I have never understood the rationale for debate commissions, moderators, arbitrary questions, and all the rest of the window dressing. If Lincoln and Douglas et al. could debate without all the extras surely moderns could do so as well. The extra baggage just gets in the way and distorts the view of the candidates. It converts the debates into a weird combination of a TV quiz show and a beauty pageant.

It would be far simpler and much more informative merely to give the candidates a forum with a few simple rules and let them have at it, i.e. each other. There is too much process and too little content to the present format, regardless of who the "moderators" are.

Abolishing the question and answer format would also eliminate the ever present possibility of cheating by advance preparation from leaked questions.

Ofcourse there is no diversity. They are all Communists!

Jim Lehrer's probably the only competent moderator. It would be stupid to replace him for diversity's sake.

I like Jim Lehrer. Where is all the vitriol coming from? Are some of you confusing him with Bill Moyers? Now, HE's a man to dislike.

I don't know why we need debates anyway. Especially when we know the media will give Obama a "Win" no matter what.

They're concerned about tribal diversity characterized by genitalia and melanin, of course. Political diversity remains off the table.

I'm actually surprised that Romney let the debate preparers get away with appointing such a stacked deck of moderators and topics. Couldn't he demand that at least one of the debates be moderated by, say, Brit Hume?

They should have picked Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin as moderators.....Glen Beck as a back up.

Let him seethe. Want diversity? How about Arthel Nevill or Charles Payne, both African Americans from Fox. Want Asian minorities, how about Melissa Lee from CNBC or Betty Lu from Bloomberg. The criticism is correct. It's all white and liberal. While Lehrer is the least offensive of the three for the first debate they could have done a whole lot better.

The Lehrer person is outraged because his absolute right to dominate, which was arrogated by his ilk decades ago, has been challenged. A sort of lese majeste'.

I could moderate this debate and do a much more respectable job than any of the talking heads that have been assigned the task. Heck, any one of us L-Dotters would do a better job.

Liehrer, propagandist not journalist could never make it at FOX NEWS. He would not be fit to sweep the mail room.

R&R should listen to those of us who have been calling for an end of taxpayer money going to PBS & NPR. Romney can issue a blanket reversal of ALL of 0's executive edicts on day one. On day two he can close down the 'public TV & radio' branch of the demoRAT campaign, permanently.

Safe and reliable Jim Lehrer will safely and reliably ask Gov. Romney questions about abortion, same sex marriage, don't-ask-don't-tell, Obamacare contraception and that should safely and reliably fill up the allotted time for questions on "domestic policy." Debt, deficit, gun-running, exploding insurance premiums, death panels, gas prices and the "lesser issues" will just have to wait until 2016.

Lehrer asked John Kerry “You've repeatedly accused President Bush - not here tonight, but elsewhere before - of not telling
the truth about Iraq, essentially of lying to the American people about Iraq. Give us some examples of what you consider to be his not telling the truth.”

Lehrer: Mr President, ketchup or mustard on your hot dog?

Lehrer: Gov Romney (crowd boos), how dare you run against the greatest President this country has ever had?

Romney: Bias? What bias? (crowd boos)

#5 has it absolutely right! These are not debates just Q&A sessions. You want questions? OK each candidate should be able to ask the other candidate whatever he wants.
I hope, if Romney senses a setup, 'gotcha' question that he refuses to answer it. Newt did that in one of the debates and came off looking very good.

The reason that the media is so pleased as punch about hosting these debates is that they believe they push up the viewer numbers thus making off all their political ads.

As for Jim Lehrer, he is just covering all his liberal bases.

Let's give Jim a big trophy for being the Greatest Debate Moderator in All of Human History. Then, maybe, he'll go away.

Romney is a gifted debater. If the questions are slanted against him, he'll use it to his advantage. The moderators will be judged on their fairness, and if they fail to pose tough questions to the President, it will show.

Was this before or after Jim delivered his questions to Obama? Obama needs about a day or so to have the right answers.

You know, he needs to get them in the right order or it will sound like Johnny Carson's Karnack the Magnificent (without the laughs).

Put the candidates on soap boxes under the bright lights outdoors and let them deal with each other for two hours...just like Obama's hero, Honest Abe.

We would learn more about their character and unflattering habits; we could view them dealing with flies and moths--beats a moderator and media flacks.

Let him seethe. With the current crop of Pravda journalists foisting their political leanings on everyone daily what was he expecting? That we would bow down in awe at their debate moderators? They were probably all hand picked by Valerie Jarrett.

I might believe the debates were more objective if the panels included people like Mark Steyn, Victor Davis Hanson or Mark Levin. Until that happens they're nothing more than a bunch of liberal hack journalists fighting to protect their boy.

Lehrer hasn't been all there for five, ten years now, should have retired with his buddy MacNeil who was always the smarter one anyway.

David Rodham Gergen was the Conservative on McNeil/Lehrer. The conservative. Then he took a job in the Clinton Administration. That was the last day I watched.

Make Dr Thomas Sowell a moderator if you want diversity

I find it hard to picture Jim Lehrer seething over anything. A trifle irked, maybe, but not seething.

They don't care about diversity of ideology. They only care about the "racial and demographic makeup of the moderators" -- which should be completely IRRELEVANT!!

Debates meaningless to me at this point. Romney can drop his pants and moon the whole country for all I care & I will still vote for him.

We all know that Lehrer would love nothing more than to ask the Gungan softball questions but we will see. Now about diversity.
