Coup d’états come in a variety of forms. Some are violent with arrogant colonels pointing forty-fives at the temples of their predecessors and blowing their brains out; others are stealthy with the citizens awakening on an ordinary morning to find their whole world has changed yet not a drop of blood has been shed. The latter is what has happened in America. We are the victims of a media coup d’état and are currently living under it. You will see that clearly in evidence on Wednesday night when the debates commence, each one moderated by a member
My father used to say, "Line them up against the wall and shoot them," but I suppose that's advocating violence, which would never do. s/o However, traitors used to be executed. Now they are celebrated. No wonder we are falling apart.
This is a very insightful article. But a funny thing happened on the way to the coup -- the internet.
Starting with Drudge, who's huge fame and fortune owes to the fact that Newsweek spiked the story on BJ Clinton. Then LittleGreenFootballs became famous for exposing the fraud that was Dan Rather (LGF has since revered back to the dark side). Many other examples, but Breitbart comes to mind with the Weiner tweeting story (and I am still suspicious of Andrew's death).
Its going to take more time because the current in favor of the leftists is strong, but we've already seen the death of the news paper industry and the move to online for them. But I do get the sense that we are gaining ground in this area. Hopefully its not too late.
HOW do you hold them accountable? They have no regard for their falling revenues. I don't want my government taking control of the media. I'm in my 60's and the media, certain parts of it, openly admitted that they misreported the Vietnam war in order to fulfill their agenda. We have been manipulated all of my life by this corrupt media and they have paid no price. If the media is considered by the people of the USA to be the fifth arm of the government and the one that holds our government accountable, they are a miserable, shameful, failure.
I'm always reminded of that scene in Evita where the people trash the offices of the newspaper "La Prensa." No true American would advocate violent overthrow of the government itself, which is forbidden by the Constitution anyway, but violent overthrow of the mainstream media isn't a bad idea. It wouldn't even have to be particularly violent. The wusses who work there would run with their tails between their legs at the first sign of trouble.
Nathan Rothschild in essence said: Control the money, control a country.
Sheldon Emry: "Conquest by the sword has rebellion as a consequence and needs constant force to maintain control. Conquest by debt can occur so insidiously that the conquered don't even realize they have new masters. Tribute is collected in the form of debt and taxes that the people believe they are paying for their own good. Their captors become the benefactors and protectors. Without realizing it, they are conquered and the instruments of their own society are used to transfer wealth to their captors and make the conquest complete.
We are inundated with the greatest debt any country in history has suffered. Has the war been lost?
There is a book titled, "None Dare Call It Treason" that if anyone in here hasn't read it, needs to read it if they can find it. It shows how the media has been infiltrated by communists, and this book was written in the '60s, so it's been a long, slow process and now they are entrenched.
Watergate was a media coup d'etat. I spotted it at the time and agonized over what was happening. It was a lonely time for me. Of course, I was nobody. But it was a lonely time also for the few Reoubican politicians who dared to stick by Nixon when everyone elser was running for cover and the people of our country stood dumbly by not sure what happened but knowing that somehow whatever it was Nixon was to blame.
More peoople understand now but Obama is giving our money away with both hands and has a big following of people withs their own hands stretched out. It may be too late. As the Jewish saying goes: "Too soon old, too late smart." That's ironic since most of them still haven't smartened up.
Don't be sdurprised if it is too late and don't blame Romney. It's late in the day to save our Republic. I was for Romney in 2008 but McCain and Huckabee very smartly teamed up to knock him out and many Ldotters were warning us of the dangers of the Mormon religion. .
All of this is so well known now and yet the Republicans still do not see that their real opponent is the MSM and refuse to run against them. Newt tried and did well until he inexplicably stopped. Then his campaign fell apart.
No one said this was going to be easy...so let's quit cauterwaling and get down to business...I'm going to the Romney HQs this morning and start calling...we will win this election around 52-48...Obama is losing Catholics by a wide margin and Independents...don't listen to the Baghdad Bob's and Betty's...who has a bigger circulation Drudge or the NYT
Unfortunately, even if Gov. Romney manages to defeat Obama in the election, the problem will still remain. Remember the Bush years? Everything Mr. Bush did was stupid; every problem was his fault.
For seven of W's eight years in office, the economy was growing, but it was never reported. Anything good or wise or pleasant that he did was played down or unmentioned. Anything at all that went wrong (Katrina?) was blamed on him.
If Gov. Romney were to win the coming elections, expect more of the same. It's not just that the media have become an arm of the Democrat Party, but the media seem to consider the Democrat Party to be their political action arm.
An awful lot of folks get their news from the internet and from radio broadcasts. Cannot watch the MSM when you are driving. I have not watched a newscast from a MSM outlet in 10 years, not a single one, period. It is like reading a book with many pages missing. Nor do i read anything written in a left-leaning newspaper. There are so many ways to get truthful, complete news facts, why not go there. I can stream live news from all over the Country on my computer,
Media bias comes as no surprise to most of us, but what is troubling is the fact that our Republican leaders seem to have lost the will to fight. There are those who could call press conferences but we hear nothing from them regarding the Benghazi attacks. Where is the leadership in that regard? Frankly, I am fearful that there is so much corruption in both parties that we have passed the point of no return. Blaming the media is just scratching the surface. It goes deeper than that. There is no leadership in place to make an attempt to counter the propaganda. Breitbart had it right. He was fearless in confronting the lies and misrepresentations. History will not be kind to those in power who stood by and did nothing. Edmund Burke words ring especially true today.
There are umpteen American reporters whose writings we view daily right here and on the Drudge blog. We have also been blessed with some recovering Democrat news people who contintue to speak out for America ... such voices as Bernie Goldberg, author of BIAS ... and Pat Caddell of today's news.
I believe. I believe that Good will win over the Evil. I believe Old Media will crash and burn. .... Old Media, after all, has become the voice of Evil.
I'd like to see someone with enough juice (Limbaugh?) call for an all out boycott of the msm, starting with NYT. Cancel subscriptions. Stop reading their articles on the internet. And, know that, if NYT prints anything important we need to know about, a few intrepid news junkies will have reviewed the article and posted it to Lucianne.com.
In reply to #21, yes, Fox News is changing. Virtually every program has to have a person to argue both sides. Some opinion pieces seem partial to the Left. They are so busy being fair and balanced that they are starting to tilt. I want factual news and if it is partial to one side or the other, I want the person to state his/her position. Hannity is Conservative and he makes no bones about it, as an example. Beckel is sickenly left, even when he is blatantly wrong. Another example.
It's a stealth coup d' etat that's been 4 or 5 decades in the making. It's only obvious now because they believe they are finally in complete control, and so they are brazen about it.
The groundwork was laid in our schools and universities. Year after year, wave upon wave of fresh new liberals...infesting every institution of our society. Now they feel the power of their numbers, so they are openly conspiring to suppress any opposition. They are consolidating their power.
I'm not even sure that an election victory alone will be enough to rid us of this infestation. Among other things, they have diabolically torn down our borders and invited and supported a massive invasion to swell their numbers. And they continue to try to ridicule and shame anyone who speaks out against the invasion.
No, more than just a win in this election may be needed to reverse this coup.
If I may scream: IF THE MODERATE AND CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY (we are still the majority!) DOES NOT GET OFF THEIR DUFFS AND VOTE (for Romney) THEN THEY WILL GET THE GOVERNMENT THEY DESERVE.
And if they do not vote, then I don't want to hear another griping word about America. And to Laura Ingram, Bill Kristol, Peggy Noonan, Joe Scarborough-YOU WERE COMPLICIT IN THE FALL OF AMERICA if Romney loses, imho.Just as you were complicit in helping obama get elected by your trashing of and/or constant griping about George W. Bush when he was in office. You weakened our side. And for what? Your purity...or was it your ratings?
I have had ENOUGH.I hope everyone has, too. WE ARE NOT VICTIMS AND WE CAN DEFEAT THE MEDIA...IF.WE.ARE.WILLING.
Please, anyone, tell me WHY Romney accepted the debates with all liberal moderators. Why do we roll over an play dead when it comes to standing up to the media? We must accept the fact that they will never be objective to us no matter the situation. This is about as asinine as McCain's strategy in 2008 never to speak harshly about BHO.
I agree with Jack Cashill. There is a conservative media that is cowardly. They refuse to confront the frauds of Obama. They are complicit with this media coup. Also, the Republican party as well. What sane person would agree to such a debate, where your enemy is the moderator. Your political foe's surrogates are the moderators. As Jeffrey Lord stated today: 'Obama has already won the debate'....the media will assure. Look at Ed Gillespie for instance. Quinn Gillespie & Associates (QGA) is an American bipartisan lobbying and communications firm founded in 2000 by Republican political strategist Ed Gillespie and Democratic operative Jack Quinn, WH counsel to Bill Clinton. This coup is also aided by Karl Rove, David Brooks, David Frum, Bill Kristol,Mike Murphy, and other Republican elites. There is a conservative media in bed with the liberal media.
Yeah, the Internet is a wondeful thing, but if Obama gets re-elected, you don't think he won't issue another Executive Order to strictly control its content under the guise of national security because only aftee he gets re-elected will he then acknowledge that Al Qaeda is not dead and thus, have to control everyhting in order to protect us.
There’s absolutely nothing moderate about the moderators who have been selected to moderate the final four debates leading up to this election.
Hidden agendas, as they always do, will reign supreme. Liberal bias will stealthily insinuate itself throughout the upcoming presidential and vice-presidential word wars. I’ve been harping on this issue for what seems like forever.
Here’s my bare bones version: This is not about County Supervisor or State Assembly. It’s about POTUS and VPOTUS. With only a timekeeper to guarantee fairness, just turn the candidates loose to question or challenge or accuse each other and let the American people evaluate how well or how poorly they do under pressure; not staged, not rehearsed, “without a net.”
This is not showbiz. This is real life. Ultimately, yours and mine!
We need a true all conservative cable network. One that won't have on a Juan Williams every other minute. No fair and balanced stooges. We also should start recruiting young people to the conservative philosphy and ideology. It's time to think ahead a few years. If we can raise millions of dollars for a political candidate, we can also lay a foundation for the future. I feel the conservatives are constantly being drowned out by all the liberal noise in the media. It's time we get a megaphone and not be afraid to use it.
Intuitively we all knew it was more than just media bias. The untruths and the omissions have become startling. We have been focused on the wrong enemy, it is not the empty chair guy, it's the media. Their power has escalated. The new media of the Internet can only reach those who are educated, read and have interest. As for the others......
WHy did the Romney camp go along with accepting the Libs as moderators? Many of us groaned when we heard it.
There is no [gay] media coup d'etat. It is a coup d'etat of the mind, made cosmic by biased education, peter panism, apostasy as art, and a lifetime of drugs. That there will be an Anti-Christ who is accepted by all indicates the world will be starving for a new kind of leadership that accepts a changing world character. Since we are laughing at the principled leaders we know, for not being not hipper than thou, we are destined to get the other kind. The traitor to principled values, or traitor for short. This man will kick you in the teeth, take everything you have including your soul, and tell you it's for your own good. And if your friends have a handful of teeth, and a pervert's tingle up their legs, what can a sheep like you do but go along to get along, proudly wearing the uniform of the 4th Reich. Those in the media will be so proud that their uniform has the pink epaulets.
Re FNC: just this morning, Hemmer and Martha referred to tommorrow's debate a "game" with "pre and post"game analysis hyping for viewers. Its all about promotion. We had a Border Guard murdered today in AZ,and another wounded. less than 30sec.one line sentence and more when we get it. 5 yrs ago it would have been camers, onsite commentary and minutes dedicated.
Now, however, all outlets seem to wait until some techy can send tweets,e-mails or some-such and the California guy can get back to them. What we hear from the "hosts" is the same thing we read on the "crawl"
Yes. I suppose the news today IS a game of personalities how "clever" the producers can be to intrepret what the Assoc. Press and Reuters believes `we need to be told" and how the outlet chooses to present it.
The greater game that the media is playing is with Islam. It is a greater threat to this country than any economic factors--which, by the way, are huge. So, we are going to lose our religious freedom because they are hiding the truth and seriousness of the threat posed by the spread of Islam.
We may only be able to stem the tide if Romney wins, but it will buy us and our children some time.
Watergate turned reporters into stars and with that came the vanity and arrogance associated with the famous. Dan Rather was proud he had helped to bring down a president, so much so that he tried it again with Bush but it exploded in his face instead.
The problem is the media became personalities and acted accordingly. The issues became less important and their egos and the money drove their actions. Rather perverted the expulsion of a flawed president with his own personal glory. Instead of seeing it as a sad task he was required to do, he took pleasure in it. Media personalities decided it was their job to make their mark in the world instead of simply reporting the news. Reporting wasn't good enough any more.
But I question the success of the coup. Most people do NOT trust the media. The more the media swings to their personal agenda, the more that people realize that they are not to be trusted. People know that alternatives exist and they are going to those alternatives as newspaper and TV users continue to decline. So if the media has taken over the palace, they may find that they have occupied an almost vacant building.
In addition to voting republican and praying that God's Will be done on November 6, I agree with what #28 and #37 said. I will continue to boycott MSM and will continue to get my daily news from Lucianne and Drudge. I refuse to be told how and what to think while watching the debates moderated, edited and reported on by MSM libs.

Fox News is the best out there, but it crossed the line when Santita Jackson became a commentator. Jesse Jackson's racism is blatantly obvious in every answer she gives. Did we really need more of that? She sits there with her immovable face except for the racist mouth that rapidly blathers over anyone else in the room.
I do watch a few other channels just for research purposes and invariably end up mad. BRENT BOZELL IS A TRUE AMERICAN HERO.
What you say is correct #25. Although I don't have any proof, I have this sneaky feeling that the socialist dems have pulled much of the Republican leadership aside and given them a lecture. This lecture would be along the lines of what the Soros henchman told Beck's superiors at a restaurant, when they were "negotiating" Beck's departure from Fox, "That ship has already sailed"(re: "Mr Beck is concerned about One World rule")
More than likely it isn't exactly cowardice, it's more likely complicity and outright collusion. Perhaps the democrats told the pubs that the proverbial "ship has sailed. There's no stopping it. You can either hop on board or get crushed". I can just hear it now, "this is a big f'ing deal we got here. Keep your mouth shut and get in on the spoils or be destroyed and forgotten". I see Boehner on that ship. Oh sure he shouted out a few, "h no Mr Presidents" but is by far and large ineffective at countering what this president does.
Look at what the pubs did with the extension of the debt limit last year. They had the dims cornered, no where to turn. It was a great time to lower the boom, with a big, "NO!". Then pubs snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with their gang of twelve or whatever and gave Obama EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTED, including the chance to axe up our military. Now our military is under assault, something that would have been unthinkable/untouchable under the Bushes, Reagan and maybe even Clinton.
If China goes to the UN and forecloses on us, Obama will say, "ok-that's what the UN declared, so their military will be arriving in American C-130's and C5's next week". Hat tip #10-you got it.
The only people paying attention to the 3-letter media are people older than 60. No one else pays attention, especially the 20-somethings who are fiercely independent due to the Internet. The influence of the MSM is dying off along with the greatest generation. Their doom is sure. This election is truly their last chance to influence anything in America.
I fear that when they realize they have occupied a vacant building, with the Tyrant Obama's help, they will---like the Occupoopers---instead seize the thriving building next door: the alternative media. This will be done with more assassinations, censorship and control of the internet, and general intimidation. It's what despots do.
I said many times they get their agenda from fascist/commie editorial meetings. And my experience from soviet union confirms it. As soon as the commies let them go (in 1992 and later) they became normal reporters and journalists. At least, they reflected the state of the country's thinking! I believe the same is hear, in America. But what can you do if you are beat into submission by your boss? Quit? No, for that you have to have cojones, and not all of them have that. My constant point is we have to push the conservative investors to invest in conservative mainstream media. Imo, this is the only way. Let them buy newspapers and local tv stations in bulk and force the course change. We, the populus, hungry for the common sense, will support it with subscriptions and buying those tv channels!
In continuation of #58: #33, I blame all of the above, including Bush, Rove, etc. They were taking those buckets of pi$$ and dung thrown at them by the media, even pandering to them, media, drones and leeches. They fell asleep at the helm while commies funneled the money to acorns and similar groups! Nothing was done to support conservative commonsensical Truthaganda! Please, read Rules for Radical Conservatives by David Kahane! Seems, that he is the only one who really laid out the path!
#56, you should click on lucianne's "The Connection", go to 2nd Amendment, The Range and check out The Old Buzzard. There are a large number of us "elderly, sedate" old buzzards out there ready to lock and load whenever necessary to defend ourselves and our Constitution. Old we may be, but sedate and running on empty we ain't.
#56 - I'm one of the "elderly" on this site. Just let one of 0's minions come to me and mine, and let them see how "sedate" I am...let them see if I can get out of my "armchair." Let me be in a McDonald's if they come for me, and see how fast I can get my weapon out of my carry purse!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, not sure your comment was warrented
@#7: Obama is waiting until after the election to pounce on the internet. Big Sis has an Executive Order waiting. The FCC will reign down on conservative talk radio too if Barack gets a 2nd term. Don`t think this regime has given up on the Fairness Doctrine. They`re biding their time.
We are one November 6th away from total tyranny. Don`t let that happen.
Frankly, the media is only one component of the coup that is underway. Some very dark forces have taken over every important American institution (congress, the courts, academia, the higher levels of the military, the federal bureaucracy, the media, etc) and believe they are a hair's breath from the total control they desire. The average citizen is just waking up to this fact. Things are going to get very, very ugly soon; even the Honey Boo Boos might finally wake up.
Roger Simon barely breaks the betrayal ice. Pat Caddell calls them THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE. But, Roger still calls them the good name "liberal" (the word MEANS FREEDOM). He copies Ann Coulter, Rush, Mark, the good guys, as well as “reigning” network enemies using "liberal" as a disguise for socialism, as fake ID. Way back to Cronkite NOT investigating deaths of JFK, RFK, MLK, it continues up to Breitbart. Our TV guys, the Hannitys, Stossells, all unionized, will NOT INVESTIGATE fellow unionized Couric Sawyer Brokaw Pelley millionaire enemy. Andrew died using the phrase, "cultural Marxism". Roger doesn’t go deep, but, it IS all about Communism. Hollywood proves it, no anti Communist films, NEVER showing decades of Stalin's Soviet Communist enslaving, murdering terrorism. Hollywood and TV media, both the good and the bad, won’t go down that road, won’t remember 100 million Stalinist Soviet driven deaths. Gulag Archipelago’s thousands of square miles of slavery until death, are eliminated from the art of film. Peter Weir daringly filmed it, in his recent brilliant, press shunned, Australian, THE WAY BACK, escaping from hell of the Gulag. Our Imposter is aiming down the road to that same Command Economy, bit by tortuous bit; only a few see it coming. Good light weight start, Roger, but it will change ONLY when you go against your fears, start calling ALL THE ENEMY by their real names: comrades, lefty, red, commie, statist, collectivist, totalitarian, authoritarian, fellow traveler, Communist sympathizer. New Media MUST CHALLENGE TV union conspiracy of evil. You’re right, Roger, THEY REMAIN IN POWER, cannot be voted out! And your book was a BEGINNING!
+1000 for all the above. Re FOX: Why did they have to be "fair and balanced" in the first place. Why couldn't they have been the conservative alternative all along. The other MSM people call them that, so why not be what we need? Instead they want to be fair to Dems who go out of their way to hate on any conservative or Repub person on the air. They filibuster, smirk, and interrupt without any comment from the Fox person. I say screw them and become the true conservative voice on the air.
This may be partially correct. As a working journalist, let me invite you into the newsroom to see how a news story is made and disseminated. Let’s say it’s the 1980s and the national 911 network has been unveiled. A lobbyist for a phone company sees an opportunity to sell more phones—get them to poor people who don’t have one. Approach Congress, which passes a law to tax everybody a small amount on their phone bill to fund landlines for the poor. I get the assignment. I report what Congress decided. My editor says: “You need a human interest angle." That is, start your story with somebody who will benefit from the new law. And of course, tell both sides. In the typical newsroom, the second part is easy. I probably have “the usual suspects” who hate government regulations on speed dial. But where to find a poor person? Ah ha! My network. In the old days, I e-mail the entire newsroom, asking: does anybody have a granny who could benefit from a free phone? Now it doesn’t matter that within an hour I get 100 people violently opposed to the law and only one granny. In my story, I just report both sides, one viewpoint from each! Assignment completed, and you’ll never know how sausage—er, news coverage, was made.
Here’s my question. I reported, why did YOU decide not to call your Congressman with outrage at this government intrusion? Why did YOU listen to other segments of your world, such as your church or fraternal organization or favorite movie, that urged you to show “compassion” for those in the “community” less fortunate?
Look, there’s plenty of blame to go around. I don’t think journalists caused the problem, but then I don’t work in TV news. That’s another story entirely.
#11, I remember that book title from those days, but wasn't old enough to read it then. I remember it was widely discussed.
#58, I love your phrase "Truthaganda." From your posts, it is clear that you know well what we face today in this country, having lived in the Soviet Union. I never would have believed that we in this country would have to worry that our freedoms would be stolen from us. We are fortunate to have people like you to tell us what could happen, if we aren't vigilant.
All great posts. I don't think we can expect anything remotely resembling the truth from the MSM anymore. They lie, and they also lie by omission.
I have never felt more strongly about an election than I do about this one. Many people I know say that, too. Let us all pray that the same God who helped our Founders create this country helps us now.
The very fact that the media has so blatantly skewed the facts/truth to elect their candidate as Leader of the free world -- my 33-yr-old daughter (& mother of two) has lost all trust in written history.
She thinks it has always been this way. And it has now trickled down to the canon of scriptures & her faith in God. That is how damaging this Coup d'Etat has been!!
Our Fourth Estate has become more powerful than each of our other three branches of government. And it really isn't our government! I feel like I live in Soviet Russia & Pravda is indoctrinating all the below avg intelligencia, the busy working class who don't have time to search the internet, & the elderly who don't know how to use it.
Tea party groups and fiscal conservatives wasted no time Wednesday in savaging a bipartisan budget agreement negotiated between House Republicans and Senate Democrats, drawing an unusually angry response from House Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican. All sides were rating the winners and losers in the deal struck a day earlier between House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, and Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray, Washington Democrat. The modest deficit-cutting deal had some sweeteners for defense contractors and oil drillers, while air travelers, federal workers and some corporate executives would take a hit.
The White House blasted Republicans on Wednesday for criticizing President Obama’s decision to shake hands with Cuban leader Raul Castro. “There used to be a pretty important principle, that originated in the Republican Party, I believe, that partisan politics should stop at the water’s edge,” said White House deputy press secretary Joshua Earnest. “It’s unfortunate that we did see a number of Republicans yesterday who criticized the president for a handshake.” Mr. Obama shook hands with Mr. Castro on stage in South Africa at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela on Tuesday. The U.S. does not have diplomatic relations with
FAIRPORT HARBOR, Ohio — It doesn’t take long to realize that Jim Majoros is passionate about his job, as he ponders the hue of a new hunting rifle he’s working on. “I’m going to call it ‘Persephone,’ ” he said, referring to the Greek goddess. “It’s going to be light green in color, you know, more soft, but for women who want to hunt.” Business is brisk for gunsmiths such as Majoros, who repairs and customizes firearms in this small Lake Erie beach town east of Cleveland. This year, more than 82,000 new concealed-carry weapons licenses were issued in Ohio
House Republicans appeared Wednesday to be rallying around an $85 billion deal to avert another government shutdown, brushing off complaints from their right wing that the effort would trade immediate spending cuts for less-certain long-term savings. After conducting a series of closed-door briefings and polling members during a late-afternoon vote, GOP leadership aides confidently predicted that the deal struck between House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray (D-Wash.) would sail through the House when it comes to a vote Thursday. The moment seemed to mark a potentially significant shift by House Republicans away
A year that began with President Barack Obama riding high after his re-election victory and inauguration ends with him in the biggest hole of his presidency. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds the president with more Americans disapproving of his job performance than ever before; with half saying they’re either disappointed or dissatisfied with his presidency; and with 54% believing he’s facing a long-term setback. Perhaps more significantly, Obama has seen a drop in key presidential attributes, such as being honest and straightforward, being able to handle a crisis and being able to achieve his goals. “These are
The federal health-care law is becoming a heavier political burden for President Barack Obama and his party, despite increased confidence in the economy and the public´s own generally upbeat sense of well-being, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll suggests. Disapproval of Mr. Obama´s job performance hit an all-time high in the poll, at 54%, amid the flawed rollout of the health law. Half of those polled now consider the law a bad idea, also a record high. The survey of 1,000 adults conducted between Dec. 4 and Dec. 8 found a sharp erosion since January in many of the
House and Senate negotiators announced Tuesday evening a $1.012 trillion two-year budget deal to replace some of the automatic spending sequester budget cuts and avert another government shutdown in January. Rep. Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, said the two-year plan is a win for Republicans since it reduces the deficit by $23 billion without raising taxes or sacrificing core conservative values. “As a conservative, I think this is a step in the right direction. What am I getting out of this? I’m getting more deficit reduction. So the deficit will go down more by passing this than if we did nothing,”
More than half of Senate Republicans facing reelection next year face potentially viable tea party challenges — a historically large threat to the GOP establishment that could, once again, kill the party’s chances of taking back control of the chamber. A surprise challenge to Sen. John Cornyn, the No. 2 GOP leader, emerged at the last minute before Texas’s election filing deadline late Monday, and on Tuesday a conservative group with deep pockets threw its financial support behind a radiologist, who has never run for office, in a primary against Sen. Pat Roberts (Kan.), a 16-year veteran. Many of the
The current continuing resolution on federal spending expires in January, and Paul Ryan (on behalf of the Republican House) has been negotiating with Patty Murray (on behalf of the Democratic Senate) for an agreement to set spending levels for the remainder of FY 2014. It is not hard to understand the political considerations that drive House Republicans: the Democrats have been threatening to shut down the government again, as a means of diverting attention from the Obamacare fiasco. Republican understandably don’t want that to happen. But in policy terms, today’s agreement, while not terrible, represents a step backward. Spending levels
Senator Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) was quick to announce his opposition to the Murray-Ryan budget deal: We need a government with less debt and an economy with more good paying jobs, and this budget fails to accomplish both goals, making it harder for more Americans to achieve the American Dream. Instead, this budget continues Washington’s irresponsible budgeting decisions by spending more money than the government takes in and placing additional financial burdens on everyday Americans. In the short run, this budget also cancels earlier spending reductions, instead of making some tough decisions about how to tackle our long-term fiscal challenges
Senator Ted Cruz (R., Texas) walked out of the memorial service for Nelson Mandela when Cuban “president” Raúl Castro began speaking. “Senator Cruz very much hopes that Castro learns the lessons of Nelson Mandela,” said Sean Rushton, Cruz’s communications director. “For decades, Castro has wrongly imprisoned and tortured countless innocents. Just as Mandela was released after 27 years in prison, Castro should finally release his political prisoners; he should hold free elections, and once and for all set the Cuban people free.” Earlier in the day, President Obama shook hands with Castro.
SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Forget about setting up those kegs or buffet tables in the parking lot before this season´s Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium. There will be no tailgating, according to the game´s committee CEO, Al Kelly. "You will be allowed to have food in your car and have drink in your car," Kelly said. "And provided you´re in the boundaries of a single parking space, you´ll be able to eat or drink right next to your car. However, you´re not going to be able to take out a lounge chair, you´re not going to be able to take out
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans

A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.
President Obama’s job approval among American voters has dropped to negative territory with just 38 percent voicing their approval versus the 58 who says they disapprove, according to a national poll released Tuesday by the independent Quinnipiac University. That is one percent less than the 39% who said they approved of him in last month’s poll. The majority of the 2,692 registered voters the University in early December said that the president is not honest and trustworthy. When asked, “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as President?,” respondents gave Obama lackluster ratings
Looks like this president can’t get away with flirting in front of his wife… It appears that first lady Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the way that President Barack Obama was acting toward Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during a ceremony honoring Nelson Mandela, and before too long, they switched seats. The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:
