| Iran's economy is edging towards collapse due to international sanctions over its controversial nuclear program, Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz told Israel Radio on Sunday. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has said that, although sanctions are taking their toll, they are not yet forcing Iran to abandon work that could soon lead to a nuclear warhead. However, Israeli officials appear increasingly ready to acknowledge the effect of recent American and European sanctions designed to restrict Iran's lifeline oil exports. "The sanctions on Iran in the past year jumped a level," Steinitz said.

Comments:
The sanctions are effecting the weak Iranian economy but the Iranian military expansion is actually increasing. All this indicates to me is that with the economic sanctions that the Iranian Islamonazis must make something happen sooner, rather than later.

Agreed, OP. This should be a cause for alarm, not optimism. At this point, an economically crippled Iran is dangerous like a cornered, wounded animal. Wounded, but still militarily alive. The momentum for war, on both sides, is building exponentially. How can it be stopped, or even should it be stopped - considering the consequences of a nuclear Iran?

Hard to tell about sanctions and such. The world is too complex. There are various nations who do help Iran, if only to aggravate the West.
North Korea has lasted sixty years. If a regime is willing to be brutal enough anything can happen.
If Iran gets desperate enough it will trigger a war. Otherwise it will trigger a war.

Sanctions do not reach the people in charge, period. If the hope is for the affected people to rise up against their leaders -- get serious.
Remember the objective here. Iran only needs time to develop their nuclear capability... all they have to do is hold out a little longer -- against citizens who already failed at an uprising and have no weapons or resources or foreign aid -- and then everything is moot: The world then has to deal with a nuclear capable Iran, which is what they wanted all along, and no amount of sanctions put the genie back in the bottle.
Given those conditions, Iran has no motivation to allow any pitiful sanctions to stop their progress. And that doesn't even begin to address their fanatical devotion to their doomsday anti-Israel cult ideals, which elevate this to a whole new level of dedication and willingness to persevere despite western interference.
Thinking this will be solved without military action is just insane. Israel knows that, even if the US administration and socialist Europe don't... and they will eventually act unilaterally if they are abandoned.

The mullahs are in a race against time, in the (reasonable) belief that if they can get the bomb before their economy collapses, the West will be forced to lift the sanctions. Israel should wait as long as possible, then bomb the nuclear sites, to allow the longest possible time for the economy to collapse before Iran can rebuild. If necessary, repeat every couple of years.

We at Townhall have been covering this hotly contested Senate race for months and the results are finally in: With 36 percent of precincts reporting, Elizabeth Warren has been declared the next junior Senator from Massachusetts. Warren has never held public office before and the eye-popping $40 million she raised this election cycle evidently proved more than enough to unseat incumbent Senator Scott Brown. This was the most expensive Senate race of 2012 -- by a long shot.

The Obama and Romney campaigns may be gearing up for a very late night, with one Obama campaign adviser predicting that in Florida alone, "they'll be counting until 2 a.m." The Obama adviser said signs suggest the race is quite tight, though the campaign claimed to be "holding strong" in key battlegrounds like Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. A week after Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast, a majority of voters said President Barack Obama’s response to the crisis wasn’t a factor in their vote, according to early exit polls. Fifty-five percent of those surveyed, per CBS News’ early exit polling released by radio station WKZO in Kalamazoo, Mich., said Obama’s handling of the storm was a minor factor in their vote or wasn’t a factor at all. As expected, the presidential race is tight in Ohio, where the polls just closed: President Obama is winning women 55 percent to 44 percent in the early CBS News exit poll, while Mitt Romney is leading 52 percent to 46 percent among men. Women made up 51 percent of the electorate, compared to 49 percent among women. Thirty-nine percent of voters so far identified themselves as Democrats, compared to 30 percent calling themselves Republican. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.
