Biden’s bin Laden hypocrisy

| In the 2012 campaign, Vice President Biden has become cheerleader in chief for the operation that killed Osama bin Laden, while claiming that Mitt Romney would not have ordered the mission — which, in Biden’s telling, disqualifies Romney for the presidency. One problem with that: Joe Biden opposed the mission that killed Osama bin Laden. During his speech at the Democratic National Convention, Biden lavished praise on President Obama for the bin Laden raid: “Barack understood that the search for bin Laden was about a lot more than taking a monstrous leader off the battlefield; it was about righting

Barack Obama by approving the SEAL mission to take out bin Laden only did what the vast majority of the American people would expect any person elected as USA President to do. Under the circumstances it was not a "gutsy" decision as the liberal Democrat political operatives are claiming, but was in actuality a routine decision that American Presidents are expected to make.
The fact of that matter is that if Obama had denied the mission, as Biden advised him to do, and that denial had become public, which it would have as the CIA would have seen to that, Obama would have had no chance whatever of being re-elected.
Biden is a 100% liberal Democrat career political animal, and as such would not have a clue as to what Romney would have ordered in a similar situation, but you can safely bet that Romney would have done the right thing.

There has been a “falling out.” And? “It’s huge.” So say two Pennsylvania conservatives about the conservative backlash in the state to Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Pat Toomey’s sponsorship of a gun control background check bill. More than one activist noted that Toomey’s problems with the movement that once believed he was one of their own have been building for some time, with several incidents cited — of which his stance on the gun issue is but one. Leading to accusations of what one conservative angrily described as questions about Toomey’s “motivations.” The growing furor is raising a question

I write a lot of columns, both here at USA TODAY and elsewhere. Like pretty much everyone who writes opinion columns, I hope that people will read what I write and look at things differently as a result. It happens, sometimes. But very few have the impact of Kirsten Powers´ column on the murder trial of Pennsylvania abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell that ran in these pages last week. Before Powers´ column, the case wasn´t on the national radar. Oh, it was getting attention from pro-life writers, conservative media critics, and law bloggers, but in terms of national media, the story didn't exist.

Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), is threatening to back an election challenge against Sen. Jeff Flake if the Arizona Republican votes against legislation to expand background checks. At a Christian Science Monitor breakfast on Tuesday, Kelly said he would back an opponent to Flake if the "right candidate" was available and if the senator failed to support a background check bill, according to reports. Flake, who is not up for reelection until 2018, has been close to Kelly and Giffords. But Kelly said the issue of control trumped their ties.

Boston Bombing: The ‘Who,’ Not the ‘Why’

Make no mistake about it, yesterday’s bombing in Boston was a cowardly terrorist act. We don’t know yet who is responsible; all we know is that someone, or some group, targeted innocent civilians at an iconic American sporting event. Without getting into complex discussions about definitions, this is terrorism, plain and simple. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those killed or injured near the marathon finish line on Boylston Street. Their prayers, and those of their family and friends, are our prayers. And to those who ran toward the explosions to aid the wounded —

Eric Williams does not look like a cunning serial killer. He doesn’t look like a terrorist mastermind capable of setting off a rhetorical spasm of fear that our nation’s entire system of justice might be under attack. He looks like a guy you might see manning the grill at a Jaycees pancake breakfast or shopping for a lawn mower at Sears. He looks like what he is — or at least was: a small-town public official, a buttoned-down shirt-and-tie local lawyer. He looks ordinary. Compared with the more exotic theories of who might have been responsible for the violence

Obama’s not trying to regain Congress, he’s attempting to retain his legacy. Despite the much-reported spin about White House sights being set on retaking control of the House in 2014, it is really aiming at not replaying 2010’s devastating defeat. Obama’s first midterm loss stopped his agenda cold; a 2014 one could hurl it into reverse — and that’s not the way Obama wants to leave office and enter history. Is the White House so cynical to claim they are grasping at victory, when they are really attempting to avoid defeat? What else are they supposed to say?

Over the weekend, I wrote about how the Palestinian Authority blew off John Kerry’s efforts to keep Salam Fayyad in power as Prime Minister. Kerry’s failure, I believe, “demonstrates once again the lack of U.S. influence over the PA” and the futility of our efforts to cause it to make any concessions to Israel. As for Fayyad, I dismissed him a “PA pol.” But, plainly, that’s not how the U.S. and the EU view him. Otherwise, Kerry would not have worked so assiduously for his retention. The U.S./EU view of Fayyad is shared by many Israelis, though not necessarily the Israeli government,

Sen. Marco Rubio appeared on seven Sunday shows this weekend. At the end of his appearance on NBC’s “Meet The Press” he said something that I think deserves more attention: (Snip) It’s easy to attack immigration reform right now. In fact, if you’re a conservative pundit, it’s probably the smart career move. But Rubio is in the arena — and as easy as it is for his critics to demagogue this issue — I’d love to see them come up with a better solution. Here’s the problem. Incentives matter, and I worry that it is once again

Imagine if, during the campaign of 2008, someone had written the following: “If Barack Obama is elected president, then each year from now on the federal budget will be a trillion dollars in the red. He will pile up in two terms more debt than all previous presidents combined. Interest rates will stay at near zero; 7.6 percent unemployment will be proof of progress in creating jobs. Record use of food stamps, unemployment, and disability insurance will be hallmarks of recovery. The government will take over health care, and the costs will skyrocket. During Obama’s second term, ammunition will vanish

The trial of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, the abortionist charged with killing babies and neglecting women in his care, is now national news. There´s no bigger story on the web. Anderson Cooper covered it thoroughly Friday on CNN. The Washington Post´s executive editor pledged to send a reporter to file dispatches from the Philadelphia courtroom. My contribution, "Why Dr. Kermit Gosnell´s Trial Should Be a Front-Page Story," distilled the Philadelphia grand jury report and argued that those horrific, detailed allegations are thoroughly newsworthy by any reasonable standard. That premise is now conventional wisdom. The trial is likely to remain national news.

Washington is one big magic show. In black tie and tails, the Senate points to the bereaved parents of Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six adults were shot to death. While the audience is focused on the Newtown horror, senators vote to take up a bill that would do absolutely nothing to avoid such a tragedy. A grateful nation, fooled by what magicians call “misdirection,” applauds like crazy while, in the wings, the National Rifle Association cackles in triumph. The Senate reaches into its top hat and, with appropriate flourish, extracts a bird. We expect a dove.

Fifty years ago today, Martin Luther King Jr. penned one of the most enduring documents of the civil-rights struggle while locked in a jail cell in Birmingham, Ala. His Letter From Birmingham Jail was a clarion call for the right to civil disobedience. Though first requested by an editor for The New York Times, it was in the pages of The New York Post that these words would first be printed. This week, the Times published a very different kind of prison letter. Yesterday its op-ed pages carried an article titled “Gitmo Is Killing Me.”

Friends and allies of Baroness Thatcher expressed ‘surprise and disappointment’ last night as it emerged President Obama is not planning to send any serving member of his administration to her funeral. Whitehall sources have revealed that the U.S. delegation at tomorrow’s service in St Paul’s Cathedral will be led by two Reagan era secretaries of state: James Baker and George Shultz. Though President Obama himself had not been expected to attend, there had been speculation that he would be represented either by Vice President Joe Biden or wife Michelle. Since he first became a presidential candidate, President Obama must have spent millions of dollars in legal expenses to combat dozens of so-called "birther" challenges seeking the original documents pertaining to his birth. As president, he famously issued an electronic document on the White House website in 2011; the document purported to be his long-form birth certificate, though it is apparently a forgery. In addition, he has taken great pains to hide the paper trail of passport records, college transcripts, and other data -- all of which a prospective employer might require of a job applicant.

BOSTON -- The bombs that blew up seconds apart at the finish line of one of the world´s most storied races left the streets spattered with blood and glass, three dead, including an 8-year-old boy, more than 140 wounded and gaping questions of who chose to attack at the Boston Marathon and why. Federal investigators said no one had claimed responsibility for the bombings one of the city´s most famous civic holidays, Patriots Day. But the blasts among the throngs of spectators raised fears of a terrorist attack. President Barack Obama was careful not to use the

In light of the explosions that have rocked Boston on Patriots’ Day, during the city’s annual marathon, NBC reporter Luke Russert took to Twitter to speculate that today’s horrific events could possibly be related to the 1993 government siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas — an incident often attached to conversations about “right-wing terrorism” and anti-government violence. “I was at Fenway Park w my dad and @mikebarnicle during Waco which was on Patriots Day in 1993. Speculating on possible link,” Russert tweeted following the explosions.

She accused Bush of being unavailable to the American people for the “first couple weeks” after the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
