The Navy's Newest Guided Missile Destroyer Is A Deadly Beauty

| The U.S. Navy's newest destroyer class warship, the 510-foot USS Michael Murphy, recently laid anchor at New York City's Pier 88 for its commissioning ceremony. On Saturday, the ship will participate in a long standing naval tradition, the commissioning ceremony, which marks the moment a new ship is formally placed in active service. (Snip) The new ship consists of a crew of 290 well-trained Navy service-men and -women led by Commander Thomas E. Shultz. The ship is named after Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy, who risked and lost his own life in 2005 in an effort to call for aid
|
Comments: Now THIS is how you name a ship: after a fallen SEAL who died serving his comrades and his country. Not after some leftist Congresswoman who got shot by some psycho, or some leftist union organizer. Lots of pictures including the hallway commemorating Lt. Michael Murphy. So what do they have on Gabby Gifford's ''ship,'' old campaign posters?

Navy seems to have changed quite a bit since I was in. We used to just "tie up" to piers.

This is a large, modern, highly-capable ship. Far, far larger than a WWII destroyer, it's more the size of a WWII light cruiser, but with more firepower reaching over a far greater range. The vertical launch cells can be loaded with a variety of versions of the Standard Missile [[that's its name], some of which can take out orbiting satellites.
She's sitting at about her normal maximum draft, suggesting the "barge" [a fuel-carrying "lighter"] has topped her off. The lighter sits high. The one pennant on display [yellow and blue] indicates "I wish to communicate with you."
FTA: an effort to call for aid for his men and himself after being ambushed by over 50 anti-coalition militia fighters in Afghanistan.
What, can't spell "Islamic terrorists"? Or "unlawful combatants"?
FTA: While ships are usually named for cities or states...
Don't know the subject? Three choices: a. find someone who does; b. research it carefully; or c. shut up. "Naming conventions" [the proper term, BTW] follow ship's class. US Navy ships are not randomly named for cities, states, battles, or individuals.
FTA: ... or famous and notable Americans, this ship was named after Murphy because of the bravery and commitment to others he displayed in the 2005 mission.
So you're saying LT Murphy isn't "notable"? Really?

Find the best photos at http://www.navy.mil/view_photos_top.asp
There are several pages of photos from the ceremony already up.
Go here for a fine photo of her sailing past the Statue of Liberty, flying a very large US flag. http://tinyurl.com/9xumfeb
That photo shows quite a bit of oil-canning of her hull plates, and the much-greater masking of her stacks against infrared detection compared to early Arleigh Burkes.
#3 is correct. That feature also appears in the above-referenced photo. Modern ship designs incorporate many features to reduce detectability, as I also note above.
#4: There's a second "BI" involved, actually BIW, the builder, Bath Iron Works, in Bath, Maine. Only Northrop-Grumman in Norfolk builds our nuclear-powered carriers.

I proudly served on 3 of the flight 1 versions of these mighty warships. one during a time of war. This is how you name a United States Ship. You don't name it after some putz politician or a dipstick liberal activist. You name it after one of America's finest. Some of the comments after the article are pathetic but that's what you get when birdbrained liberals and people who have NO IDEA what it takes to serve in the Navy or in any branch of the armed forces. There was no mention of the LtMM's sponsor. I hope that honor went to Mrs. Murphy.
For those who do not know the "sponsor" of a ship is usually the woman who gets to smash the champagne bottle on the vessel's prow at its christening--which happens at its launching which would have occurred before the commissioning. If it was Lt. Murphy's mom it would have been a nice touch to make mention in the article.
Great pics of a fine vessel.
BTW, are the legends re: right rudder and left rudder embossed on the wheel to aid any female who might be the helmsperson. ;-)
Also, it looks like the Chief QM has a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf clusters = 2 combat injuries.

#10: These hulls are designed to maintain speed [that is, not have to slow greatly] even in rougher sea-states. The hull shape of the Arleigh Burkes and the Ticonderogas are quite similar.
#11: Congratulations, thanks for your service, and for the post. For those not familiar, all ships of the class can operate helicopters. Flight Is don't have hangers. Flight IIs and IIAs do. The difference is apparent.
#12: Agreed. Yes, Michael's mother, Maureen, is the sponsor, and was at the commissioning. Good photos at Navy.mil, a great, great website, great resource, all images released for use.

I was blessed with seeing the USS Sullivans and her crew. I wanted to cry!! I've known of the Sullivans' and their sacrifice since I was a child, have seen the movie "The Fighting Sullivans" (if I recall the name correctly) several times. It's some years since I saw it last.
I concur with others here on naming our members of our fleet according to those who have shown honor and bravery in combat.

Thanks for the memories. I had the great honor of being a plankowner (at 17 yrs old, the youngest)of the USS Lynde McCormick DDG-8, 51 years ago. Named after another Navy Hero and former Chief Of Naval Operations.
I can appreciate how honored this commissioning feels upon this great occasion and how humbled I feel to have been in the fore of this great class of beautiful ships, the Guided Missle Deystroyer (DDG).

We at Townhall have been covering this hotly contested Senate race for months and the results are finally in: With 36 percent of precincts reporting, Elizabeth Warren has been declared the next junior Senator from Massachusetts. Warren has never held public office before and the eye-popping $40 million she raised this election cycle evidently proved more than enough to unseat incumbent Senator Scott Brown. This was the most expensive Senate race of 2012 -- by a long shot.

CNN’s Peter Hamby reported that Mitt Romney‘s internal polling showed President Obama leading in Ohio by five percentage points.Per Hamby’s post: The number represented a sharp final bump for Obama in Ohio, a race that had essentially been a tied race through much of the previous week, according to the campaign’s daily tracking. The polling, which also showed a tight race in Pennsylvania, explains why Romney officials decided to send their candidate on last-minute Election Day visits to Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

The Obama and Romney campaigns may be gearing up for a very late night, with one Obama campaign adviser predicting that in Florida alone, "they'll be counting until 2 a.m." The Obama adviser said signs suggest the race is quite tight, though the campaign claimed to be "holding strong" in key battlegrounds like Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The adviser also said turnout among black voters in Virginia was better than expected, suggesting that could be a problem for Mitt Romney. Republican operatives in Virginia, though, predicted a razor-thin victory for their candidate in the state.

Washington - Early returns on Tuesday in what is anticipated to be a dead even presidential election contained no surprises, as CNN projected President Barack Obama will win his home state of Illinois and eight other races while Republican challenger Mitt Romney will win nine states. All races called so far went as expected after the roller-coaster ride of an election campaign that was buffeted by a superstorm and missteps on both sides. Obama and Romney ran dead even in final polls that hinted at a result rivaling some of the closest presidential elections in history, reflecting the deep political

A week after Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast, a majority of voters said President Barack Obama’s response to the crisis wasn’t a factor in their vote, according to early exit polls. Fifty-five percent of those surveyed, per CBS News’ early exit polling released by radio station WKZO in Kalamazoo, Mich., said Obama’s handling of the storm was a minor factor in their vote or wasn’t a factor at all. Twenty-six percent named Sandy as an “important” factor, and 15 percent said it was the “most important” factor in their decision.

Mitt Romney is leading among independents in both Ohio and Virginia, early exit polls show. In Ohio, the former Massachusetts governor takes 56 percent of self-identified independents, compared with 40 percent for President Barack Obama. That’s a huge decrease for Obama from 2008, when the exit polls found him winning independents in Ohio by 12 points, 52 percent to 44 percent for John McCain. The numbers are similar but slightly tighter in Virginia: Romney takes 53 percent of independents there, according to ABC News exit polls, a 12-point lead over Obama. In 2008, Obama won independents in the state by

As expected, the presidential race is tight in Ohio, where the polls just closed: President Obama is winning women 55 percent to 44 percent in the early CBS News exit poll, while Mitt Romney is leading 52 percent to 46 percent among men. Women made up 51 percent of the electorate, compared to 49 percent among women. Thirty-nine percent of voters so far identified themselves as Democrats, compared to 30 percent calling themselves Republican. Thirty-one percent identified as independent or something else, and Romney has a big edge among this group - 56 percent to 40 percent for Mr. Obama.

As expected, Republican candidate for President, Mitt Romney, won West Virginia’s five electoral votes in Tuesday’s General Election over President Barack Obama. National media outlets called the race in West Virginia shortly after polls closed at 7:30 p.m. President Obama’s fate in West Virginia has never been in question, as he garnered just 60 percent of the democratic vote in the May primary. The other 40 percent of that vote went to Texas federal inmate Keith Judd, who was placed on the ballot in West Virginia. President Obama has been hugely unpopular in the Mountain State since he first ran

Early exit polls show Election Day voters are slightly more Republican than in 2008 and broadly concerned about the state of the U.S. economy. Six in 10 voters said the economy is their top issue according to the poll, which was released by The Associated Press and conducted on behalf of a consortium of media companies. Less than a quarter of voters said their families were better off than four years ago — a point seized on by many Republicans as the results leaked out.

THE graying man flashing fury in the Rose Garden on behalf of the Newtown families, the grieving man wiping away tears after speaking at the Boston memorial service, is not the same man who glided into office four years ago. President Obama has watched the blood-dimmed tide drowning the ceremony of innocence, as Yeats wrote, and he has learned how to emotionally connect with Americans in searing moments, as he did from the White House late Friday night after the second bombing suspect was apprehended in Boston.

In debate classes or law school, it is often referred to as the ‘arguing against the non-existing opponent’ tactic. The way it works is you imply your opponent is making an outlandish, unsavory claim (though he isn’t), hoping others will run with it or, at worst, that your opponent won’t sufficiently correct it and the claim sticks. To illustrate, imagine Sally is arguing in favor of marijuana’s legalization against Tom. In the middle of the debate, Tom suddenly shrieks: “Well, Sally, you can talk about legalizing marijuana all you want but I just don’t believe

The two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings were not licensed to have the firearms they used in several shootouts with police on Friday, Reuters reported Sunday night. The news that the suspects were not authorized to own firearms will likely add fuel to calls for tougher gun laws – an issue that was put on the back-burner last week after the Senate blocked the central elements of a gun-control package backed by President Obama. Because Massachusetts state law bars handgun ownership for those younger than 21, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, age 26, was the only brother who could have

President Obama´s sequester scare strategy has been a political flop, but his government keeps trying. The latest gambit is to force airline flight delays until enough travellers stuck on tarmacs browbeat enough Republicans to raise taxes again. This week the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began furloughing each of its air-traffic controllers for one day out of every 10 to achieve roughly $600 million in savings this fiscal year. The White House dubiously claims that the furloughs are required by the sequester spending cuts enacted in 2011.

Lots of “tough questions” are being asked about why the FBI--having interviewed the older Boston bomber, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, in 2011--failed to continue to keep tabs on him. But that is the wrong question to be asking. The much more pressing question is: why the FBI didn’t nab the bombers on Monday night? After all, they hadn’t skipped town, and one of them--Tamerlan--was sitting "on file" as someone whom the Russian government said they suspected was an Islamist terrorist. A man they repeatedly interviewed just two years ago. Why did no one check those files, within minutes of the

Following the attack in Boston, some politicians, including Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Dan Coats (R-IN), advised slowing down immigration reform legislation in order to allow further debate and not make rushed decisions based on emotions. In an interview with Bloomberg’s Trish Regan, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) criticized his colleagues, deeming the argument “ludicrous.” Grassley’s remarks on Friday immediately caught attention when he said, “Given the events of this week, it’s important for us to understand the gaps and loopholes in our immigration system.” “How can individuals evade authorities and plan such attacks on our soil?” he asked.
