Woods struggles, but Americans
lead at Ryder Cup

New York Times, by Karen Crouse

MEDINAH, Ill. — Tiger Woods’s troubles in Ryder Cup team play continued Friday as he struggled with driving, putting and chipping. But spurred by the Ryder Cup rookies Keegan Bradley and Webb Simpson, the United States team leads Europe, 5-3, after the first day of competition at Medinah Country Club. The teams split the morning foursomes, 2-2. But Bubba Watson, the reigning Masters champion, and Simpson, this year’s United States Open winner, birdied seven of the first eight holes against Paul Lawrie and Peter Hanson to lead off the afternoon best-ball session. Watson and Simpson were 6-up at

Comments:
All in all, it was a good day for the American team. Tiger played terribly in the morning but in the afternoon lost to the pytotechnics of Nicolas Colsaerts, who might have shot about 62 if they'd been in stroke play. Sometimes your opponent just plays light out and you get beaten. You shake his hand and congratulate him. That's golf. Captain DL3 must be pleased. Long time to go, though.

He won't win another Major with that huuuuge miss double-cross pull left when he gets quick in Foley's stack-and-tiltish swing method when he's trying to hit a fade under pressure. Needs to "let it go" again and not tthink "golf swing" but "score".

I told the wife if Colsaerts made that putt at 18, I'd never golf again. I quickly amended that saying no one should golf again. What would the point be? Anyone have an idea of how many feet of putts he made?

Wow, is this good.

The Ryder Cup rules and team format make it a different game, but as good as it is played this way, I don't think I'd want all, or even a lot, of golf played this way. And as a practical matter, only a very few teams as good as these could be fielded. That matters, too.

Observation on golf: there are, perhaps, few other sports or games that require such a range-of-skills-at-a-high-level as golf.

OP: Good comments. Thanks. We look forward to further observations.

Only driving, putting and chipping? (Is there something else?)

I felt sorry for Stricker, stuck with dud Tiger.

But it was fun to see the exuberant Phil Mickelson and Bradley Keegan, who were having the time of their lives today.

The crowd was exuberant as well, the whole thing seemed very festive, and none of the other golfers seemed to mind. And then Tiger had to have his usual "Quiet" call to the crowd. He is a tender little thing.

In my exuberance, I just reversed Keegan Bradley's name. Sorry.

Hazy, I guess you think you're good. Tell us what kind of relative level these guys are at. Is is like Double AA New Britain Rock Cats vs. NY Yankees? Inquiring minds want a pro golfer's assessment.

Curiously, humbly asking.

#4, #5: Don't feel bad for Stricker. He got to see parts of the golf course he didn't know were there.

And "Bradley Keegan" would be a good name for a TV or movie character, no?

Felt more sorry for Brandt Snedeker.. with the match tied on the 18th he hit what might possibly be the worst drive in golf history. But that's what makes the Ryder cup great.

Re #6: All twenty-four players, European and American are, I believe, among the top 35 players in the world. There are no dogs in either bunch. They either had to play their ways onto their respective teams, or were preceded by such a reputation that the captains had an easy time selecting them as a captain's pick. At this level of skill, the lowest rated player could easily beat the top rated player in a given round. On Sunday in the twelve individual matches, that's what we're going to see.

What I love most about Ryder Cup play is that it's all about pride and bragging rights with a little jingoism thrown in for the fun of it. Money, for once, is unimportant. These guys know each other well, and in many cases are close friends on and off the course. But if your friend is European and you're American (or vice versa) you want to beat him like the proverbial tomtom and maybe rub it in just a little. In two years he'll probably be back, and if you beat him before, he's gonna want some of you. It's your job to make sure he gets some, good and hard. Team play: it's the greatest fun in golf.

TAMPA — Federal and local officials have released little information Tuesday on the Hakken family, which reportedly was in Cuba on Monday. But CNN is reporting that one of its journalists in Cuba spoke to Joshua and Sharyn Hakken, who say their boys, ages 2 and 4, are fine. El Nuevo Herald, the Spanish-language newspaper affiliated with the Miami Herald, said Monday night that it had confirmed that the Hakkens were in the custody of Cuban immigration officials and were being attended to by U.S. consular officials. On Tuesday, CNN reported that Joshua and Sharyn Hakken were seen

He appears to be a threat for sure, though he is not threatening at all once you turn on the lights and see the hunting-lodge wall on his back. Make no mistake, Crist once was a real threat. TAMPA — They could be near Key West, in a cove or far out in the Gulf of Mexico by now. On Friday, authorities said the man who kidnapped his young children Wednesday is likely with his family on a 25-foot sailboat. And though the seas were choppy during Thursday´s storms, deputies say 35-year-old Joshua Hakken knows how to sail. Surveillance video even recorded him loading supplies onto the boat Wednesday, indicating the escape was planned. The U.S. Coast Guard and state marine units were scouring the water Friday. Civilian boaters also got a description of the sailboat

The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia has recently decreed that all churches in the Arabian Peninsula must be destroyed. “The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia is the most senior and most influential Sunni Muslim religious and legal authority in Saudi Arabia … His main role is to give opinions (fatwas) on legal matters and on social affairs. The Saudi court system is heavily influenced by the opinions of the Grand Mufti.” The Grand Mufti seems to have missed President Obama’s “New Beginning” Cairo speech. In my Weekly Standard cover story about the fallout from the “Climategate” email scandal three years ago, I offered the following question by way of prediction: Eventually the climate modeling community is going to have to reconsider the central question: Have the models the IPCC uses for its predictions of catastrophic warming overestimated the climate’s sensitivity to greenhouse gases? When composing the music for "The Barber of Seville," Rossini craved din and distraction, going so far as to beg his friends to remain close by while he worked amid the hubbub. He wrote with lightning speed, finishing the score in roughly three weeks. Tchaikovsky, by contrast, needed silence and solitude and found both in retreats into rural surroundings. Beethoven wrote with difficulty, laboring over "Fidelio" off and on for nearly a decade, which didn´t prevent his one opera from falling short of the sublimity of his best symphonies, quartets and works for piano. TAMPA - The weight you gain these days from a plateful of hefty stone crab claws soaked in drawn butter or mustard sauce is offset by the weight you lose from your wallet. Stone crab suddenly is hard to find in local restaurants and fish markets and expensive when it’s available. Blame the weather, natural population fluctuations and an influx of octopus that love stone crabs even more than hungry Floridians do. Stone crabs are only harvested along Florida’s Gulf Coast; the season runs from Oct. 15 to May 15. Crabs are trapped, pulled to the surface

One of the problems facing anyone trying to write about Winston Churchill´s early life is that Churchill himself wrote "My Early Life," one of the best autobiographies in the English language. Michael Shelden, the distinguished biographer of Graham Greene and George Orwell, has nonetheless done an entertaining and erudite job of presenting the disparate pieces of Churchill´s life between the ages of 26 and 40—with one glaring and regrettable exception. It was in this 1901-15 period, Mr. Shelden observes, that Churchill readied the Royal Navy for a world war, pursued a radical agenda of social reform, crossed

The Pax Americana ”is a term applied to the historical concept of relative peace in the Western Hemisphere and later the Western world resulting from the preponderance of power enjoyed by the United States beginning around the start of the 20th century.” For nearly three generations the world population has enjoyed a rising standard of living and the absence of general war. According to administration officials the party’s only just begun. “In September 2010, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton proclaimed a ‘new American Moment’ that would “lay the foundations for lasting American leadership for decades to come.”
