An optimist's tour across America

| Depending on the poll, a majority of Americans say they believe our country is heading in the wrong direction, doubt their children will have a better future, and believe American values are eroding. This summer, I set out in a minvan with my husband and two kids to check the nation's pulse, to meet with dozens of people who are on the front lines, dealing with community problems from hunger to homelessness, from unemployment to the lack of affordable health care. I expected to find people defeated from a long effort to deal with the most brutal recession in our lifetimes.

It sounds like this lady and her family spent the entire trip talking to either gov't funded groups or volunteers. Not exactly the driving force in the economy. But then it is a USA Today (obama cheerleader) article.

I'll bet the kids had a blast on the "Pulse of Beaurocrat Nation Tour"! Thanks Mom and Dad, what a wonderful way to spend our summer vacation! USA Today...the newspaper you get for free at the hotel...and worth every cent.

Not one complaint from Michelle about the high cost of gas to fill up the tank on her mini van. It's the new normal doncha know. ..or USA Today picked up the tab for her family's "vacation".

Too bad she didn't spend an afternoon in an unemployment office and talk to the older workers tossed out of their good jobs just short of retirement. Or talk to the young college grads who are unable to find stable employment at all.

Do not miss the point of the article because of your politics. 'We the people' are not defeated yet. Wether or not these groups are federally funded or not they are getting results and making a difference. I have been doing some traveling myself and I am happy to report that America is still open for business. Gas is expensive but it is still available. 'We the people' who still have jobs are getting up everyday and going to our jobs and doing them well. Keep holding up your corner of the world and encourage others to do the same.

So Points of Light has been taken over by the leftists, optimistic that there is a limitless amount of money to be spent on'cleaning books', etc. G.H.W.Bush must be so sad. I could have told him that the liberals had done this as I saw it happening at my local Volunteer Center years ago. What a travesty of a normal trip.

Oh, yes, optimism is allowed in the press only when a leftist is in power.
This will be one of the last articles of this sort. When Romney wins, brace yourself for the tidal wave of articles about gas prices, suffering poor, homeless, etc. It will all strangely occur overnight too.

BOSTON - The Massachusetts man who found the surviving Boston Marathon bombing suspect hiding in his boat was glad to be able to help and feels lucky to be alive, he said Tuesday. "If I help these people that lost people, if I can help them in their mind, then everything is good with me here," David Henneberry, of Watertown, said in an interview aired Tuesday by WCVB-TV ( http://bit.ly/17gHpT3 ) in Boston. Henneberry said he went outside to get some air and check his boat Friday evening after police lifted a shelter-in-place order following an intense

Now Manti Te’o can be an imaginary first-round pick. Notre Dame’s celebrated middle linebacker was left standing at the NFL altar Thursday night after pre-draft speculation had him going to the Bears or Vikings. The Bears went with Kyle Long, filling a need at OG with the 20th pick while the Vikings passed on him three times, taking DT Sharrif Floyd at 23, CB Xavier Rhodes at 25 and WR Cordarrelle Patterson at 29. The Rams took ILB Alec Ogletree, and the Super Bowl champion Ravens, needing a MLB to replace Ray Lewis,

The Department of Agriculture, via the Mexican government, assures potentially ineligible immigrants that they can still apply for food stamps on behalf of their eligible children without giving information about their immigration status, according to documents released Thursday by Judicial Watch. A USDA Spanish language flyer provided to the Mexican Embassy, according to Judicial Watch, reads that if potentially ineligible immigrants want to obtain benefits for their children they “need not divulge information regarding your immigration status in seeking this benefit for your children.”

Sen. Max Baucus, who as chairman of the Finance Committee guided Obamacare down the tracks in the U.S. Senate, is changing his tune now that he’s about to retreat into Montana to hide in placid retirement. He sees “a huge train wreck coming down” with the implementation of President Obama’s health care takeover. Now he tells us. With no sense of irony, the senator complained to Kathleen Sebelius, the secretary of Health and Human Services, that he is “very concerned” that Obamacare exchanges will not open on time. “The administration’s public information campaign

In December 2011, when Ron Paul was leading the Republican presidential-primary pack in the Iowa caucuses, the former Texas congressman’s notorious newsletters resurfaced in the national debate. The newsletters’ content—a toxic stew of racism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, sympathy for right-wing militia movements, and support for a litany of conspiracy theories—had been revealed by this writer in 2008. But Paul’s latter-day resurgence, particularly with young voters and the Tea Party, provoked a renewed round of interest in his shady associations and fringe beliefs. Law enforcement officials are touting news that the Boston Marathon bombers acted alone. The source for their conclusion? Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who has averred from his hospital bed that he and his brother had no links to any terrorist organization. This may or may not be true; it’s possible that even if Dzhokhar is sincere he may not have known about links cultivated by his brother during Tamerlan’s sojourn to Dagestan last year. But even if it’s true that their bombing was not directed by foreign terrorist organizations, it was certainly inspired by them. In seeking to explain their heinous actions,

After four years of silent obscurity, former President George W. Bush will return the national spotlight Today for the inauguration of his presidential library in Dallas, Texas. When Bush left office back in 2009, he was the politician that everyone in America loved to hate. His approval ratings were in the tank at 33 percent — the lowest of any outgoing president since Richard Nixon — and just 24 percent of Americans approved of the way he had handled the economic collapse. On the eve of Bush´s political comeback tour, however, the American people appear to have largely forgiven

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was only 19 years old when he allegedly planned and carried out one of the worst acts of terror on U.S. soil since 9/11. This, however, is actually not an uncommon age for radicalization. In fact a number of suicide bombers and terrorist convicts were radicalized at around exactly this time; Hasib Hussain, for example, one of the London 7/7 bombers of 2004 was 18. This is when the existential wound that has been festering since childhood is most vulnerable to external forces. Radical Islamist ideology is a poison disguised as a cure. The critical challenge facing America’s counterterrorism agencies is to connect the dots that draw an outline of a plot in the making and then intervene to prevent death and destruction. Identifying the dots — those bits of information that are innocuous standing alone but together are terrifying — is perhaps the hardest aspect of the work. More, they don’t just come your way. You have to hunt them down. Self-evidently true, the basics bear repeating because there are serious questions as to how national security authorities failed to recognize that Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev was a brewing jihadist threat.

As travellers nationwide are learning, the White House has decided to express its dislike of the sequester—otherwise known as modestly smaller government—by choosing to cut basic air traffic control services. We wrote about this human- rights violation on Tuesday in "Flight Delays as Political Strategy," but the story gets worse the closer we look. Start with the Federal Aviation Administration, better known as the Postal Service without the modern technology. Flyers directly fund two-thirds of the FAA´s budget through 17 airline taxes and fees—about 20% of the cost of a $300 domestic ticket, up from 7% in the 1970s.

The Patrick administration clamped down the lid yesterday on Herald requests for details of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s government benefits, citing the dead terror mastermind’s right to privacy. Across the board, state agencies flatly refused to provide information about the taxpayer-funded lifestyle for the 26-year-old man and his brother and accused accomplice Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. On EBT card status or spending, state welfare spokesman Alec Loftus would only say Tamerlan Tsarnaev, his wife and 3-year-old daughter received benefits that ended in 2012. He declined further comment.

Two unnamed U.S. officials have told the Associated Press that the surviving suspect in the Boston bombings was unarmed when police captured him hiding inside a boat in a neighborhood back yard. The report contradicts the Boston police department´s own account of Dzhokar Tsarnaev´s capture on Friday - after commissioner Ed Davies described a firefight between him and officers before the terror suspect was captured. The New York Times also said an M4 rifle had been found on the boat - another claim contradicted by the latest revelations. Officers had originally said they had exchanged gunfire

During an April 24 address to the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), Attorney General Eric Holder told the crowd that “creating a pathway to earned citizenship” is a critical element of any comprehensive immigration reform plan. He said that establishing legal status for the nation’s estimated 11 million illegal immigrants is a “matter of civil and human rights.” “Creating a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million unauthorized immigrants in this country is essential,” Holder said to applause. “The way we treat our friends and neighbors who are undocumented by creating a mechanism for

Since the Boston bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was captured, there’s been quite a debate over his Miranda rights and how to treat him — given that he’s a United States citizen. An Associated Press report out this morning is sure to add fuel to the fire. As soon as he was read his Miranda rights, it says, Tsarnaev stopped talking. The report notes that Tsarnaev was read his rights 16 hours after his interrogation had began. Then, he fell silent: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev immediately stopped talking after a magistrate judge and a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s office entered his

Tuesday morning, a peculiar announcement trickled out of the White House press office: President Barack Obama would be holding a moment of silence for the victims of the Boston bombings. At the White House. By himself. No press or other intruders allowed. That Obama assumed Americans would want an iconic photo of him privately mourning the victims of the bombings was emblematic of a kind of hubris that has enveloped the president and his White House as the president commences his second term.

The new logo for the University of Connecticut’s sports teams is a terrifying husky dog that calls to mind images of sexual assault, says one student. The new logo was unveiled last week, receiving mixed-to-negative reviews from UConn fans who preferred the older, cuter husky dog. But one student went much further, criticizing the new, meaner logo for being a pro-rape symbol. In an open letter to UC President Susan Herbst, self-described feminist student Carolyn Luby wrote that the redesigned team logo will intimidate women and empower rape culture. UConn basketball coach Geno Auriemma said the logo

As Obamacare was winding its way through the Senate in 2009, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) slipped in an amendment requiring that members of Congress, and their staff, enroll in Obamacare’s health insurance exchanges. The idea was simple: that if Congress was going to impose Obamacare upon the country, it should have to experience what it is imposing firsthand. But now, word comes that Congress is quietly seeking to rescind that provision of the law, because members fear that staffers who face higher insurance costs will leave the Hill. The news has sparked outrage

The one clear thing that came out of last week´s chaotic activity in Boston, Massachusetts is that real reporters were missing. For that matter, they´ve been missing since last year´s attack in Benghazi. From Benghazi, the Gosnell abortion trial, gun control debates, immigration and then the Boston Marathon bombings, television news reporting has become positively painful to watch. The First Amendment to the Constitution grants freedom of the press but this was supposed to endow it with a responsibility to be the people´s watchdog. The modern Fourth Estate represented by the mainstream media has made a mockery of this privilege.
