Caminata In Caracas
Human Events, by John R. Thomson and Norman Pino De Lion

Original Article

Posted By:PageTurner, 10/2/2012 8:37:01 PM

CARACAS – Sunday marked the culmination of Henrique Capriles Radonski´s surprisingly successful insurgent campaign to oust autocrat Hugo Chavez from the presidency of Venezuela. With a week to go before voting next Sunday, October 7, Spanish newspaper ABC estimated more one million Capriles supporters staged a caminata, walking eight miles, or in many cases further, to hear their candidate make a rousing 35 minute speech in the country’s capital city. The day was picture-perfect for a political demonstration: 75 degrees; bright, nearly cloudless skies; virtually no traffic.

What it was like on the ground at that mega-rally. This is quite a good piece.

It’s not often that Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) are on the same page when it comes to foreign policy. But the crisis in Egypt has aligned them on at least one issue. Both favor suspending foreign aid to the most populous Arab country. Here’s a key part of McCain’s joint statement with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.): “It is neither in our long-term national interest nor consistent with our values and laws to continue providing assistance at this time to Egypt’s interim government and military. We urge the Obama Administration to suspend U.S. assistance to Egypt and

Vancouver, British Columbia -- Michael Hallatt has spent more than $350,000 at Trader Joe´s in less than two years. But the popular grocery chain doesn´t ever want to see him again. "I´m their best customer," he said with a mix of pride and indignation. Every week, the former Bay Area resident drives his panel van across the border to buy a few thousand dollars worth of merchandise at Trader Joe´s stores in the States. He then turns around and resells the goods at his own shop in Canada for a profit. Now, despite the obvious affection Hallatt and his customers

WASHINGTON – The U.S. government announced Thursday that it has suspended the deportation of 552,918 undocumented young people since the Deferred Action program went into effect a year ago. The government has received a total of 573,404 requests under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an immigration program implemented by the Obama administration on Aug. 15, 2012, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The program suspends for two years the deportation of qualified undocumented youths and young adults who entered the United States as minors.

On Wednesday alone, 1,800 migrants were swept up in a massive raid on the supplies and building materials markets in Odintsovo. Another 2,850 illegal immigrants were detained over the past two months in the city of Lyubertsy. Authorities in the capital region detained thousands of people over the past few months in an unprecedented campaign against illegal immigrants

Congress: Unable to gain traction for his immigration bill, Sen. Marco Rubio is warning his fellow Republicans to pass it now because President Obama will otherwise enact amnesty without them. Is this any way to legislate? Rubio, who has been so impressive in the past, is beginning to disappoint with his desperate effort to enact the Gang of Eight´s immigration reform bill, which is expected to legalize millions of lawbreakers who disregarded U.S. immigration law in exchange for some hastily cobbled together border security programs. A Washington state bride-to-be whose wedding dress was stolen the day of the ceremony found a fairy godmother of sorts in an unlikely way: by calling 911. The News Tribune of Tacoma reports the bride-to-be called after her wedding dress was stolen out of her car near her home. The 911 operator who answered the call tells the paper that she took down the woman’s information as usual, but was touched by her story. “I finally figured out what was going on, and asked when the ceremony was scheduled,” Candice, who only wanted to give her first name, told The News Tribune. “When

An internet troll who harassed successful sellers on eBay in a bid to put them out of business has been exposed after years of abuse. Charles ´Chuck´ Fitch, from Canton, Michigan, is said to be the man behind the mask who calls himself Ebayisajoke and harasses not only the ecommerce website and PayPal but also those who use it. A television reporter in Detroit, Michigan, hired private investigators to track down the man who targeted individual customers, sending them a torrent of threatening abuse. They found him living in an apartment in the commuter town of Canton, but when they

Panama is insisting that the case of a North Korean ship carrying contraband Cuban weapons must be handled by the United Nations despite a soothing diplomatic note from Pyongyang, according a Panamanian government official. The verbal note from Pyongyang’s embassy in Havana noted that the ship did not seek to endanger the security of the Panama Canal and that North Korea hopes for “amiable cooperation” to resolve the case “diplomatically,” the official said. North Korea also asked in the note Friday that two of its diplomats be allowed into Panama to provide consular services to the 35 crewmen

Is there such thing as “class” in America? Not if you ask Rick Santorum. The once and possibly future GOP presidential candidate spoke to a Republican gathering in Lyon County, Iowa late last week and shared this piece of advice with his party: “Don’t use the term the other side uses.” That includes the “middle class.” Santorum proceeded to tear into President Obama for constantly invoking the term “middle class” in his speeches about the economy. “Since when in America do we have classes?” Santorum asked. “Since when in America are people stuck in areas

Labor activists using tactics adopted from the Occupy Wall Street movement are crashing restaurants across the nation in an effort to raise wages for workers – and they’re getting taxpayer money to fund the effort. Using a combination of federal grants and grants from left-leaning organizations, the Restaurant Opportunity Center, or ROC, is technically a charitable nonprofit and not a union. But their pro-worker messages, anti-employer protests and self-proclaimed goal of organizing service sector employees for the purposes of negotiating higher wages make ROC look and sound much like a labor union.

The officials said first responders stole electronics and money from an ATM. Another official said that police guarding the site overnight attempted to a take a safe from a bank in the burned-out arrivals hall, which also houses several foreign currency exchange shops.

From his first presidential campaign to the present, the president, his party and his administration have openly flouted existing laws, and it doesn´t seem there is any legal means of stopping him short of impeachment. As you may recall, the Democrats refused to fill vacant spots on the Federal Election Commission so that when the Obama campaign disabled the system to track contributions there was no way in 2008 to challenge and stop the practice and countless suspicious contributions, including many from overseas, found their way into his coffers.

"So, how many black friends do you have now?" It´s a question I get asked a lot, ever since I set out five years ago to find out why I, your typical middle-class white person, had no black friends at all. I do have black friends now, actually. Several. But I rarely offer that information when asked, because to ask white people how many black friends they have is to pose the wrong question. Critics say a Muslim group picked the wrong day — Sept. 11 — to march on Washington to complain about religious profiling and President Obama’s handling of an investigation into the terror attacks that rocked America 12 years ago. The mass demonstration, called the "Million Muslim March," was changed to a more mainstream-sounding event, "Million American March Against Fear," but the name did not seem to gain much traction and has apparently reverted back to its original title. American Muslim Political Action Committee (AMPAC), which is organizing the march, claims Muslims nationwide have been the victims of anti-Islamic bigotry in

Washington — Clinton nostalgia is being replaced by Clinton neuralgia. Why is it that America’s roil family always seems better in abstract than in concrete? The closer it gets to running the world once more, the more you are reminded of all the things that bugged you the last time around. The Clintons’ neediness, their sense of what they are owed in material terms for their public service, their assumption that they’re entitled to everyone’s money. Are we about to put the “For Rent” sign back on the Lincoln Bedroom? If Americans are worried about money in politics,

Nearly five years after moving into the White House, Michelle Obama could not look more at home. Posing in the formal Green Room, she appears both relaxed and invigorated, embracing the undefined (and undefinable) roles of Spouse in Chief, Role Model in Chief, and Mom in Chief. But it’s the last one that makes the first lady shine brightest of all. Put her in a room with kids—whether her own or the nation’s—and she glows.

With the latest major revelation about National Security Agency surveillance, there’s a huge taboo question that needs to be put out on the table: Has President Obama been deliberately lying about the NSA, or have his statements just been repeatedly “wrong”? After Barton Gellman’s blockbuster story today about the NSA breaking “privacy rules or overstepp(ing) its legal authority thousands of times each year,” the Washington Post published an attendant commentary with a headline declaring the president was merely “wrong” in last week suggesting that the NSA wasn’t “actually abusing” its legal authority. The implication is that when Obama made that comment

The 16-year-old girl’s once-beautiful face was grotesque. She had been disfigured beyond all recognition in the 18 months she had been held captive by the Comanche Indians. Now, she was being offered back to the Texan authorities by Indian chiefs as part of a peace negotiation. To gasps of horror from the watching crowds, the Indians presented her at the Council House in the ranching town of San Antonio in 1840, the year Queen Victoria married Prince Albert. ‘Her head, arms and face were full of bruises and sores,’ wrote one witness, Mary Maverick. ‘And her nose was actually burnt off to the bone.

At 6:30 am this morning my time - 5:30 am on the East Coast of the US - I received a telephone call from someone who identified himself as a "security official at Heathrow airport." He told me that my partner, David Miranda, had been "detained" at the London airport "under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act of 2000." David had spent the last week in Berlin, where he stayed with Laura Poitras, the US filmmaker who has worked with me extensively on the NSA stories.
