Army Can’t Say What It Pays Disgraced General to Do

| What does Army Maj. Gen. William “Kip” Ward do for a living? The Army doesn’t seem to know. It knows where Ward works: He’s an assistant to Gen. Lloyd Austin, the Army’s vice chief of staff. But substantively, the Army seems to have no idea what Ward does for his money. After a week of research, the Army’s public relations office couldn’t come up with an answer. “The Army declines to comment on what Gen. Ward’s duties are,” George Wright, the Army’s deputy director of media relations, tells Danger Room It’s an unlikely position for Ward, who 18 months ago

Comments: Well, he's black and he's a general. Under the 0bama regime he doesn't have to actually do anything to retain a position and get paid. Otherwise he would have been forcibly retired by now.

Concur with OP. The article refers to the General's transgressions as minor. I disagree. Flag officers set the highest example and standard of ethical conduct.

General Ward got busted for what most Generals consider to be perqs of the job. I am personally aware of some military who have done worse --- and if you broaden your view to include all public servants, look at the general thievery that goes on year after year by elected congress people.

OP you are way off base denigrating Blacks and military flag officers as you have. Take a moment and research Ward's stellar career as a combat officer serving in every hot spot including the thankless top US military job in Israel before you slur. He was about to retire with the 4 stars he earned last year when the Obama folks who have an aversion to testosterone busted him of two of his stars...Ward took on tough assignments for the Bush Administration. Your comment also managed to disparage the service of another serious combat officer the Army Vice chief, Gen Austin, another blue-black-well over 6ft4in-balls the size of watermellons brother like myself...guess you have problems with LTC Allen West's military record, too...

A review of his ladder up the Army hierarchy shows that he has always been an affirmative action baby.
When he "took over command" of the troops in Africa, he was not posted there because a military presence was too "insensitive". So he was headquartered in Germany, where he and his wife ended up in an extremely grand estate - so grand that he commissioned a luxurious coffee table book on the place, and charged it to the Army.
There is a lot more out there on this guy - I remember him well from articles I found the last time he was talked about here.
Here's one:

It seems there are some who would defend him because he is black and others who question that his treatment is preferential because he is black. He could well be another Patton or MacArthur but just as easily another Powell or McClellan. I do not think his skin color is why he disgraced himself and his uniform but it seems it is enough to excuse him for some. For a combat leader as #5 mentions he seems to lack any of the important combat awards...Bronze Star, Silver Star or higher.

Whlle he saw himself entitled to lots of goodies, he wasn't smart enough to hide those perks. Shame on him. (I worked in a flight surgeon's office in Germany, and we did the flight physicals for officers, up to and including General Everest. And the top guys had perks. I once had a nice trip to The Hague on a major general's C-47, round trip. Sweet deal. And he passed his flight physical.

Black plus success does not equal affirmative action, particularly, in the military. The best example of affirmative action in the Army ocurred 3 year after Ward began his career...50 year old Alexander Haig got his 4th star as supreme allied commander, jumping over 236 other generals, including some Blacks.
AFRICOM was a creation of GWB and W tapped Ward as its first combatant commander...Ward WAS ALREADY IN STUTTGART as #2 in command USAEUR...AFRICOM is still not based in Africa but Ward was successful in schuttling the orginal format of having a state department civilian serving as #2 in this joint command...

Some of these charges are a bit petty, as far as I am concerned. Did he send an employee on a personal errand or did he ask for a favor. I have no problem doing favors. If I'm going to the store and you need something, I'll buy it for you. Just please be sure to at least offer to pay for it.

If General Ward were Sergeant First Class Ward and committed similar offenses, he'd now be Private Ward doing a stretch at Leavenworth. As it is, he'll most likely quietly retire as a 2-star general. There is no justice in the military justice system.

I think affirmative action is usually considered to be preferential treatment based on gender or skin color and not on merit. General Haig was a white male and while he did have political pull it was not based on affirmative action. In my opinion as a retired Army officer having served on various selection boards, affirmative action does occur in the military.

#12, consider an edit: “not solely on merit” … Both Haig and Powell worked in the WH for the Nixon (who instituted affirmative action) and Reagan both became 4 stars and both Secy of State… both earned considerable “political pull” but was it merit versus affirmative action that caused their respective advancements. Haig was a beneficiary of traditional affirmative action which I posit includes nepotism-the good ole boy network–ethnicity-family legacy…etc. Not too dissimilar from Gen Abrams to younger Gen Abrams, or John McCain being the grandson and son of Navy Admirals; or Mario Cuomo to Andrew Cuomo and Jesse Jackson to Jesse Jackson, Jr.; or Gwyneth Paltrow, George Clooney, Michael Douglas, Angelina Jolie, and Charles Wallace and dozens of others in the entertainment/media sphere.

I was under the impression we were not supposed to carry on conversations on here with other posters...is that not correct staff?
I think in general a person who claims to be the smartest in the room is usually not just as the person who claims to be the most honest is not likely to be. And in a like manner the person who refuses to acknowledge affirmative action exists is often the beneficiary of the same thing. If the only way a point can be made is to change the definition of the term under discussion then the point is less than valid.
President John F. Kennedy's Executive Order 10925 mandated "affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed, and that employees are treated during employment, without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin.

Nixon instituted and ramped up affirmative action, particularly when he extended it to to college admissions and to federal contracting via the Philadelphia Program crafted by Arthur Fletcher and his boss, then labor secy George Schultz...thus the Black Capitalism surge in the late 60's thru the 80's and the Black Dims detesting it as a token Republican initiative until the early 80's...advocated its dismantling in the 2nd Reagan term precisely because the definition is constantly changing to include more groups, and also because demographic trends show Whites will become a minoritity in this country as they are becoming now in some states...do Blacks and Hispanics really want to see the AA shoe on the other foot...

General Haig was a political general who was jumped over the other generals for one reason: He would not get Congressional approval for any posting in the US. But NATO CINC did not require Congressional Approval.
Powell? Meh. I was in V Corps when he was the commander but I was a lieutenant at the time, and he never made much of an impression on me. But on the other hand, he was a corps commander for like 10 minutes.

We at Townhall have been covering this hotly contested Senate race for months and the results are finally in: With 36 percent of precincts reporting, Elizabeth Warren has been declared the next junior Senator from Massachusetts. Warren has never held public office before and the eye-popping $40 million she raised this election cycle evidently proved more than enough to unseat incumbent Senator Scott Brown. This was the most expensive Senate race of 2012 -- by a long shot.

CNN’s Peter Hamby reported that Mitt Romney‘s internal polling showed President Obama leading in Ohio by five percentage points.Per Hamby’s post: The number represented a sharp final bump for Obama in Ohio, a race that had essentially been a tied race through much of the previous week, according to the campaign’s daily tracking. The polling, which also showed a tight race in Pennsylvania, explains why Romney officials decided to send their candidate on last-minute Election Day visits to Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

The Obama and Romney campaigns may be gearing up for a very late night, with one Obama campaign adviser predicting that in Florida alone, "they'll be counting until 2 a.m." The Obama adviser said signs suggest the race is quite tight, though the campaign claimed to be "holding strong" in key battlegrounds like Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The adviser also said turnout among black voters in Virginia was better than expected, suggesting that could be a problem for Mitt Romney. Republican operatives in Virginia, though, predicted a razor-thin victory for their candidate in the state.

Washington - Early returns on Tuesday in what is anticipated to be a dead even presidential election contained no surprises, as CNN projected President Barack Obama will win his home state of Illinois and eight other races while Republican challenger Mitt Romney will win nine states. All races called so far went as expected after the roller-coaster ride of an election campaign that was buffeted by a superstorm and missteps on both sides. Obama and Romney ran dead even in final polls that hinted at a result rivaling some of the closest presidential elections in history, reflecting the deep political

A week after Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast, a majority of voters said President Barack Obama’s response to the crisis wasn’t a factor in their vote, according to early exit polls. Fifty-five percent of those surveyed, per CBS News’ early exit polling released by radio station WKZO in Kalamazoo, Mich., said Obama’s handling of the storm was a minor factor in their vote or wasn’t a factor at all. Twenty-six percent named Sandy as an “important” factor, and 15 percent said it was the “most important” factor in their decision.

Mitt Romney is leading among independents in both Ohio and Virginia, early exit polls show. In Ohio, the former Massachusetts governor takes 56 percent of self-identified independents, compared with 40 percent for President Barack Obama. That’s a huge decrease for Obama from 2008, when the exit polls found him winning independents in Ohio by 12 points, 52 percent to 44 percent for John McCain. The numbers are similar but slightly tighter in Virginia: Romney takes 53 percent of independents there, according to ABC News exit polls, a 12-point lead over Obama. In 2008, Obama won independents in the state by

As expected, the presidential race is tight in Ohio, where the polls just closed: President Obama is winning women 55 percent to 44 percent in the early CBS News exit poll, while Mitt Romney is leading 52 percent to 46 percent among men. Women made up 51 percent of the electorate, compared to 49 percent among women. Thirty-nine percent of voters so far identified themselves as Democrats, compared to 30 percent calling themselves Republican. Thirty-one percent identified as independent or something else, and Romney has a big edge among this group - 56 percent to 40 percent for Mr. Obama.

As expected, Republican candidate for President, Mitt Romney, won West Virginia’s five electoral votes in Tuesday’s General Election over President Barack Obama. National media outlets called the race in West Virginia shortly after polls closed at 7:30 p.m. President Obama’s fate in West Virginia has never been in question, as he garnered just 60 percent of the democratic vote in the May primary. The other 40 percent of that vote went to Texas federal inmate Keith Judd, who was placed on the ballot in West Virginia. President Obama has been hugely unpopular in the Mountain State since he first ran

Early exit polls show Election Day voters are slightly more Republican than in 2008 and broadly concerned about the state of the U.S. economy. Six in 10 voters said the economy is their top issue according to the poll, which was released by The Associated Press and conducted on behalf of a consortium of media companies. Less than a quarter of voters said their families were better off than four years ago — a point seized on by many Republicans as the results leaked out.

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”
