| For two weeks, I’ve been listening to people and reading about the term “illegal immigrant.” I have gathered information from readers, advocates, reporters and editors. I even had a face-to-face meeting with the most visible proponent of a change to “undocumented,” Jose Antonio Vargas, who I found to be intelligent, passionate and charming. And I’ve thought a great deal about this volatile topic. As public editor, I don’t make rulings on style for The Times. All I can do is weigh in, express an opinion. You always have to wonder what the ulterior motive is if the NYT suddenly changes their position on the propaganda they publish. Since when were they concerned about their readers.

There are intelligent, passionate and charming people all over the world, but that gives them no right to be in the USA illegally, or to tell Americans how illegal aliens should be characterized or defined.

When I leave my wallet on the kitchen table, I am "undocumented". But I have a license and indicia of citizenship. The people being described are illegal aliens. If I crossed the border into Mexico without following the proper procedure, I would be an "illegal alien". It works both ways.

After attending the interfaith service in Boston on Thursday morning, he visited with hospitalized victims still recovering from the devastating twin blasts. Miss Rand was one of them.
