Needed: A "Voice of America" Aimed at Islam
Arutz Sheva (Israel), by Prof. Paul Eidelberg

| With internet available worldwide, the U.S. could overcome Islamists through the media, but for that, it needs confident leadership that believes in Western human rights and values. Can it be that Islam is in its death throes? This can make Islamists more dangerous than ever. Nevertheless, if America relegates Obama to the political wilderness, the U.S. should go on the ideological offensive against Islam as it did when it inaugurated the Voice of America (VOA) and beamed its radio programs into Russia and the communist-dominated states of Eastern Europe.

We need leaders that have studied enough history-and believe in our system--to be able to say, with conviction, "Every previous Crusade was a much delayed and very necessary defensive reaction to Islamic atrocities committed in a militant and unwanted expansion of a violent, treacherous, deceitful method of discriminatory and despotic government disguising itself as a religion. So will the next one be."

There´s a good chance someone, somewhere knows something. Maybe it´s a wife who, sometime back, found instructions for constructing explosives in her husband´s Web browser history. Maybe it´s a father who worries his son has fallen in with an ideologically extremist, potentially dangerous crowd. Maybe it´s a man who has seen his brother´s rage boil over to the point of violence one too many times. There´s a good chance someone, somewhere knows something that could help authorities find the person or people who set off two bombs at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 180 others.

With the fate of gun control legislation in doubt, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) accused President Obama of using the victims of the Newtown elementary school shootings as “props” to advance an agenda that would have done nothing to prevent the massacre.“I think gun control is a legitimate issue for our country to debate,” he said at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast Wednesday morning. But the Kentucky senator said that looking at the parents of Newtown victims who have spoken in favor of gun control legislation, ”I think in some cases the president has used them as props.”

Mindful that Vice President Joseph R. Biden is eyeing the presidency in 2016, President Obama declined a chance Wednesday to endorse Hillary Rodham Clinton for president. “I think we’re very far away from that,” Mr. Obama said on NBC’s “Today” show when asked if he hopes Mrs. Clinton will run. “She’s earned a rest. I know that she’s going to be able, whatever she does, to continue to be a leader and an incredibly positive force for the causes I care about and that she cares about all around the world.”

The parent company of Reading Hospital, Reading Health System, laid off 210 employees today as part of a cost-cutting plan that also will eliminate an additional 181 jobs through attrition and change the employee retirement package from a defined-benefit pension to a 401(k) plan. Hospital officials said the cuts are in response to changes in the national health care system, including cuts in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements to hospitals. A Tuesday statement from the Islamist group’s political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party, expressed “condolences to the American people and to the families of victims, with hopes for a quick recovery of those injured.” The party also says that Islamic law “firmly rejects assaults on civilians and doesn’t accept any means of terrorizing people, regardless of their religion, color, or gender

A meeting Secretary of State John Kerry was to hold with Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Saud Al-Faisal was abruptly closed to press coverage Tuesday morning. The State Department provided no reason for the change, which was announced just 15 minutes before the scheduled 10 A.M. session, but media reports have said that a Saudi national in the U.S. on a student visa is a "person of interest" to investigators probing the bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday. The person being investigated was badly injured in the attack, sources said.

The US Justice Department won´t seek the death penalty for a Colombo crime family consigliere accused of sanctioning the 1997 murder of NYPD Officer Officer Ralph Dols. US Attorney General Eric Holder issued the course-reversing directive -- made public today -- without citing a rationale for his shift. Now Colombo wiseguy Joel "Joe Waverly" Cacace, 72, will face a maximum penalty of life in prison if he´s convicted at his upcoming mob murder trial in Brooklyn federal court. Cacace is already serving a 20-year sentence for other mob crimes that has him scheduled to be released in June 2020

Protocol: President Obama declined to send a high-level delegation to Wednesday´s funeral of Britain´s Margaret Thatcher. It´s a measure of how little he values the special relationship — and a sign of his own smallness. Back in more gracious times, vice presidents routinely attended funerals of foreign dignitaries. As such, the presence of Vice President Joe Biden — if not Obama himself — would seem fitting for as significant a U.S. ally as the late Prime Minister Thatcher, if not out of warmth of feeling, then simply to represent the U.S.´ gratitude. In light of the explosions that have rocked Boston on Patriots’ Day, during the city’s annual marathon, NBC reporter Luke Russert took to Twitter to speculate that today’s horrific events could possibly be related to the 1993 government siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas — an incident often attached to conversations about “right-wing terrorism” and anti-government violence. “I was at Fenway Park w my dad and @mikebarnicle during Waco which was on Patriots Day in 1993. Speculating on possible link,” Russert tweeted following the explosions.

She accused Bush of being unavailable to the American people for the “first couple weeks” after the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. "I think we’ve got a good chance of seeing it pass if members of Congress are listening to the American people," President Obama said in an interview on NBC´s "Today Show" that aired on Tuesday. "The notion that Congress would defy the overwhelming instinct of the American people after what we saw happen in Newtown, I think, is unimaginable." As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.
