| Tiger Woods was benched for the first time in his career at the Ryder Cup on Saturday - but Team USA thrived even without its biggest superstar. America's golfers pulled ahead of their European counterparts on the competition's second day, taking a 10-6 lead which leaves them in touching distance of the cup. The day's sport at Medinah Country Club in the suburbs of Chicago was watched by not one but two ex-Presidents - both George H.W. Bush and his son George W. attended the festivities.

Definitely check out the pictures. And comments after. The one pic of people reaching to shake hands with GW is a snapshot of how so many people feel these days.
I think the sky writing was rude ( the Tiger one ).

The bad old days before the dems took over congress were the days when we had honor, integrity, and decency in the oval office.
Always loved GWB and still do!

Tiger was benched because he is playing terrible. He isn't getting it done. Both Bush presidents have class, something that is totally lacking in the current WH.

By his own admission last week, in the six or so Ryder Cup competitions where he was a team member, he never made a contribution. That is over twelve years! Last time he was chosen over protests that his play was not up to snuff and that others deserved the slot more than he. But team captain Freddie Couples prevailed and he was there. And did precious little. Now we have him there again and doing precious little. We feel so sorry for his partner Steve Stricker, who is a fine player.
All of this said, Johnny Miller and little Jimmy Roberts and all the other fools at NBC continue to act as though Tiger is The Star of the Show. This is just plain wrong.
The coverage on Friday by ESPN was far superior. Time for NBC to either restaff its coverage team or make way for someone else to broadcast this event - and the other golf events they similarly mess up.
I have never known a golfer who would be so distracted by some skywriting, or even some planes, or someone coughing, or whatever, that it would ruin his game. Except maybe Tiger.

PS. GWB looked marvelous. We love his low-key attendance at events like this one. No fanfare, no red carpet, no trumpets, no fuss, no intimidating security presence. This classy man moves very graciously through the world, as does his wife.

The skywriting didn't seem to bother anyone, nor did the festive crowd which was more noisy than most. The only time we heard "Quiet" was when Tiger was about to putt. The other golfers didn't seem to require quiet to go about their business.
Tiger is past his prime, and just when you think he might possibly drop the diva bit and try being a regular guy, he doesn't. He keeps on keepin' on. And his golf is painful to watch.

We've had some superb golf, some painful golf, and some great "new" "ingredients" via the Ryder Cup format [all the more engaging because they are seen rarely, but that's good, as "team golf" with lesser players and less "at stake" would come so short of this contest!]. For me, it's been very entertaining and very interesting.
Low-key Davis Love, I think, is getting too little attention and credit.
Yes, Phelps and Jordan are Famous, and highly-accomplished in their own sports. But showing them in the crowd would basically be enough [for me, anyway]. The heavy breathing of the TV people, and the excessive TV time given them, is into get-a-room territory.
Jordan especially is a dissonant presence at Medinah. Speaking of -- can't TV spare a few minutes on The Shriners, and their good work? Hello?
Skywriting -- like the utterly moronic on-field "celebrations" [read: looka me!] of NFL players [that some broadcasts at least try not to air] after a tackle or sack [made a tackle, struck a pose? Got any idea how many tackles were made last season, jerk?], it's just attention-seeking. Don't give 'em airtime.

Presidents Bush [does one have to point out their work was many orders of magnitude more significant that Phelps and Jordan together?] were just "faces in the crowd." Reveals much about TV programmers failure to understand. I don't mean bias over Left-Right issues.
Woods sure has problems in his game, but it meant Stricker got to see parts of the course he would never have otherwise. I won't address Woods's off-course life.
Golf Channel, often better than the "Big Networks," embarrassed itself hugely last night. David Feherty, a naturalized American who clearly understands our exceptionalism, expressed a sense of perspective and appreciation for our military last night. The main-talking-head-host [who was ?] carried on like he never heard a word of it. Jerk.
Dual coverage by Golf Channel and the Big Networks [Ryder; British Open] shone light on the shortcomings of the BN princelings. There's a lot on which they are Clue Less. Clue. Less. And Tirico's et. al.'s several eighth-grade on-air "coverages" of the British starter's [or ?] bathroom schedule was as pointless and disgusting as it was revelatory of those princelings. Jerks.
Anyway -- good luck, Team USA.

#13 is right about Phelps and Jordan. We noticed early on that it seemed to be Michael Phelps Day at NBC Sports. Trying to turn him into a golfer.
Michael is a fine swimmer. He has the personality of a pet rock. And is not particularly attractive. I have low expectations for whatever they are trying to do with him. (It used to be that Wheaties boxes were enough.)
At least Jordan is a golfer. Has been for many years.

Rory McElroy seemed genuinely pleased to meet W, as was Tiger. Tiger's game has succumbed to age, and the "Tiger mystique" has evaporated, never to return. His opponents no longer feel defeated by his mere presence, and Jack's record of major wins is safe.

Tiger, by his own standards, has had a substandard year, with only three wins, tournament winnings only just now moving past $100 million, and a handful of top ten finishes, cuz he has not won a major, but he EARNED a Ryder Cup spot. Good thing we don't measure all golfers by his standards. For those who predicted several years ago he would never win again on tour, he has. Those now saying he'll never win another major to go along with the 14 he has earned need to remember Mickelson won his first of 4 at about the age Tiger is now.
Great tourney...enjoy!

The Daily Mail doing the Brit thing, taking the mickey out of Tiger. Turning the knife about his being benched, then getting another jab in about his well-known sensitivity to distractions, which are just about everything. A bird flying over, a sneeze, a camera shutter (who can hear a camera shutter at more than ten feet?), a leaf fluttering, a noisy cloud, etc., etc., etc. Almost anything can make Tigeroo stop dead an eyelash before hitting the ball.

Richard Pollack at the Washington Examiner reports on a painless way to handle sequester costs -- cut out the unnecessary duplicative federal programs: Duplicative drug abuse and treatment services are strewn over 76 federal programs. Housing services are spread across 20 different agencies. Renewable energy projects go through 23 federal agencies and 130 sub-agencies. Even federal catfish inspections are done by three different agencies. These are only a few of 162 examples identified by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, a congressional watchdog agency, of fragmented, duplicative federal programs and services.

WASHINGTON- Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says he wants U.S. military law changed so senior commanders can´t overturn courts-martial verdicts in major crimes such as rape. Hagel said the Pentagon´s top lawyers would prepare legislation for Congress that would strip commanders´ power to toss out convictions, "except for certain minor offenses that would not ordinarily warrant trial by court-martial." Convicted defendants still would be able to appeal their cases. But in a move berated by advocacy groups for military sexual-assault victims, Hagel also said he would recommend commanders retain the power to alter courts-martial sentences,

If presidential politics ever involved time travel, President Obama might be in a little trouble. If an election between Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama were held today, 58% would vote for Reagan over Obama, according to a survey of 1,000 Americans age 18 and older conducted by Kelton Research for the National Geographic Channel. Though when the field is narrowed to people ages 18-34 -- those either too young to have known Reagan as president or too young to remember much -- the gap shrinks to 51% in favor of Reagan.

With all due respect to Mother Jones´s conversation-leaker-in-chief David Corn, the recordings published today of a conversation between Sen. Mitch McConnell and some consultants disparaging Ashley Judd is not news. It´s the sausage being made. We´ve got full background here, but the toplines are this: Corn got hold of a conversation apparently recorded during a presentation by consultants to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell´s reelection campaign. The consultants were opposition researchers, hired by the campaign to ferret out damaging information about actress Ashley Judd, who at one point considered running against McConnell.

Obama was speaking yesterday at the University of Hartford when police, stationed along the president’s route to Bradley International Airport, heard noises coming from a nearby wooded area around 5:50 p.m., said Bloomfield police Capt. Stephen Hajdasz. A detective from the neighboring town of Simsbury ordered the man — identified as 27-year-old Joseph Stravinskas — to drop what appeared to be a rifle, according to Hajdasz.

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”
