| This morning most of the nation's political attention is focused on tomorrow night's presidential debate in Denver. The next 36 hours will see a surplus supply of suggestions, pontifications and predictions about the rhetorical confrontation [Snip] Individual debates have rarely played a major determinative role in presidential elections over the last 52 years. The first debate of each general election season is usually great for TV ratings. But anyone seeking insight into the Nov. 6 outcome could do better to look at more profound underlying factors. When you examine all of the indicators outside of "who will you vote for", nothing looks good for zippy. Confidence down, wages/family income down, labor participation down, is-the-country-heading-in-the-right-direction impressions negative. All those things should have zippy clearly on the ropes.
So what's with these tight polls? Polling bias? Or as this article suggests, the Wilder effect on a national scale?

I takes Andrew a while to get to the part about savings:
To guess at how people might vote in 35 days, look at how they're behaving: Like squirrels.
Americans' savings rate has soared. Faced with Obama's failures and ongoing financial and political uncertainties, we've been pouring a record amount of our money not into purchases or investments to spur growth, but into insured savings accounts perceived as safer. Despite their abysmally low interest rates.
As a people, we've not been famous for diligently saving, in part, because of our perennial national confidence that even better times were coming for sure. Not anymore. The Fed counted a 5% jump in money squirreled away in savings accounts last spring, totaling nearly $7 trillion, the highest in nearly seven decades of such records.
People now have an aversion to risk.

Somewhat related but Romney has always encourgaged greater savings and proposed long ago that savings interest not be taxable.

Despite the endorsement of President Obama, Robin Kelly easily won election Tuesday night in a special House election to represent Illinois´ troubled Second Congressional District. The sprawling urban-suburban district, containing Chicago´s ugly South Side, was formerly represented by Jesse Jackson Jr., who like a number of Illinois politicians will be residing in a federal penitentiary for a while. In fact, the last three incumbents of the Second District´s seat have moved on to prison cells, as have some recent governors. But that’s probably coincidence.

President Obama was on again Monday about gun laws, not enforcing the existing ones. But getting some new ones, any new ones so he can claim some kind of political victory after all of the promises and vows he made in the emotional days last December. But Obama wasn´t working on the senators from his own party who will actually determine the fate of these measures. That would be political leadership. No, Obama was out of town again, up in Hartford for a photo op with Connecticut legislators and some Newtown families.

It´s a good thing this column is available online, so that residents of Memphis, New Orleans and Riverside, California can learn how unsafe their city is without having to venture outside. Those are the bottom three metropolitan areas where residents said they felt least safe walking alone at night in their neighborhood. From the safety of their little work cubicles somewhere, the number gnomes over at the Gallup organization have been accumulating data on perceived human well-being as part of their polling calls on many subjects. From that data comes the 50 most and least safe cities.

From up here, 240 miles above Broadway, New York City can look like a pretty nice place. No traffic. No garbage. No smells. No crime. And no nanny Napoleons issuing edicts over spices, soft drinks and cups. In a swift and strange reversal, Obama administration officials Thursday rushed to play down their own recent announcements of defensive U.S. military movements in response to threats and provocations from North Korea. The hereditary Communist dictatorship of the Kim family that took over the North after World War II has always been quirky, unpredictable and, well, mentally unbalanced by any modern governing standards. Remember how since-demoted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said we´d have to pass the massive ObamaCare health law to find out what´s in it? Well, now three years later that´s happening and a lot of people are not liking what they see. Remember how ObamaCare was going to save you money? Not going to happen. Premiums are going up, some by as much as 100%. And a new study by the nonpartisan Society of Actuaries finds that on average insurers will have to pay 32% more for claims under ObamaCare.

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." A new CNN/ORC International poll found President Obama´s overall approval rating has ticked up to 51 percent but ratings have fallen on his handling of the key issues on his agenda: immigration, guns, and the deficit. In a stunning end to one of the most aggressively unsuccessful tenures in retail history, JCPenney (JCP) last night announced that CEO Ron Johnson would be leaving effective immediately. Myron Ullman, Johnson´s predecessor at JCPenney, takes office as CEO. When Johnson was initially wooed by JCPenney, it was to serve as CEO with Ullman as Chairman. In January 2012, Ullman was unceremoniously removed from the board. Gone with Ullman was any control the Board of Directors had over Ron Johnson and his control of JCPenney resources.
