So much for bipartisanship
Telegram & Gazette [Worcester, MA], by Robert Nemeth

Original Article

One has to feel sympathy for poor Scott Brown. He has been an outstanding public servant, accomplished lawmaker and all-around decent human being. He has earned re-election to the U.S. Senate many times over, yet has to scramble to retain his seat in a close election. He has earned a reputation for using independent judgment in a political arena dominated by cutthroat party politics, and in return should be able to enjoy respect from both sides of the aisle.

Isn't this the truth. Brown is the poster boy for compromise, well, for representing ALL the people of Mass. as best he can. And what do they do? Sic Fauxchohontis on him, and fund her very well to lie about him, too. It does not pay to be nice. For some reason, I'm thinking of Sherman's March to the Sea this morning.

"Compromise" is what happens when Republicans crumble under the pressure.

Remember how we took the heat for 'almost shutting down the government' and now we have the sequester monster to live with.

No compromise.

Not with these criminals.

Ethics, principles, truths are not bipartisan. The only call I have heard for bipartisanship comes from the left, who want the right to capitulate. I have never seen any concessions from the left.

That bipartisan thing didn't work well for John McCain either. A good leader follows a solid set of principles and makes no deals with the devil. If you can't go to Washington with that mindset, you don't deserve to go. America will not be rebuilt by the wishy-washy, it's way too late for that.

Bipartisanship is what one side demands of the other to get their way, and justify the supidity of the outcome, including all the "unintended consequences" that lead to the next reform. It appeals to those demanding it, and the "moron voters" who like the idea that they're guiding the nation with their votes. It's the path to compromised principles that make anything possible.

Mandela´s world has gone awry

I cannot remember exactly when Nelson Mandela entered my consciousness, but I remember the giddiness I felt when they were forced to turn him loose after 27 years of captivity. I remember, after his release, how the stories and the songs that before had passively comforted me exploded with a kinetic energy that shattered the skepticism I had about my place in the world. To me, he was David slaying Goliath with a sling and stone. He was Bob Marley´s "Duppy Conqueror." "… the bars could not hold me... force could not control me..." Today, however, I am afraid that we tend to view the lives of individuals like Mandela,

Our bankrupt politics is on strident display in the manufactured crisis engulfing Obamacare. In every newspaper and on every news channel, Republicans can be found salivating over the success of their sabotage campaign, while fair-weather Democrats, fearful of upcoming elections, are backsliding on their commitment to adequate and affordable health care. And what exactly is feeding the frenzy on both sides? We are being told that it is the botched rollout of a government website where individuals can shop and sign up for health insurance. We are being told also that it is President Obama´s broken promise, the one he

President Barack Obama is doubling down on his Obamacare lies. He is now trying to erase retroactively his point-blank assurance to the American people that “if you like your health-care plan, you will be able to keep your health-care plan, period.” Drawing on his golfing experience, he is insisting on a mulligan as millions of Americans are losing the health insurance policies they have chosen because of Obamacare mandates. “What we said was you could keep it if it hasn’t changed since the law was passed,” he told Obamacare’s political beneficiaries and contractors this past Monday during a speech they

Big Brother is not only watching you. He is eavesdropping on you, stealing your metadata, snooping in your email and telling you what to eat and which illnesses you can treat if you’re lucky enough to see a doctor once Obamacare is implemented. In Obama’s 1984, Mark Tapson shows that if he were here today George Orwell would see a disturbing resemblance between the U.S. and the dystopian future he wrote about so prophetically a generation ago. Obama’s 1984 takes the reader into the dark heart of this administration, a place of omnipresent NSA surveillance, police state tactics by the

I grew up in Concord, Massachusetts, and my elementary and high-school education was infused with the history that was all around us, so I was very curious to know just how the shutdown of the nation´s parks had affected my most favorite part of Minute Man National Park -- the Old North Bridge. Had the Park Service wrapped the iconic Minute Man sculpture by Daniel Chester French in burlap, so the tourists couldn´t see it? Last night (October 9), my wife brought home a pamphlet from our local CVS pharmacy, titled "Affordable Care Act Answers." I didn´t expect to find anything in this simple booklet that I didn´t already know, but it did refer me to their website on the topic, CVS.com/insurance, which my wife asked me to check out. On the website is this Q&A entry: Do I need to have insurance? Yes. The ACA requires all Americans have health care coverage "that meets basic minimum standards." I said to my wife, "That´s flat-out false," and I sent a brief, indignant note to CVS

There have been trying times when men of foresight, faith and conviction have helped us to transcend the frailty of our human condition and to soar mightily as if we were gods. This moment in time would seem tailor-made for the appearance of such a person. The civil war in Syria, in which that country´s brutal leader, Bashar al-Assad, is beset by opponents who are just as brutal, cries out for someone to show us with clarity, charity and certainty what should be done for the good of country and the world.

The economy is still puttering along, which is to say it is still not strong enough to help a lot of average Americans. (Snip) The bottom line approach is not easily embraced by many Americans. There are those of us who continue to labor under the belief that work is a means of self-expression and that a job should contribute to the wholesome growth and sustainability of family and community. I believe the majority of Americans still hold to this view, but what would happen if our society as a whole resorted to the corporate model of life, that is, pursuing it through the bottom line?

I don´t normally display lawn signs or bumper stickers during political campaigns; I usually keep my voting preferences to myself. (That´s the point of secret ballots, right?) But the November 2012 elections got me charged up to the point where I felt the urge to do something public, and since my friends already knew how I felt, I didn´t think I would be divulging any secrets by doing so.

A pair of potentially catastrophic cases will be argued before the Supreme Court on Tuesday. These cases are brought by privately held, for-profit corporations that are arguing their religious convictions should preclude them from offering employees the health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers don’t want to allow their employees’ insurance to cover some forms of birth control because, contrary to medicaland scientific evidence, they believe some birth control causes abortions. Corporations are not people. Corporations cannot have religious views. If religious rights are extended to corporations, it puts us on a slippery slope where any private company

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney said Sunday that President Barack Obama is naive when it comes to Russia, has shown "faulty judgment" about Moscow´s intentions and could have done more to try to deter its annexation of Crimea. The 2012 Republican presidential nominee said Obama didn´t have the foresight to anticipate Russia´s moves and should have been working earlier with allies to make clear the penalties that Russia would face if it moved into Ukraine. Romney did acknowledge that such steps may not have been enough though to hold back Russia President Vladimir Putin. "Had we communicated those things, there´s always

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the sweeping acceptance of gay marriage in recent years is owed in large part to Christianity. Rejecting the rigidly hierarchical and stratified societies of the ancient world, Jesus Christ taught the equal dignity of all persons, proclaimed that the meek shall inherit the earth, and declared that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The Western world has been working out the logic of these subversive teachings ever since, with the institutional transformation of marriage being the latest, though surely not the last, example of its social, moral,
