Be wary of playing
Turkey’s great game

Telegraph [UK], by Con Coughlin

Original Article

Posted By:Attercliffe, 10/5/2012 7:48:20 AM

The state is taking a lead role in unseating Syria’s Assad, but it has a hidden agenda. Syria might be getting all the blame for firing the first shot in the sudden eruption of hostilities on the Turko-Syrian border, but Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish prime minister, can hardly claim to be an innocent party when it comes to stoking the fires of a conflict that retains the potential to ignite a regional conflagration. For more than a year now Turkey has been taking a lead role in the campaign to overthrow the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Read this with interest.
As Obama slinks away, Turkey is flexing her muscles around the Middle East.
Turkey is democratic, has an Islamic party running her government and is looking away from Europe that has made her unwelcome.

The democracy part could possibly be good for Syria.

Malaysia Airlines: The lost final hours

The mystery over the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370 has deepened after satellite data emerged to suggest the plane flew on for hours after it was reported missing. The search operation is now concentrating on huge areas to the north and south of Malaysia, after locational ´pings´ detected by a satellite appeared to indicate the plane was somewhere on an arc stretching either north up to to Central Asia, or south, to the Indian Ocean and Australia. Evidence revealed on Saturday 15 March by the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak suggested the jet was deliberately diverted by someone on

Al-Qaeda has published a list of car-bomb targets for its followers in Britain, including FA cup matches and the Savoy hotel. The twelfth issue of Inspire, published by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, urges supporters to maximise casualties by targeting people--rather than buildings--in heavily populated areas. It offers instructions on how to build a car bomb using materials that will not arouse suspicion and frequently cites the example of Faisal Shahzad, the failed Times Square bomber. But its most chilling passages are reserved for a country-by-country list of targets. In the UK, it suggests events with live TV coverage, including

Some of the world’s most militarised regimes might be covering up embarrassing details about the flightpath of the missing Malaysia Airlines jet, a leading aviation expert has suggested. David Learmount, operations and safety editor at the respected Flight Global publication, said countries in the world’s most volatile region might be withholding vital radar data about Flight MH370 for fear it would expose holes in their multibillion pound air defences. [Snip] Mr Learmount said: “Maybe these states’ air defences, like Malaysia’s, are not what they are cracked up to be. And maybe they wouldn’t want the rest of the world to

Claims today that the missing Malaysian Airlines jet dropped to an altitude of 5,000ft to avoid radar lends credibility to reports by villagers that they saw bright lights and loud noises at about the time the aircraft is thought to have made a ´U-turn´. Investigators told a Malaysian newspaper that the Boeing 777 had dropped to a lower altitude to avoid ground radar, using the surrounding terrain as a sonar barrier. This type of flying is considered to be dangerous and risky, because it places tremendous pressure on the frame of the aircraft--and flying low at night without radar assistance

Zaharie had joined an online flight simulator community called X-Sim and after making his simulator, in November 2012 he posted a message about its ´awesome view´ inviting ´buddies´ to get in touch so they could take the simulator ´to the next level of simulation. It has also revived questions about why the Malaysian military did not immediately notice what was happening, and what gaps there might be more generally in military air defences in a region where the defence and security temperature is high at the moment. It has now emerged that Malaysian primary military radar tracked an unidentified contact that flew right across the country´s air space, now confirmed to be MH370. But no action, it seems, was taken. President Obama on Monday slapped Russia with the kinds of economic sanctions not seen since the Cold War, but the administration’s supposed hard line was met with mockery and a “collective shrug” in Moscow, Kiev and Washington. One day after Crimeans voted overwhelmingly to secede from Ukraine and join Russia, the White House and its partners in the European Union responded by targeting high-ranking officials in Moscow along with pro-Russian figures responsible for the unrest in Ukraine. The move adds even more tension to a dramatic standoff between Russia and the West, but early signs suggest the latest round of

Hillary Clinton may well be the most "known" politician in the world. She and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have been on the national stage for more than two decades -- traveling from Arkansas to the White House to the Senate to the 2008 campaign trail and finally to the State Department. During that time, every look and utterance from Hillary has been examined, then examined again, then analyzed, then overanalyzed. That´s why this series of photos -- shot by LIFE magazine in 1969 as part of a feature on outstanding college students -- is so fascinating. It captures
