I'm currently having the (small) pool in my back yard in San Diego renovated, and the excellent contractor, who has been licensed to build new pools for 30+ years, now has to settle for small remodel jobs like mine because almost no one is building new swimming pools in this economy. He's really struggling to keep his business going. Suppliers won't extend credit since so many other pool builders have gone bankrupt, and he's really getting squeezed. Any guess whom he'll be voting for in November?
Enough of this "downsizing" BS. We Americans have BIG dreams.

The highly efficient, neatly-dressed, good-natured guy who cleans and regulates the large pool at the therapy place every morning is the son of the company owner. It's a Blue Haven franchise too. His story is very similar; he's not even a salesman, just another "pool boy," but his self-respect is intact.
Terribly sad. I only hope the Boeing engineers, unused to southern climes, will order pools and keep the family going until the economy improves.

One of my brothers is a sales manager at the executive level. Good salesmen are a breed apart. They always see the glass as half full - it just comes to them naturally. I can still remember an amusing incident from early in his career when he was working in retail sales. It was getting close to Christmas & a TV reporter was in the store asking him - what were the best selling gift items that season? Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a pesky, slow-moving item that almost nobody was buying. Thinking fast, he picked it up & said, "Well, this item is so popular that we can't even keep it in stock!" He was all sold out of it the next day.

When I went into sales I asked two successful sales people for advice. One said don't take the "no's" personally and the other said you have to sell yourself before selling the product. Great advice and I had a 18 year run in sales and eventually started my own company. There is no better life education than being a salesman.

The truth in any economy is still, "nothing happens until something is sold", our salesmen are still the best because it will take more than Obama to overcome our will to win and the American mindset. This administration will soon be in our rearview mirror.

It is too early to say much about today’s terrorist attack on the Boston Marathon, but one thing struck me when I watched this video, which Steve posted earlier today, as well as other videos and photos of the aftermath of the explosions: The response to the bombs by the crowd at the finish line was, I think, exemplary. Sure, many people fled from the explosions, and reasonably so. But a remarkable number ran, as they say, to the sound of the guns, even though when two bombs go off, one might well expect more. It was too good to last. For the last few weeks, the Obama administration has been showing more fortitude in confronting a belligerent North Korea than either the Bush or Clinton administrations had done. But last week, as I previously noted, there was a worrisome leak in the New York Times which quoted administration officials as saying that any response to a North Korean attack would be strictly proportional—which can only encourage Kim Jong-un to act, safe in the knowledge that the U.S. and South Korea will not “over-react” and bring down his criminal regime in response.

Since he first became a presidential candidate, President Obama must have spent millions of dollars in legal expenses to combat dozens of so-called "birther" challenges seeking the original documents pertaining to his birth. As president, he famously issued an electronic document on the White House website in 2011; the document purported to be his long-form birth certificate, though it is apparently a forgery. In light of the explosions that have rocked Boston on Patriots’ Day, during the city’s annual marathon, NBC reporter Luke Russert took to Twitter to speculate that today’s horrific events could possibly be related to the 1993 government siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas — an incident often attached to conversations about “right-wing terrorism” and anti-government violence. “I was at Fenway Park w my dad and @mikebarnicle during Waco which was on Patriots Day in 1993. Yet until late last week, much of the national media was silent as testimony about Gosnell’s alleged “house of horrors” abortion clinic rolled out. Much of the media attention outside Philadelphia, in fact, centered on how little media attention the story was receiving outside Philadelphia.
