| With a new Government Accountability Institute (GAI) report highlighting the threat of foreign online campaign donations making a buzz throughout the Beltway, Breitbart News has discovered blog entries on President Obama’s official website that highlight the pervasiveness of the problem. Just last week, a Canadian woman writing on President Obama’s official campaign website claims she made a campaign donation to the Obama campaign during the last election and that she intends to do so this time as well—a clear violation of U.S. election laws: “I had donated to the original campaign and will again,” she writes.

President Obama thanked Boston marathon volunteers earlier today: "Now, I’m not going to speak long," Obama told the assembled crowd. "I’m just -- he started calling me Reverend Obama, so I know -- (laughter) -- I know I was -- I don´t want to go on any longer than I need to. The main message, in addition to just giving -- having a chance to shake some hands and give some hugs, is just to say how proud the whole country is of you -- (applause) -- how grateful we are -- how grateful we are that

Joe Biden says the president of the United States is preparing to take "executive actions" to deal with guns. BuzzFeed reports: Vice President Biden told White House allies in the gun control fight Thursday that President Obama will be announcing new executive actions on gun violence in the days after the Senate voted down a gun violence bill. On a conference call with "stakeholders," Biden told gun control advocates that the fight is not over and that eventual action on gun control will come. Press were not invited to the conference call; a participant provided BuzzFeed with access.

House Democrats on Thursday morning blasted Senate Republicans for blocking progress on gun control legislation Wednesday. "Yesterday was a shameful day," said Rep. Elizabeth Esty, who represents Newtown, Conn. "I´m outraged that 46 senators prevented a compromise to reduce gun violence, which 92 percent of the American people support." Esty was referring to the 54-46 vote on a bipartisan proposal to expand background checks on gun purchases. While a majority supported that language, 60 votes were needed to attach it to the gun control bill. "Forty-six senators ignored the voices of the courageous Newtown families, who have paid

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) said at the Good Jobs, Green Jobs conference in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, “It´s our task to make sure that climate change lines up right behind immigration and gay rights as an issue where the Republicans see that if they stick with this, they’re going to run off the cliff like lemmings." He also claimed, “The polluting industries own Congress. So there really has to be, in my view, as a predicate, there has to be strong executive action.” “So it´s absolutely key that we all put pressure on the White House to take

The House on Thursday approved cybersecurity legislation that sets up a framework for companies and the federal government to share information about threats. The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), H.R. 624, was approved in a 288-127 vote despite ongoing fears from some lawmakers and privacy advocates that the measure could give the government access to private information about consumers. Ninety-two Democrats voted with Republicans in favor of the bill and just 29 Republicans opposed it. The bill secured enough votes to override a veto.

Fresh from buying three local elections, Bloomberg is going national with the same tactics. He’s spending a whole bunch of money to influence the political process while bemoaning the control that special interests have over politics. By special interests, Bloomberg means the NRA, which has nearly 5 million members. That’s more than 10 times the number of people who voted for him in the last mayoral election. (The fact that in a city of 8 million, a little over a million could even be bothered to come out and vote says it all.) It’s also 100 times

Secretary of State John Kerry praised Yankee Stadium for recognizing the city of Boston after the horrific bombing that occurred at the Boston Marathon on Monday. “This is unusual but a couple of days ago at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees posted the Boston Red Sox logo and they sang ‘Sweet Adeline’ after the third inning I take, but it was a great tribute to the way America comes together,” the former U.S. Senator of Massachusetts said proudly. The Boston Red Sox favorite, of course, is Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’ traditionally played during

More than 500 people were murdered in Chicago last year. Yet Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel still found time to berate the fast food franchise Chick-fil-A for not sharing "Chicago values" -- apparently because its founder does not approve of gay marriage. Two states have legalized marijuana, with more to come. Yet social taboos against tobacco smoking make it nearly impossible to light up a cigarette in public places. Marijuana, like alcohol, causes far greater short-term impairment than does nicotine. But legal cigarette smoking is now seen as a corporate-sponsored, uncool and dirty habit that leads

WASHINGTON — After the Senate failed to pass universal background checks for gun buyers Wednesday afternoon, Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that the House would push forward with its own version of the legislation. “We’re just not taking no for an answer,” she vowed. “We were so disappointed,” Pelosi said of Wednesday night’s vote, when the Senate failed to get the 60 votes necessary to pass an amendment proposed by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania. The amendment was hoped to have been a compromise

He doesn´t get the attention of the Sunday talk shows, or Washington´s political elite, but the Midwest´s dragon slayer, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, is emerging in some Republican circles as the surprising favorite to win the GOP nomination for president in 2016. Untainted by scandal, far from Washington´s voter-frustrating gridlock, and reinvigorated by his victory over foes who staged a recall vote, the conservative Walker is also viewed as the best candidate to sop up the Midwest white vote which, had Mitt Romney done better there, would have catapulted him into

The Senate’s Gang of Eight immigration bill offers $50 million in taxpayer-funded assistance to help illegal immigrants file for the multi-stage amnesty offered by the controversial bill. The proposed spending is intended to help illegals get “registered provisional immigration status,” which is the first stage of the legalization process. The money can be given to activist groups to support immigrants who need help “completing applications and petitions, including providing assistance in obtaining the requisite documents and supporting evidence … applying for any waivers for which applicants and qualifying family members may be eligible,”

Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes--six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either. Why did the no-brainer bill fail? Four reasons:

Protocol: President Obama declined to send a high-level delegation to Wednesday´s funeral of Britain´s Margaret Thatcher. It´s a measure of how little he values the special relationship — and a sign of his own smallness. Back in more gracious times, vice presidents routinely attended funerals of foreign dignitaries. As such, the presence of Vice President Joe Biden — if not Obama himself — would seem fitting for as significant a U.S. ally as the late Prime Minister Thatcher, if not out of warmth of feeling, then simply to represent the U.S.´ gratitude. President Obama angrily blamed the defeat Wednesday of his centerpiece gun-control proposal on lies spread by the National Rifle Association, calling it “a pretty shameful day for Washington.” “The gun lobby and its allies willfully lied about the bill,” Mr. Obama said in the White House rose garden about 90 minutes after the vote. “It came down to politics.” As he spoke, Mr. Obama was surrounded by family members of victims of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting. Also with him was former Rep. Gabby Giffords of Arizona, wounded in an assassination attempt.

Authorities on Tuesday revealed little new information about the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon, the most high-profile bombing on U.S. soil in more than a decade and a tragedy that presents a new test for President Obama. Obama, like all Americans, is standing by, waiting for answers as to who planted two bombs improvised from pressure cookers at the finish line of the storied race, and why. Three Americans were killed in Monday´s attack and more than 170 others were injured. "Anytime bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror," Obama said,

The Senate delivered a devastating blow to President Obama’s agenda to regulate guns Wednesday by defeating a bipartisan proposal to expand background checks. It failed by a vote of 54 to 46, with 5 Democrats voting against it. Only 4 Republicans supported it. Democratic Sens. Mark Pryor (Ark.), Max Baucus (Mont.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Mark Begich (Alaska) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) voted against it. Reid supported the measure but voted against it to preserve his ability to bring the measure up again. GOP Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Susan Collins (Maine), Pat Toomey (Pa.) and Mark Kirk

Mark Kelly, the astronaut husband of former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, on Thursday upbraided senators who voted against gun legislation by saying they voted “out of fear.” ”If that vote had been a secret ballot, I bet you it would have passed with 80 votes,” Kelly told reporters. He was referencing the compromise authored by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) to expand background checks for gun buyers. It failed to advance in the Senate, with a vote Wednesday afternoon of 54 to 46.

While the media are bearing the brunt of public skepticism over the handling of the Boston bombing, the behavior of government is also eroding public trust. Yesterday´s promised but cancelled news briefing is just one symptom. Andrew McCarthy of PJM notes that "Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday´s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon," and that part of it is the natural outgrowth of the desire of investigators to keep the details of their investigations secret, so as not to alert suspects.

As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.

Washington — President Barack Obama says the Senate’s opposition to a bill that would have expanded background checks for gun buyers marks a “shameful day” in Washington. He says a minority of senators decided “it wasn’t worth it” to protect the nation’s children. Obama spoke in the Rose Garden shortly after the Senate vote rejecting a bipartisan effort to expand federal background checks to more firearms buyers. (Snip) The president pinned the blame for the measures failure, though five Democrats also opposed the plan. He also said the gun lobby and its allies “willfully lied” about background check bill.

Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), is threatening to back an election challenge against Sen. Jeff Flake if the Arizona Republican votes against legislation to expand background checks. At a Christian Science Monitor breakfast on Tuesday, Kelly said he would back an opponent to Flake if the "right candidate" was available and if the senator failed to support a background check bill, according to reports. Flake, who is not up for reelection until 2018, has been close to Kelly and Giffords. But Kelly said the issue of control trumped their ties.

WASHINGTON -- A senior Democratic senator who helped write President Barack Obama´s health care law stunned administration officials Wednesday, saying openly he thinks it´s headed for a "train wreck" because of bumbling implementation. "I just see a huge train wreck coming down," Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., told Obama´s health care chief during a routine budget hearing that suddenly turned tense. Baucus is the first top Democrat to publicly voice fears about the rollout of the new health care law, designed to bring coverage to some 30 million uninsured Americans through a mix
