As one who has sampled 140 proof Tennessee white lightning (moonshine) from a talented distiller who does everything right, I can authoritatively state that the best of the unlicensed stuff beats anything in a liquor store. The main problem is that the fly-by-nighters who patch their pots with lead brew up stuff that can kill you in one dose. The legal distillers are branching out into the potent artisan stuff that ought to be lovingly consumed, drop by fragrant drop.

My own favorite scotch whisky is Lagavulin (16 years old, 86 proof), although I haven't yet seen a higher proof bottling. Everyone knows the dangers of too much tipple. My usual drink is red wine (usually zinfandel, syrah, mourvedre, or cabernet sauvignon) in moderation. About five times a year I pour one ounce of premium scotch whisky into a snifter and drink it a drop at a time, taking thirty to forty-five minutes. It's the sensory experience that matters to me--not the anesthetizing power of the alcohol.

I can't imagine cognac at high proof, especially not a VSOP, but Booker's bourbon at 126 proof is really fine.

The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia has recently decreed that all churches in the Arabian Peninsula must be destroyed. “The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia is the most senior and most influential Sunni Muslim religious and legal authority in Saudi Arabia … His main role is to give opinions (fatwas) on legal matters and on social affairs. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”
