Venezuelans vote for president
after fierce campaign

Voters in Venezuela are going to the polls in what is predicted to be the country's most tightly contested presidential election in a decade. Left-wing incumbent Hugo Chavez, first elected in 1998, is being challenged by opposition leader Henrique Capriles. Mr Chavez wants to continue what he calls his socialist revolution while Mr Capriles has promised to restore economic growth. Almost 19 million Venezuelans are eligible to vote in the election. Mr Chavez - who is seeking a fourth term in office - was diagnosed with cancer last year but says he has now fully recovered. A colourful and often controversial

Will they finally throw that thug out before he takes over every single thing in the country?

Merrill Lynch´s Quiet Dissolution
Another Casualty From The Pickers

Financial Fascism: Bank of America, which was coerced into buying Merrill Lynch during the 2008 financial crisis, is now quietly dissolving the storied 99-year-old investment bank. This is destruction, and not the creative kind. As if the U.S. government´s $700 billion Troubled Assets Relief Program weren´t bad enough just as a bailout, there´s the specter and now fallout of government meddling on a scale that can only be compared to Mussolini´s corporate state. In the panic of the 2008 financial crisis, solvent BofA was ordered by government regulators to purchase Merrill Lynch, a bank it didn´t want, for $18.5 billion. After that, it

It’s not often that Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) are on the same page when it comes to foreign policy. But the crisis in Egypt has aligned them on at least one issue. Both favor suspending foreign aid to the most populous Arab country. Here’s a key part of McCain’s joint statement with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.): “It is neither in our long-term national interest nor consistent with our values and laws to continue providing assistance at this time to Egypt’s interim government and military. We urge the Obama Administration to suspend U.S. assistance to Egypt and

Vancouver, British Columbia -- Michael Hallatt has spent more than $350,000 at Trader Joe´s in less than two years. But the popular grocery chain doesn´t ever want to see him again. "I´m their best customer," he said with a mix of pride and indignation. Every week, the former Bay Area resident drives his panel van across the border to buy a few thousand dollars worth of merchandise at Trader Joe´s stores in the States. He then turns around and resells the goods at his own shop in Canada for a profit. Now, despite the obvious affection Hallatt and his customers

WASHINGTON – The U.S. government announced Thursday that it has suspended the deportation of 552,918 undocumented young people since the Deferred Action program went into effect a year ago. The government has received a total of 573,404 requests under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an immigration program implemented by the Obama administration on Aug. 15, 2012, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The program suspends for two years the deportation of qualified undocumented youths and young adults who entered the United States as minors.

Congress: Unable to gain traction for his immigration bill, Sen. Marco Rubio is warning his fellow Republicans to pass it now because President Obama will otherwise enact amnesty without them. Is this any way to legislate? Rubio, who has been so impressive in the past, is beginning to disappoint with his desperate effort to enact the Gang of Eight´s immigration reform bill, which is expected to legalize millions of lawbreakers who disregarded U.S. immigration law in exchange for some hastily cobbled together border security programs. A Washington state bride-to-be whose wedding dress was stolen the day of the ceremony found a fairy godmother of sorts in an unlikely way: by calling 911. The News Tribune of Tacoma reports the bride-to-be called after her wedding dress was stolen out of her car near her home. The 911 operator who answered the call tells the paper that she took down the woman’s information as usual, but was touched by her story. “I finally figured out what was going on, and asked when the ceremony was scheduled,” Candice, who only wanted to give her first name, told The News Tribune. “When

Panama is insisting that the case of a North Korean ship carrying contraband Cuban weapons must be handled by the United Nations despite a soothing diplomatic note from Pyongyang, according a Panamanian government official. The verbal note from Pyongyang’s embassy in Havana noted that the ship did not seek to endanger the security of the Panama Canal and that North Korea hopes for “amiable cooperation” to resolve the case “diplomatically,” the official said. North Korea also asked in the note Friday that two of its diplomats be allowed into Panama to provide consular services to the 35 crewmen

Is there such thing as “class” in America? Not if you ask Rick Santorum. The once and possibly future GOP presidential candidate spoke to a Republican gathering in Lyon County, Iowa late last week and shared this piece of advice with his party: “Don’t use the term the other side uses.” That includes the “middle class.” Santorum proceeded to tear into President Obama for constantly invoking the term “middle class” in his speeches about the economy. “Since when in America do we have classes?” Santorum asked. “Since when in America are people stuck in areas

Labor activists using tactics adopted from the Occupy Wall Street movement are crashing restaurants across the nation in an effort to raise wages for workers – and they’re getting taxpayer money to fund the effort. Using a combination of federal grants and grants from left-leaning organizations, the Restaurant Opportunity Center, or ROC, is technically a charitable nonprofit and not a union. But their pro-worker messages, anti-employer protests and self-proclaimed goal of organizing service sector employees for the purposes of negotiating higher wages make ROC look and sound much like a labor union.

"Ayeee I knocked out 5 woods since Zimmerman court!" young James Edwards tweeted on July 15 in the wake of George Zimmerman´s acquittal for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Edwards´s tweets surfaced after he and two of his homies were charged with killing Australian baseball player Chris Lane in Duncan, Oklahoma, last Friday. For the record, "woods" is short for peckerwoods, a derogatory term for white people. If Edwards, who is black, knocked out five woods as claimed, he would hardly be unique. As Colin Flaherty chillingly documents in his frequently updated book, White Girl Bleed A Lot, the "knock-out

Conservative media´s total fixation on black-on-black and black-on-white crime isn´t going to end. Here´s why. There are a few black people up to no good in this country and Fox News is on it! So is Drudge Report. Vigilantly on the lookout, 24 hours a day, for stories about black youths behaving badly. A commercial photography business owned by opponents of same-sex marriage violated New Mexico´s anti-discrimination law by refusing to take pictures of a gay couple´s commitment ceremony, the state´s highest court ruled unanimously Thursday. Elaine Huguenin, who owns Elane Photography with her husband and is the business´s principal photographer, refused to photograph the ceremony because it violated her religious beliefs. The court held that "a commercial photography business that offers its services to the public, thereby increasing its visibility to potential clients" is bound by the New Mexico Human Rights Act "and must serve same-sex couples on the same basis that

Slowly at first, then all of a sudden, the Obama administration has devolved into the Obama regime. Obama does whatever he wants. Those pesky impediments on his predecessors — namely, federal law, the separation of powers, and the Constitution — have proved as tough as tissue paper in containing Obama’s ambition to impose statism on America. From Obamacare to unions to telephones, it’s basically another day, another decree. “I have to figure out what I can do outside of Congress through executive actions,” Obama reportedly told the Congressional Black Caucus last month. When the House of Representatives returns from August recess on Sept. 9, Boehner will have just 21 days (only nine of them working days) to find a way to pass a fiscal year 2014 government funding resolution. Shortly after that, Boehner will also have to raise the Treasury Department’s borrowing limit, and the wealthy Republican donor class are also pressuring Boehner to pass immigration reform that grants amnesty to current illegal immigrants and expands guest worker programs to create new ones.
