transportation and ID to go to Wisconsin and vote.

For the season, ad-supported cable as a group has opened up a bigger ratings advantage over the Big Four – and has beaten the broadcasters in the 18-49 demo on a regular basis in a handful of timeslots. President Barack Obama´s bid to renew a ban against military-style assault weapons narrowly won the backing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday and headed to the full Senate, where it appears certain to fail. On a party line vote of 10-8, the Democratic-led panel approved a bill to renew a ban similar to one that expired in 2004. The measure would also limit high-capacity ammunition clips to 10 bullets.

This administration certainly loves drones, but even that ardent passion has limits. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Tuesday put a stop to production of a medal that was to be awarded to drone operators, and not a moment too soon. It wasn’t just the idea of the Distinguished Warfare Medal that offended good sense. The real outrage was ignited by the goofy idea to give it precedence over medals awarded for bravery and valor.

The pop hearthrob was initially treated by doctors backstage for up to 15 minutes before returning to finish the show. As Winter Storm Saturn heads farther east into the Atlantic Ocean, the rain and snow mixture in the Mid-Atlantic States will come to an end Wednesday night. North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass.
