| A recent study by a group of scientists at Stanford University found that the nutritional benefits of organic food have, to say the least, been oversold. Apres moi, le deluge. A furor has erupted. In our modern-day version of holy wars, we’ve replaced debates about gnosticism and Manichaeism with arguments about the virtues of locally grown versus sustainable versus organic. As with all wars over doctrine, the rhetoric has been fierce.

Those pesky chemicals have helped to feed the world. If we converted 100% of our food to being organic we would get lesser yields. That would mean fewer crops. Some say up to 30% of the worlds population would starve. So it seems to be a vanity thing. Not really healthier for you, but others will starve. So you pay more for something that doesn't really carry any benefits and others will suffer. Doesn't make sense to me. What could be a better definition of vain.

They also defended pyramid hats.

The closest I come to organic is buying produce at the local farmers market. Has nothing to do with organic, just like fresh and giving the locals the business.

Buy Organic - and Starve a 3rd World Child.
When farmers switch to organic processes the amount the raise drops by 40%. The best organic farmers in the world (the Amish) only produce 65% as much as a modern farmer on the same amount of land.
All this means is that the food supply goes down and the price goes up. And, the poor starve.

#2 exactly. BTW, it is the biggest myth ever that "liberals" are the only ones buying or growing their own organic produce. At the largest gourmet grocery store in Amarillo back in 2006, the produce manager was spouting off that the organic trend wouldn't last. Well, he sang a different tune within a few years. It was a top seller and they had extended the selection tremendously.

Are these the same folks who say that GMO (frankenfood) is good for you?
Recent studies published have shown that rats grown on frankenfood corn are developing more neoplasms than those fed non frankenfood.
Russia has banned frankenfood corn and I believe France and the rest of the EU will be looking at the possibility of banning it as well.
I'm not looneytunes about 'organic' btw; I agree with #4 re. farmer's market.
I'm just not sure 'GMO' is the way to go.

Organic gardening is GREAT (if you don't have money for pesticides or fertilizer). I got pretty good yields with rabbit, goat and chicken manure. Would have been better with petro-chemicals.
Heirloom varieties are good insurance against disease. (Heirlooms are GMO's also. Just over a longer time span.) Keep a few around for insurance. Use GMO's for the majority of your plantings.
IF you garden in a dry desert, more organic matter in the soil will help with water retention. Mulch helps with weed control.
IF you are farming hundreds (or thousands) of acres, you WILL go bankrupt farming organically.

Was sold on this hype back in the early 80s. Now I know better.
The real point in 'organic' food is that they are supposed to be 'chemical free' and therefore 'better' for you some how.
Nutritionally, the differences between organic and conventional are insignificant.
I was amazed to see racks of 'organic seeds' being sold in stores this past spring at 3x the price of normal seeds, as if they were going to make any difference in the plant !
Now, just imagine the moment when most commercial farmers switched to GMOs and use their product to feed the Bio-Fuel industry because they can get better ROI and we are stuck with only expensive organic foods....

I think a lot of enviroweenies would welcome the idea of a third of the world starving to death. Not themselves of course.
Some of them think humans are a virus destroying mother Earth.
Pol Pot tried to create a utopia in Cambodia by forcing the whole population onto farms. He worked them to death by the millions. I think he's the patron saint of organic farming.

"the Stanford study is seriously flawed and should never have been deemed scientifically rigorous enough to make national headlines."
"Scientists Tied to Tobacco Industry Propaganda, and Funding from Monsanto, Turn Attention to Organic Food"
“So we were not one bit surprised to find that the agribusiness giant Cargill, the world’s largest agricultural business enterprise, and foundations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which have deep ties to agricultural chemical and biotechnology corporations like Monsanto, have donated millions to Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute, where some of the scientists who published this study are affiliates and fellows.
"Stanford researchers had touted their independence by stating they had not received outside financial support for their study, but failed to delineate the close ties between their internal funding sources and industrialized agriculture and biotechnology interests."
Moral: 1. Always consider the source. 2. Always consider the funding.

Politics can have a very long reach. Today the federal tax system is a national disgrace: 4 million words, tens of thousands of special favors to rent-seeking individuals and companies, hopeless complexity. It is contradictory, arbitrary, duplicative, and deeply injurious to the federal fisc, American democracy, and our place in the world. But had Rufus King, a delegate from Massachusetts to the Constitutional Convention, received an answer to a reasonable question in 1787, or had a Supreme Court justice not changed his mind...

The four more years that the American electorate has granted President Obama will most likely be spent by the Republicans in feuding over the soul and destiny of their party. From the point of view of making the next Republican presidential nominee electable, it is difficult to imagine a worse strategy. After all, the last great Republican feud — the one that broke out between President Taft and Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 — ended in the election of a Democrat, Woodrow Wilson, and the current feud may put yet another Democrat in the White House in 2016.

This year my polling place was across the street from my apartment. Nice, I thought. I showed up at 6:05am wearing a pullover and no coat, expecting to be in and out. It turns out that they had five voting booths and a line that went on for blocks. There was a guy ahead of me in line wearing a gorilla suit. His vote counts the same as mine. It was 40 degrees out.

With Friday’s jobs report confirming the weakness of our economic recovery, the fiscal cliff rapidly coming into view, and American influence abroad continuing to erode, someone has to ask: is America doomed no matter who wins the presidential election? At first glance it certainly appears that way. Let’s begin by assuming that Mitt Romney ekes out a victory, winning the national popular vote by a point or two and capturing 275 electoral votes or thereabout. If Romney prevails — and I fervently hope he does — it will most likely be by slim margins such as these. Headline split by staff.

On a whole host of issues, Obama has placed politics before science. In his 2009 inaugural address, President Barack Obama promised to “restore science to its rightful place,” in addition to making the government more transparent and accountable. Millions rallied to his cause. Four years later, how has he done? Unfortunately, not well. On a whole host of issues, Obama has placed politics before science. We will examine just three of them: vaccines, the BP oil spill, and “Cash for Clunkers.” Headline corrected by staff. Author's name corrected by staff.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has made tax reform a centerpiece of his campaign. His catchphrase description of the proposal is “lower the rates and broaden the base,” a concept that enjoys support not just from other Republican candidates, but also from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and the Bowles-Simpson Fiscal Commission. But that catchphrase immediately introduces a problem: for the most part, only wonks know what “broaden the base” means. What follows is a two-step clarification of the concept.

Antitrust law protects consumers by protecting the competitive process — not individual competitors. Since 2010, U.S. and EU antitrust agencies have been investigating Google’s search practices. We’ve written a new white paper applying a Chicago School analysis to the potential legal theories against Google, finding that many of them face significant legal hurdles. Notably, Google’s critics, consisting mainly of its competitors, have alleged that Google is making it more difficult for them to compete in Internet search by including “specialized” search results in general search pages. The ethanol mandate continues to do more harm than good — inflicting environmental damage, raising food prices, and distorting energy markets. Two recent developments warrant a reexamination of the fuel ethanol issue. First, on August 20, 2012, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a call for comments on suspending the renewable fuel standard (RFS), sometimes known as the ethanol mandate: EPA is seeking comment on letters requesting a waiver of the renewable fuel standard and matters relevant to EPA’s consideration of those requests. There is no substitute for energy. The whole edifice of modern society is built upon it ... It is not “just another commodity” but the precondition of all commodities, a basic factor equal with air, water, and earth.—E. F. Schumacher, 1973 Energy costs are experienced in many ways in American society. There is, of course, the cost of energy you pay for directly, such as your monthly electricity and gas bills, gasoline, and so on. But people also pay for energy that they consume indirectly — that is, in the goods and services they consume. Author corrected by staff

If you look at the map of the states where McGovern ran ahead of his national average, you see something very much like the map of the states carried by Obama. Others who knew George McGovern much more closely than I have written warm remembrances of the former South Dakota senator and 1972 Democratic presidential nominee; see, for example, Bob Dole’s article in the Washington Post. But I feel some personal closeness to him, not just as a not entirely unrepentant McGovern voter and supporter in 1972, but also as a one-time neighbor — in Diamond Lake, Illinois, in 1947.

James R. Hagerty’s new book, The Fateful History of Fannie Mae: New Deal Birth to Mortgage Crisis Fall, shows how hard it is for administrations throughout history to know what they are really doing in their political attempts to manipulate the housing market. As Hagerty explains, the Eisenhower administration, working through the Housing Act of 1954, tried to wean Fannie off the government’s credit and make it operate with private capital. It succeeded instead in creating the essence of the fateful and costly government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) structure.

As the month of October progressed in the prosperous year of 1962, the country was preparing for Halloween, harvesting the last of the crops, attending football games, and getting ready for winter. It seemed a peaceful time, at least by Cold War standards. But unknown to the public—and certainly unknown to this 18-year-old freshman at Vanderbilt University—the greatest crisis of the Cold War was brewing.

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf, especially since popular public tours of the White House have been canceled because of

However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

Not only did she turn around—decisively—the British economy in the 1980s, she also saw her methods copied in more than 50 countries. "Thatcherism" was the most popular and successful way of running a country in the last quarter of the 20th century and into the 21st. Her origins were humble. Born Oct. 13, 1925, she was the daughter of a grocer in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham. Alfred Roberts was no ordinary shopkeeper.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded Monday that implementing the Affordable Care Act has been more complicated and frustrating than the Obama administration expected, largely due to Republicans who have opposed the law´s state-based exchanges and Medicaid expansion. "The politics has been relentless and that continues," Sebelius said. "There was some hope that once the Supreme Court ruled in July, and then once an election occurred there would be a sense that, ´This is the law of the land, let´s get on board, let´s make this work.´"
