Labour has built a
client state in Scotland

Telegraph [UK], by Graeme Archer

At a conference dinner last night--before we all indulged ourselves by sharing our view of what the Prime Minister must say in his speech--the guests mingled in the bar, introducing themselves to each other. Our host was a public-relations company, and most of the other participants worked in some form of communications. I admitted to one woman that though my badge says Telegraph, I was really in Birmingham as a normal party activist. "What on earth made you join the Conservative Party?" she asked me. It's a good question, and I suppose there are as many answers as there are

Perhaps former Labour PM Blair is where Obama is getting some of his ideas from.

Sunny the Portuguese water dog - the latest addition to the Obama family – was bought from a breeder in Michigan for around $2,300 and seems have been born though frozen sperm, MailOnline can reveal today. Sunny was introduced to the world earlier this week as a new sister for Bo and the Obama girls through pictures posted on the White House blog but few details about where she came from - apart from saying Sunny was born in June in Michigan. MailOnline tracked down Sunny’s birthplace to Amy Lane in Attica, Michigan. Mrs Lane runs a farm and a Portuguese puppy

The nation´s top intelligence official is declassifying three secret U.S. court opinions that reveal yet more details about how the National Security Agency has spied on Americans, it was announced on Wednesday. The shocking documents show how the NSA inadvertently scooped up as many as 56,000 emails annually over three years, even though they were written by people with no connection to terrorism. The court opinions also reveal how the NSA reported the error in 2011. The court then ordered the agency to find ways to limit what it collects and how long it keeps it. White House ‘deeply concerned’ about

The White House, Members of Congress and the international community reacted swiftly, but with varying levels of intensity, on Wednesday after reports from Syria indicated that the Bashar al-Assad regime had killed at least 1,300 people with a chemical weapons attack. While the White House held its cards close to the vest, some in Congress were quick to blame the Obama administration for inviting genocide through a weak posture abroad. There are ´no consequences for Assad using chemical weapons & crossing red line,´ Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain said in a tweet. ´We shouldn´t be surprised he´s using them again.´

It is one of our most cherished national myths: Britain, standing alone in the darkest days of the Second World War, sustained only by the rhetoric, passion and willpower of its greatest prime minister. In the words of William Rees-Mogg, recalling a childhood spent glued to the radio, Churchill’s speeches “persuaded the country as a whole that the Nazi regime was wholly evil; that there could be no security in surrender”. In doing so, “they saved Britain and, through Britain, they saved the world”. Except that, according to Richard Toye, a history professor from the University of Exeter, it didn’t

An Egyptian court has ordered the release of former President Hosni Mubarak on charges of corruption. But it is not clear whether he will be freed from prison later on Wednesday. The prosecution may still appeal. The 85-year-old is also being retried on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the uprising that forced him from power in 2011. He was sentenced to life in jail last year, but a retrial was later ordered after his appeal was upheld.

Alan Rusbridger’s pushy government pen pal has been outed. Not by The Guardian but by The Daily Mail. It revealed last night that the Cabinet Secretary, Sir Jeremy Heywood, was sent by the Prime Minister to menace Rusbridger. Sir Jeremy told The Guardian editor-in-chief that the paper should “destroy the files after warning that they could fall into the hands of terrorists”. Syria gas attack is real, but

The suffering of the casualties shown lying in makeshift hospitals is consistent with the after-effects of gas. Footage of this sort is extremely difficult to stage-manage. One British official said the latest evidence was “significant enough” to warrant the statement issued by William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, on Wednesday morning. However, two questions remain. First, even if the pictures are genuine, when did the chemical weapons attack actually take place? Activists say that it happened early on Wednesday morning, coinciding with a bombardment of areas around Damascus by the regime’s forces. But this explanation is open to doubt. Mr Assad

Syrian activists accused President Bashar al-Assad´s forces of launching a nerve gas attack that killed at least 213 people today, in what would, if confirmed, be by far the worst reported use of poison gas in the two-year-old civil war. Activists said rockets with chemical agents hit the Damascus suburbs of Ain Tarma, Zamalka and Jobar before dawn. The accounts could not be verified independently and were denied by Syrian state television, which said they were disseminated deliberately to distract a team of United Nations chemical weapons experts which arrived three days ago. Meanwhile, fighting in strife-hit country has fuelled a mass exodus

The .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver was found in a black case in the trunk of a 19-year-old woman´s car after she crashed near Springfield, Massachusetts, in June. The Massachusetts State Police sent the weapon in for ballistics testing and learned that it fired the rounds that killed Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu, 29, and Safiro Teixeira Furtado, 28, outside a Boston night club in July 2012. Pope Francis is a beguiling, confusing pontif. Some in the media imagine him to be Fr Liberal, parachuting into the slums to feed the hungry and chastise the rich. Others regard him as positively medieval--all that crazy talk about demons and exorcisms ("The power of Christ compels you!"). Trenton — In case anyone had any doubts on where Gov. Chris Christie stands on climate change, he made his position crystal clear this afternoon: It´s real and it´s a problem. In vetoing a bill (S2946) that would have required New Jersey to stay in a regional program intended to curb greenhouse gases — a program Christie plans to leave by the end of the year — the governor said "climate change is real." He added that "human activity plays a role in these changes" and that climate change is "impacting our state." Christie´s words are his strongest to date in regards to

It’s hard to fathom how or why our administration ever thought the Muslim Brotherhood saw democracy as other than a means to an end — and a particularly repellent one at that — in the first place. They have also been unstinting in their massive misogyny, homophobia and rigid support of Shariah law über alles (quite literally über alles, since the Brotherhood were —

The Oklahoma teens, who face first-degree murder charges, have been named as Chancey Luna, James Edwards and Michael Jones, News.com.au has reported. But their parents yesterday protested their innocence. Jennifer Luna, whose son is suspected of firing the fatal shot, claimed her son was at home saying: "My son is not that way. My son is a good kid." Earlier today, former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer has urged Australian tourists to boycott the US in the wake of the shooting murder of the Melbourne baseball star.

Former President Bill Clinton´s foundations spent a total of $50million on travel over the past decade, $12.1million of which was spent in just one year. An internal investigation into spending at the various charities that the former President runs found that the funds used for travel costs have gone up in recent years. The audit comes as new reports have revealed that the Clinton Foundation has been ´in the red´ for years even though the charity has raised hundreds of millions of dollars each year, showing the high cost of running the worldwide charity.

CAIRO — The world’s most influential Islamist movement is in danger of collapse in the land of its birth — its leaders imprisoned, its supporters slain and its activists branded as terrorists in what many are describing as the worst crisis to confront Egypt’s 85-year-old Muslim Brotherhood. In the week since Egypt’s new military-backed rulers ordered a brutal crackdown on camps filled with protesters calling for the reinstatement of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, the group that used its organizational muscle to win the country’s first democratic elections, held in late 2011 and early 2012, has been cast into disarray.
