Presidential debates: round one to Romney

| I would call the first presidential debate a pretty clear win for Mitt Romney. Not that it was walk-over: both men were competent and eminently rational. There was no silly behaviour (in the Al Gore tradition) and there were no gaffes on either side. But it was Romney who was stunningly on top of his argument with a faultless command of detail and a confident fluency that made Barack Obama seem hesitant, defensive and occasionally evasive. What will be most significant for the mass audience was that Romney repudiated so completely the images of him which the media has

Boom! That's the sound of the clowns in the press as their jams hit the collective ground. This was a smack down, plain and simple. Maybe Obama can just concede now? I hope not, I wanna see round two of the whoopin!

I saw tweets on FaceBook from both Bill Maher and Michael Moore saying that Obama lost. I am not making this up! I heard Sharpton said the same thing.

#3, according to the Telegraph's live blogs, the tweets were strongly for Romney.
Latest post from that site: The snap post-debate poll from CNN/ORC is decisive and will make for very unhappy reading in Chicago. Voters felt Romney won by a margin of almost 3-1.
I think I'd better do a new thread--some good stuff has been posted at the T blog since I last looked.

Rob Portman has done a superb job of preparing Mitt Romney for this first debate.
Obama didn’t appear as well prepared and was out classed big time. Maybe BO needs to retire to Chi-Town and shoot hoops for a living. Hopefully, this December will be the last Hawaiian vacation Moochel gets to take on our dime.

On Thursday morning TV and on the news Obama will be proclaimed the winner. And by the weekend his triumph will be total.
Chris Matthews and Juan Williams should be entertaining tomorrow.
But spin can only do so much. Some people will believe their own eyes and ears.

#5, I've said a couple of times that I think Obama doesn't want to be re-elected but has been forced into this by Michelle, his supporters, financiers, etc. I thought he might use the debates to "lose" and that seems to be what's he's doing. He already prepared the way by saying several times that Romney is better than he at debate.
If he loses because he's "tired" (by the heavy burdens of office), then he can still have a good career, like Tony Blair and Clinton, making millions on the speaking circuit. And, like Hillary did to Bill, he'll be forced to go out on that circuit by Michelle. Well, I suppose, as long as there are good golf courses near the speech venues, he'll be happy.

Lots of “tough questions” are being asked about why the FBI--having interviewed the older Boston bomber, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, in 2011--failed to continue to keep tabs on him. But that is the wrong question to be asking. The much more pressing question is: why the FBI didn’t nab the bombers on Monday night? After all, they hadn’t skipped town, and one of them--Tamerlan--was sitting "on file" as someone whom the Russian government said they suspected was an Islamist terrorist. A man they repeatedly interviewed just two years ago. Why did no one check those files, within minutes of the

The brothers suspected of bombing the Boston Marathon were probably planning further attacks, the city´s police commissioner has said. Ed Davis told CBS News that Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev had been carrying homemade bombs and grenades which they threw at police when cornered. [Snip] Speaking to CBS´s Face the Nation, Mr Davis said: "We have reason to believe, based upon the evidence that was found at that scene--the explosions, the explosive ordinance that was unexploded and the firepower that they had--that they were going to attack other individuals. That´s my personal belief at this time." He said more than 250

Michael McCaul, chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, told CNN: "He was interviewed by the FBI in 2011 and let go. He travelled back to Russia and spent six months there." Stating that the FBI had questions to answer, the Republican said: "Clearly something happened in that six-month timeframe. He radicalised at some point." Tsarnaev’s application for US citizenship was reportedly rejected after US officials carried out a background check that showed he had been interviewed in 2011 by the FBI. An official told the New York Times that the Department of Homeland Security halted--at least temporarily--the application

Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev took a close interest in a radical British group that made a film about the potential of exploding a nuclear bomb at the London Olympics. Checks on the dead 26-year-old’s computer show he regularly watched a propaganda film on YouTube called the Black Flags of Khorasan, the old name for Afghanistan. It was produced by a London-based group called the Real Undercover Enemies Exposed. The group says: “The video contains information relating to the possibility of a nuclear or dirty bomb at the London Olympics and a chemical/biological attack on the London

Like kittens and libraries, marathons are intrinsically benevolent. They raise funds for charities, provide a day out for families, and present athletes a demanding challenge. Beyond the frontrunners, the race isn’t even especially competitive, since most amateurs are attempting to beat only their own personal bests. Thus the double pressure-cooker bombing of the Boston marathon on Monday was perfectly designed to garner no sympathy whatsoever. It was contrived to be as appalling as possible in order to draw just the scale of outraged international coverage that the carnage has duly received. Of every stripe, terrorists eat denunciation for breakfast.

The three Cuban national soccer team players scrambled down the back stairs of their Toronto hotel. Odisnel Cooper, Maikel Chang and Heviel Cordoves took the stairs two at a time. The future Charleston Battery players were in the midst of defecting from their homeland, and were just steps away from freedom. As the trio got to the final flight of stairs, Cordoves froze. It was a brisk October afternoon, with temperatures hovering just below 40 degrees. For Cordoves, a native of Havana, it was absolutely frigid. Wearing only the light warm-up suit the Cuban team had supplied, Cordoves wanted to

Federal officials have accepted Boeing’s revamped battery system for its beleaguered 787 Dreamliners and intend to lift a 3-month-old order grounding the planes. The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement Friday that next week it will send airlines instructions and publish a notice lifting the grounding order. The lifting of the grounding order will be effective the day the notice is published. Lifting the grounding order gives Boeing the go-ahead to begin retrofitting planes with an enhanced lithium ion battery system. The root cause of battery failures that led to a fire on one of the planes and

Federal law enforcement officials are actively investigating the possibility that the Boston bombers were known to the government’s terror-trackers, MailOnline understands. Any inquiry into the marathon bombing will look into whether agents could have taken action – but didn’t – to prevent the Tsarnaev brothers from obtaining the explosives that killed 3 and wounded 173 others. CBS News reported Friday evening that two years ago, the FBI interviewed the elder brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who was killed in Thursday night´s dramatic shootout. The feds reportedly spoke to him at the request of an unspecified foreign government, but couldn´t

So once again, no good deed goes unpunished. Uncle Sam lets another bunch of leeching future terrorists into the country who have absolutely no business being here, gives them “asylum,” making them immediately eligible for welfare, and this is the thanks we get? They turn into mass murderers. We bring in thousands of Muslims from a primitive society that has been battling Christians for centuries, and put them into a peaceful Christian society — what could possible go wrong? This is what I was thinking about yesterday, with much of the city under what amounted to martial law.

In 1962, at the Carlyle Hotel in New York, a man “peeled off his clothing and began prancing around his hotel suite.” His bodyguards were cautiously amused, until the man “left the suite and began roaming through the corridor of the Carlyle.” The man in question was delusional, paranoid and suffering a “psychotic break” from the effects of an overdose of methamphetamine. He was also the president of the United States. The reason for John F. Kennedy’s bizarre behavior was that, according to an explosive new book, the president was — unbeknownst to him, at first — a meth addict.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R.-Fla.), one of eight senators who have crafted legislation that would put illegal aliens on a path to U.S. citizenship, explained in a Senate floor speech yesterday that one of the reasons he wants to do this is that he believes illegal aliens are currently driving on U.S. roads without drivers licenses and auto insurance and his bill would encourage them to get licenses and buy insurance. Rubio explained that under his bill ilegal aliens who "have committed serious crimes" will be deported. However, the proposal will apparently not deem as a serious crime the habit

The Council on American Islamic Relations again offered sympathy to victims of the Boston Marathon bombing on Friday, but added a plea for Americans not to generalize and conclude that Muslim teachings influenced the suspect in any way. "Our focus is primarily on the victims," said Ahmed Rehab, executive director of the Chicago chapter at a press conference Friday afternoon. "We don´t want to be drawn into defending ourselves." Citing acts of violence in Boston and New York, Rehab blamed Islamophobic forces for inciting hate crimes.

Washington — The governor of Massachusetts says he has no idea what motivated the terrorists who exploded two bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Speaking Sunday on CBS’ ”Face the Nation,” Deval (deh-VAL’) Patrick said it’s hard to imagine why someone would deliberately harm, quote “innocent men, women and children in the way that these two fellows did.” Patrick also said law enforcers believe the immediate threat ended when the police killed one of the alleged terrorists and captured the other. The two men were brothers whose family had come to the U.S.

BOSTON - The surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings suffered an injury to his throat and may not be able to talk, a federal official told CNN on Saturday, possibly hindering attempts by authorities to question him about a motive in the attack. With one suspect dead, authorities believe answers to a motive and whether the brothers had help rest with Dzhokar Tsarnaev, who was captured Friday night just minutes after authorities had indicated that a massive manhunt for the suspect appeared to come up empty. Philip Mudd, former counterterror expert for the CIA and the FBI, joined Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday to discuss the nature of the threat posed by the Tsarnaev brothers and any network they may have been associated with in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings. He said the Boston attack reminded him more of the 1999 attack on Columbine than a terror event orchestrated by a foreign network. “I would charge these guys as murders not terrorists,” Mudd said of the suspects in the attack on the Boston Marathon. “Do you think we have to fear copycats – more of these small,
