Obama administration tells contractors again: Don’t issue layoff notices

| The Obama administration issued new guidance intended for defense contractors Friday afternoon, reiterating the administration’s position that the companies should not be issuing layoff notices over sequestration. The Labor Department issued guidance in July saying it would be “inappropriate” for contractors to issue notices of potential layoffs tied to sequestration cuts. But a few contractors, most notably Lockheed Martin, said they still were considering whether to issue the notices — which would be sent out just days before the November election. But the Friday guidance from the Office of Management and Budget raised the stakes in the dispute,

As I recall, the law was put into effect during Clintons presidency, to prevent contractors. Now obama demands the law be broken, not for workers but, for his personal gain. Are the Union members watching?

and so, if the layoffs occur with insufficient notice and the employees sue the contractors, any court costs to the contractors will be paid by all of us. The gov't will use borrowed, taxed or created money to cover their ''guidance''.

Actually, when the contractor tries to pass on the costs of not complying with the law to Government, the costs will be unallowable because their reimbursement were not part of the contract, statute, or written regulation. BTW, can you see a Romney administration agreeing to reimburse the contractors for complying with this extra-legal diktat?

These contractors should start sending out notices now and again at the 60 day point. The notices are about a possible layoff not a fact. Let as many as possible know what to expect under this admin.

Here is the possible scenario - the companies don't send the WARN notices, the unions sue, the federal government sides with the unions, the companies are found in violation of the law. The real irony here is that the WARN act was passed to protect workers, and obama is telling the companies not to protect the workers. I don't know exactly what barack taught in his 'constitutional law' course.

The facts are: because of 0bama's bad policies our economy is in a shambles; people are losing their jobs because of his poor management and horrid new regulations that stifle all businesses in America. So 0bama feels entitled to decree that these companies who KNOW they will lay off workers can not tell these people until he is once again elected. The ignorance and arrogance of this president is appalling.

All in all, it’s been a horrible week, and today has been no better. But this morning, a little beam of light amid the darkness. Ruslan Tsarniof, uncle of the Boston Bombers, came out of his house and, facing a gaggle of reporters, showed the best of America. Here was a confused, grieving man, who managed nonetheless to articulate in the heat of a difficut momement what is best about immigrants in the United States. Tsarniof praised assimilation and, crucially, he highlighted the potential problems that arise when newcomers refuse to “settle.”

If you thought President Obama was outraged after the Senate killed the plan to expand background checks on guns, you should have seen some members of the press. Even by the standards of today’s partisan media environment, the response has been noteworthy. Television hosts, editorial boards, and even some reporters have aggressively criticized and shamed the 46 Senators who opposed the plan, while some have even taken to actively soliciting the public to contact them directly. Flash back to 1972. Dr. Harvey Karman, a star of the abortion movement, came up with a bold publicity stunt. The 1972 "mass Mother´s Day abortion," as the Chicago Tribune described it, was designed to show that late-term abortions could be easy and safe. The site of this demonstration was the Philadelphia abortion clinic of Dr. Kermit Gosnell. The media was alerted, and television cameras rolled in. Arriving by bus were 18 pregnant women, half of them teenagers, who would undergo a new abortion technique called the "Super Coil." A Los Angeles Times article in April 1972 --

BOSTON -- A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation says a suspect has been taken into custody in the Boston Marathon bombings. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday. The official was not authorized to divulge details of the investigation. The official says the suspect is expected in federal court in Boston. Law enforcement agencies had earlier pleaded for the public to come forward with photos, videos or any information that might help them solve the twin bombings that killed three people and wounded more than 170 on Monday.

WASHINGTON — The Boston Marathon bombing marked a watershed moment that counterterrorism officials and specialists have dreaded for years: the use of multiple “improvised explosive devices,’’ or IEDs, to inflict mass casualties on US soil. Islamic militant groups routinely have used makeshift bombs — detonated nearly simultaneously — to kill civilian bystanders as well as military personnel from Iraq and Israel to Russia and Afghanistan. But until Monday’s explosions at the finish line in Copley Square, such street-level detonations targeting sidewalk or marketplace crowds had not occurred in the United States. “The sad thing is that finally someone

Authorities on Tuesday revealed little new information about the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon, the most high-profile bombing on U.S. soil in more than a decade and a tragedy that presents a new test for President Obama. Obama, like all Americans, is standing by, waiting for answers as to who planted two bombs improvised from pressure cookers at the finish line of the storied race, and why. Three Americans were killed in Monday´s attack and more than 170 others were injured. "Anytime bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror," Obama said,

In the Muslim world there were concerns about who might be blamed; in Britain thoughts turned to their own marathon set to take place Sunday. In its aftermath, the Boston Marathon bombings became a global news story, appearing on front pages in places ranging from Argentina to Turkey. Max Fisher of the Washington Post reported Monday afternoon on the fear that spread throughout the Muslim world that a potential bomber might turn out to be someone who practiced the same faith. He pointed attention to Jenan Moussa, a reporter for Al Aan TV based in Dubai.

This one wasn’t supposed to be close. In the weeks leading up to Venezuela’s April 14 presidential election, polls consistently showed Nicolás Maduro with a double-digit lead over Henrique Capriles, the opposition figure who lost to Hugo Chávez by 11 points (55 percent to 44 percent) back in October. Maduro had served as foreign minister under the late populist demagogue; he had been named vice president — and thus designated as Chávez’s successor — after the October election; and he had formally taken over as interim president following his mentor’s death from cancer on March 5. Maduro also enjoyed

An abiding lesson of the Obama Presidency is that no tax increase is ever enough. So it´s not surprising that the President´s new budget includes an increase in the death tax only three months after the last increase. In January Mr. Obama and Republicans agreed to tax estates at 40% with an exemption of $5 million ($10 million for couples). That was an increase from 35% and a $5 million exemption. Now only weeks later he´s again looking for more, as his budget proposes to raise the rate to 45% and reduce the exemption to $3.5 million.

Allies of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) say a series of attacks and ethical complaints leveled against him are part of a coordinated campaign by left-wing activists, political operatives, and journalists to prevent his reelection in 2014. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a left-wing watchdog group, filed an ethics complaint against McConnell on Thursday, alleging he improperly used Senate resources to support his reelection effort. The charges were based on a recording released earlier in the week by Mother Jones. Allegedly recorded by two members of Democratic Super PAC Progress Kentucky, the tape captured McConnell

While Maduro was celebrating, Capriles was calling fraud — and tweeting.(Snip for tweet)That message — "We alert the country and the world of the intent to change the will of the people!" — was followed by a speech to supporters. Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes--six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either. Why did the no-brainer bill fail? Four reasons:

While the media are bearing the brunt of public skepticism over the handling of the Boston bombing, the behavior of government is also eroding public trust. Yesterday´s promised but cancelled news briefing is just one symptom. Andrew McCarthy of PJM notes that "Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday´s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon," and that part of it is the natural outgrowth of the desire of investigators to keep the details of their investigations secret, so as not to alert suspects.

He was referencing the compromise authored by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) to expand background checks for gun buyers. It failed to advance in the Senate, with a vote Wednesday afternoon of 54 to 46.

The Bears center, who was picked No. 1 overall in the recent WNBA Draft (to the Phoenix Mercury) and is considered by many to be an all-time great in women’s college basketball, casually explained her sexual orientation to Sports Illustrated. Griner was asked by SI’s Maggie Gray on the difference between men’s and women’s sports when it comes to acceptance of sexual orientation; why the WNBA has been able to often embrace many lesbians within their sport, while male sports in America still waits on its first publicly gay player.
