Winter power cuts feared as Britain runs out of energy

| Britain faces power cuts by the winter of 2015 as ageing power plants are shut down, a shocking report warned yesterday. Energy regulator Ofgem also said consumers face massive rises in electricity bills as generators are forced to rely on expensive gas to fuel power stations. The battle to keep the lights on is also being compromised by EU anti-pollution laws which are forcing the early shutdown of coal-fired power stations. At the same time Britain’s nuclear plants are also closing. The shutdowns will lead to a 30 per cent cut in the UK’s electricity generating capacity.

Comments: Notice that we are treading a very similar path but nobody is yet telling us what percentage we'll be short by 2015. If Obama stays in power, that is, or if we can't outnumber the Democrats in both the House and Senate.
ABO, for our own sakes!

Just like the U.S……sitting on vast supplies of energy and allowing their whole economy to be shut down by idiots.
Where is the courage to stand up and say 'the h*ll with you people and your policies! We aren't going to destroy our nation for absolutely no reason! We are going to run our power plants on our own coal…we'll operate our nuclear plants as we see fit. This country will put it's citizens well-being at the forefront!'

204 coal-fired plants shut down by Zippy and Lisa Jackson (so far). Do not think for a minute that a president Romney is going to flip the switch back on Nov 7th.It will take years to overhaul or replace these. Those who would vote for Obama should pray for sunny , windy and nightless days .

We need to remember this when the EPA shuts down 30% or more of the power here. Deaths and misery will almost certainly be blamed on the "evil capitalist" energy producers, but this is the real cause.

Britain’s top U.S.-based diplomat capped off his first visit to Charleston on Monday by calling for stronger trade and tourism ties between his nation and United States. Charleston is well-positioned to capitalize in both instances, said Ambassador Sir Peter Westmacott. As a major East Coast port city, Charleston could become “a major hub for this connection into the U.K.,” he said at a World Trade Center Charleston luncheon at the Harbour Club. “You are one of the most important port cities in the United States,” he said. Also, Westmacott urged local travel officials to direct more marketing at British tourists.

Leicester University voiced concern after photographs emerged showing hand-written signs directing male and female students to sit in separate sections at a public talk on the existence of God organised by the university’s Islamic Society. The meeting was addressed by Hamza Tzortzis, an Islamic speaker who tours university campuses, who was at the centre of controversy over segregation at University College London (UCL) last month. UCL announced that it was banning his organisation, the Islamic Education & Research Academy (IERA), from its campus after a debate he was addressing descended into farce over the issue of segregation.

WASHINGTON—The Supreme Court left in doubt Monday whether gun owners have a 2nd Amendment right to carry a firearm in public. Without a comment or dissent, the justices turned down a gun-rights challenge to a New York law that strictly limits who can legally carry a weapon when they are on the streets. To obtain a "concealed carry" permit, New Yorkers must convince a county official that they have a "special need for protection" that goes beyond living or working in a high-crime area. Only about one-tenth of 1% of New Yorkers have concealed-carry permits, compared to more than 6%

In deference to Lady Thatcher’s immense popularity across the Pond, the US House of Representatives paid tribute to her. But the US Senate has been oddly reluctant to follow suit. Sources in Washington tell Mr Steerpike that a Republican resolution is ‘on hold’ because Democrat majority leader Harry Reid, with the help of a Senator Schumer, is blocking the move. [Snip] US senators were slow to authorise President Reagan’s attack on the late and unlamented ‘Mad Dog’ of the Middle East. But the Gipper wasn’t worried because the Iron Lady allowed the assault to be launched from these shores.

Three times as much opium was produced in Helmand last year as when British troops went there in 2006, and a new UN forecast says that this year´s crop will be even higher. Opium is the raw material for heroin, and most of the illegal drugs for sale on the UK´s streets come from Afghanistan. Like many other farmers in Helmand province, Hamidullah planted cotton last year, encouraged by British and American agricultural advisers. But there was no market for it, and he planted opium poppies again this year. "The price of cotton is very low," he said. "It does

The UK´s "irrational" use of biofuels will cost motorists around £460 million over the next 12 months, a think tank says. A report by Chatham House says the growing reliance on sustainable liquid fuels will also increase food prices. The author says that biodiesel made from vegetable oil was worse for the climate than fossil fuels. Under EU law, biofuels are set to make up 5% of the UK´s transport fuel from today. Since 2008, the UK has required fuel suppliers to add a growing proportion of sustainable materials into the petrol and diesel they supply. These biofuels are mainly

Whitehall sources have revealed that the U.S. delegation at tomorrow’s service in St Paul’s Cathedral will be led by two Reagan era secretaries of state: James Baker and George Shultz. Though President Obama himself had not been expected to attend, there had been speculation that he would be represented either by Vice President Joe Biden or wife Michelle. Since he first became a presidential candidate, President Obama must have spent millions of dollars in legal expenses to combat dozens of so-called "birther" challenges seeking the original documents pertaining to his birth. As president, he famously issued an electronic document on the White House website in 2011; the document purported to be his long-form birth certificate, though it is apparently a forgery. In addition, he has taken great pains to hide the paper trail of passport records, college transcripts, and other data -- all of which a prospective employer might require of a job applicant.

In light of the explosions that have rocked Boston on Patriots’ Day, during the city’s annual marathon, NBC reporter Luke Russert took to Twitter to speculate that today’s horrific events could possibly be related to the 1993 government siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas — an incident often attached to conversations about “right-wing terrorism” and anti-government violence. “I was at Fenway Park w my dad and @mikebarnicle during Waco which was on Patriots Day in 1993. Speculating on possible link,” Russert tweeted following the explosions.

MSNBC contributor Joy-Ann Reid told the host of Now, Alex Wagner, that she thought President Barack Obama’s response to the attack on the Boston Marathon on Monday was powerful and comforting in a way that President George W. Bush’s response to the attacks of September 11, 2001, was not. She accused Bush of being unavailable to the American people for the “first couple weeks” after the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Reid told Wagner that the president’s statement actively combatted the intention of the terrorists, which is to make their targets feel “discombobulated.” “Having, sort of

"I think we’ve got a good chance of seeing it pass if members of Congress are listening to the American people," President Obama said in an interview on NBC´s "Today Show" that aired on Tuesday. "The notion that Congress would defy the overwhelming instinct of the American people after what we saw happen in Newtown, I think, is unimaginable." Obama was then asked by Savannah Guthrie how he could expect Democrats in red states to vote on this bill when he, as a Senator, didn´t have to himself.
