In Van Meter, Mitt Romney
talks up farm policy, tells
personal stories

Des Moines Register [IA], by Jason Noble

Original Article

Rural Van Meter, Ia. – Mitt Romney unleashed a rapid-fire critique of President Barack Obama’s farm policies and revealed personal stories so-far unheard on the Iowa campaign trail at a brief and windswept campaign appearance this afternoon. Romney, the Republican presidential nominee, spoke for about 16 minutes to a crowd of more than 1,200 on a century farm in northern Madison County, south and west of the Des Moines metro. In his more substantive policy remarks, Romney hit Obama, the incumbent Democrat, repeatedly on issues of interest to the farming and agriculture communities, including the estate tax, exports and regulations.

Comments:
Further down in the article he mentions how he had met one of the former Navy SEALs who was among those killed in the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

The article states that Obama refuted the points that Romney made in a side-by-side comparison but it doesn't cite specifics. Anybody see that comparison? Ever?

We farm and I noticed when this administration decided to regulate dust and whether or not our grandson can come out and work on the farm on the weekends. I also noticed that death taxes are going to rise. We paid taxes on the money we bought the farm with. We paid property taxes on the farm for forty years. How many bites do they think they get at one apple?

An awful 146-word term paper littered with grammatical errors that is barely even readable has become a potent visual symbol of the University of North Carolina´s fake classes scandal. The one-paragraph essay on civil rights icon Rosa Parks earned an A- and was exposed by former UNC professor Mary Willingham, who spent ten-years teaching UNC´s athletes before she turned whistleblower on alleged classroom corruption. The shocking essay came to light during an ESPN documentary timed to coincide with March Madness containing allegations that UNC athletes in danger of failing were encouraged to sign up for fake tutor groups designed to

WASHINGTON— The National Archives is set to release 2,500 pages of documents from former President Bill Clinton´s White House, including records from two aides, the ex-president´s farewell address and other topics. Documents released since February have covered the Clinton administration´s unsuccessful health care overhaul plan, Republicans´ sweeping victories during the 1994 midterm elections and other issues. The papers being released Friday were to include records from Clinton speechwriter Michael Waldman and domestic policy adviser Ira Magaziner and documents from Clinton´s farewell address to the nation. Other topics include Native American policy and Serbia. The records are being closely scrutinized by

The world of political news was captivated by Thursday’s report of the arrest for gun trafficking of a famously anti-gun California state senator. Yet while most other news outlets reported the incident, Politico, an outlet that supposedly leads the nation in political news, didn´t post a single story on the incident the day the news broke. This is the same Politico that managed to publish 90 separate stories on the Herman Cain sexual harassment scandal when it broke – within six days. California State Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) made a name for himself by becoming one of the most

Hmm, whom are we going to believe? The occupant of the Throne of St. Peter or the current laureate in Politifact’s “Lie of the Year” award? Here is CNN’s reporting of the clashing accounts given by President Obama and Pope Francis of their conversation Thursday: The two men greeted each other with a smile and a handshake and posed for pictures before sitting down across a table from each other. They spoke privately for nearly an hour. When they emerged from the meeting, the President and the Vatican had slightly different takes on the tenor of their discussions, especially when

If President Obama opened the International New York Times when he woke up at the US Ambassador residence Thursday morning in Rome, he would have been greeted by a full-page ad from the dissident "Catholics for Choice" telling him to ignore the Pope on questions of sexual morality. In what must have been a remarkably expensive full-page ad, "Catholics for Choice" asserts that Pope Francis, whom the President was scheduled to meet Thursday at the Vatican, "seems like a very nice man..." The group says he is "our spiritual leader but not our political leader." The ad charges that the

On Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden said he believes all of the country´s illegal immigrants are "already American citizens." "You know, eleven million people live in the shadows. I believe they´re already American citizens," Biden, who may run for president in 2016, said while addressing the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. "These people are just waiting, waiting for a chance to contribute fully. And by that standard, eleven million undocumented aliens are already Americans, in my view." A Supreme Court hearing that aired all sorts of ways someone might try to assassinate the president did not bode well Wednesday for a group of protesters suing two Secret Service agents for allegedly mistreating them at a 2004 appearance of President George W. Bush. Several justices seemed concerned about whether the free speech rights of anti-Bush protesters in Jacksonville, Ore., had been violated. They were kept farther away from the president than another group that supported him, and there is no allegation that the demonstrators meant the president any harm. But the court gave no indication that it would let

AUSTIN, Texas— A federal appeals court on Thursday upheld Texas´ tough new abortion restrictions that shuttered many of the abortions clinics in the state. A panel of judges at the New Orleans-based 5th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a lower court judge who said the rules violate the U.S. Constitution and served no medical purpose. In its opinion, the appeals court said the law "on its face does not impose an undue burden on the life and health of a woman." Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has said that ´a trained ape´ could do a better job managing American interests in Afghanistan than President Obama. The retired Republican made the insult while doing a phone-in interview for Greta Van Susteren´s Fox News show on Tuesday. He argued that the President made a serious error by failing to negotiate a status forces agreement with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Gawker points out that such an agreement would effectively commit the United States to having a certain number of troops in the country for a number of years beyond the already-agreed-upon plan which

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) said the fault of struggling to sign up on the Obamacare exchanges didn’t lie with the faulty website, but with the people who weren’t “educated on how to use the Internet.” Explaining the reasoning behind the latest Obamacare delay, Reid said too many people just didn’t know to use their computer properly and needed more time. Apparently, it had nothing to do with the well-documented failings of the website that have embarrassed the White House for months. “We have hundreds of thousands of people who tried to sign up who didn’t get through,” he said.

Okay, THAT was certainly embarrassing. At the end of a joint news conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in the Netherlands on Tuesday, the applause for Barack Obama came from a grand total of one guy. One. After thanking the crowd twice for suffering through his boring, standard worn-out spiel, Obama looked around the room, expecting the usual fanfare and applause he receives from his loyal followers back home. It never came. Instead, the Leader of the Free World was met with one slow, awkward clap. Question: was MSNBC’s Chris Matthews in the house?

According to the AP-GFK survey released Wednesday, 59 percent disapprove of Obama´s job performance while 41 percent approve. A similar poll released by the news outlet in January found 45 percent approved of him while 53 percent disapproved. Other recent polling has found Obama´s disapproval rating slightly lower, remaining in the low 50s. A CBS News poll Tuesday showed 50 percent disapproval, while Gallup has his disapproval at 52 percent. In the AP poll,

On Wednesday, Obama administration officials announced a two week extension in the deadline to enroll in the Affordable Care Act or face a penalty defined as a tax. Asked about this “delay” in the implementation of the ACA on Wednesday, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said that there has been no delay. He added that some of the users who experienced problems with the website early on need more time, partially because “people are not educated about how to use the internet.” “There’s no hiccup or delay,” Reid insisted. “We had hundreds of thousands of people who tried to sign up and

On Tuesday night two things happened. 1. A trio of Secret Service agents were sent home from Amsterdam after one was found passed out drunk in a hotel hallway. 2. The Obama Administration announced (another) extension of the enrollment deadline for Obamacare signups. At first glance, these two events have little in common with one another. But, modern politics is all about narratives and storylines. And, both of these events confirm a growing concern from the public about President Obama: That he´s just not up to governing his administration and, by extension, the country, effectively.

One by one, the myths of the Affordable Care Act have been revealed. When the curtain on open enrollment falls on March 31, the last remaining big myth of ObamaCare will be fully exposed: The individual mandate has failed. After a last-ditch effort with President Obama himself encouraging "young invincibles" to sign up before the deadline, the administration is scrambling to boost enrollment. On Tuesday, the White House announced that people who applied for coverage on the federal health-insurance exchange will have until mid-April to finish the paperwork. The mandate was supposed to be the administration´s magical elixir for the assorted shortcomings

More than six million Americans have now signed up for private insurance under the Affordable Care Act, according to the White House, with just four days to go until the end of its first open enrollment period. While traveling in Italy on Thursday, President Obama shared the news in a conference call with thousands of health-care navigators and volunteers helping enroll people on state and federal marketplaces. As the volume of consumers seeking health plans has surged -- there were over 1.5 million visits to HealthCare.gov Wednesday and more than 430,000 calls to the marketplaces´ call centers -- Obama urged those on

These Republicans are applying conservative principles to 21st-century challenges, focused on middle-class concerns like lowering costs and improving access to college, modernizing health care and reforming the tax code. They aim to broaden prosperity´s reach through markets and merit, not government and corporate cronyism. They´re also concentrating on helping the poor by changing Washington´s dizzying assortment of antipoverty programs to emphasize work and make the safety net more effective and sustainable.
