| Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R) is supporting Rep. Allen West's (R-Fla.) Democratic opponent, the latest sign he's trying to ingratiate himself with the state's Democrats ahead of a possible run for governor in 2014. "In this age of extremist politics, being willing to work with the other side is too often labeled a sign of weakness. It's just wrong," he says in a Thursday afternoon fundraising email to supporters of Democrat Patrick Murphy, who's running against West in the Palm Beach-based swing district. "I'm supporting Patrick Murphy because he is exactly

Unless the (R) means Rat, get rid of it. CC stopped being a pubbie a long time ago - when he lost in the primaries to Rubio.
MSMS trying to make it look like pubbie in-fighting when it's very far from the truth.

Re #19: That's very pungent. It's also unassailable.
If he ever believed a word he said in public prior to his gubernatorial stretch--and what a stretch!--member of the Florida bar Crist had one of those reverse-come-to-Jesus moments. He was robertmcnamaraed and joescarboroughed into submission. The malignancy had grown inside him for a long time, but when the world's unfriendliest looking personal injuries lawyer (with the same surname as a notorious pirate of yore) wiggled a nubile checkbook in front of him, Good Time Charlie just crème brûléed in his, um, briefs. He had an arrangement, and his slip 'n' fall employer paid better coin than he got for those table dances at the Green Iguana Lounge. So what if that lawyer was one of the biggest Democrat in the state? His principles were infinitely elastic; he never gave them much thought, anyway.
If Rep. West ever managed to secure an endorsement from the likes of the ex-guv with the Tequila Sunrise skin, he'd probably wonder what he ever did that was so wrong.

Reports indicate Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was mirandized by Federal Judge Marianne Bowler against the wishes of investigators who wanted to continue questioning the suspect. As news has come out of Bowler´s actions on April 22, Republican lawmakers have pressed the DOJ to explain "why it didn´t make a stronger bid to resist the judge´s plans." These lawmakers include House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-MI), who said, "We have a longstanding tradition that the judiciary does not interfere with investigations. This sets a very dangerous precedent."

Although law enforcement was lauded for quickly identifying and neutralizing both suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing last weekend, the FBI has much explaining to do over why now-deceased Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the suspects, managed to slip through the FBI’s fingers after two warnings from Russian intelligence two years ago that Tsarnaev was tied to “radical Islam.” Of particular concern is that around the same time the FBI was informed about Tsarnaev, the Obama administration’s policies handling terrorism relating in any way to Islamic extremists changed. As the country awoke to the news of a massive manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombers in the early morning hours of Friday, April 19, reporters began pressing sources at the FBI and the Justice Department for information on the two attackers, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The response, at least to some reporters: We don’t know anything about them. That claim, like so many that followed, wouldn’t hold up. Just five days later it was clear that the U.S. government generally, and the FBI in particular, had known more than a little about Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

During an April 24 address to the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), Attorney General Eric Holder told the crowd that “creating a pathway to earned citizenship” is a critical element of any comprehensive immigration reform plan. He said that establishing legal status for the nation’s estimated 11 million illegal immigrants is a “matter of civil and human rights.” “Creating a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million unauthorized immigrants in this country is essential,” Holder said to applause. “The way we treat our friends and neighbors who are undocumented by creating a mechanism for

Sen. John McCain on Friday pleaded with business leaders to rally behind the immigration reform bill that he negotiated as part of the Senate’s Gang of Eight. Speaking at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce´s immigration reform summit, McCain (R-Ariz.) said the bill needs the full-throated support of industry to make it to President Obama’s desk. “We need your help. We need you to inform the people you represent. We need their active support, not just passive,” McCain said. “We need all of you, we need all of the people you represent to be actively engaged in the community.”

The Boston Globe published a harrowing interview with the man whose vehicle the Tsarnaev brothers commandeered on the night they were trying to flee the police. It is the most extensive version of events yet of how the brothers forced their way into the Mercedes-Benz of the man, who The Globe’s reporter on the story, Eric Moskowitz, identifies as a 26-year old Chinese entrepreneur nicknamed Danny, and it provides a gripping narrative of the 90 minutes that he spent driving the brothers through neighborhoods just before the night ended in a shootout between the brothers and the police.

A bill that would end the Federal Aviation Administration’s furlough on air traffic controllers is now on its way to President Obama to sign. On Friday, the House passed the measure 361-41. On Thursday night, the Senate passed the legislation after most lawmakers had left the Capitol for a weeklong vacation. Earlier this week, lawmakers from both parties urged the Obama administration to postpone or cancel the furlough of air traffic controllers, with some accusing the FAA of playing politics as the cuts contributed to massive delays at airports across the country. The furloughs went into effect Sunday,

Louie Gohmert is a conservative firebrand. Not afraid to stand alone on an issue he believes in, the Texas congressman is often in the news for making statements deemed outrageous — or that are actually outrageous, depending our your perspective. On Wednesday, The Daily Caller spent the whole day shadowing him — from early morning baseball practice to an evening television hit — for an account that will be published next week. Below is the transcript of an interview conducted with Gohmert as he walked back to his office after a Fox Business Network television appearance on Capitol Hill.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Friday that it was time for the United States to “take it to the next step” in Syria in response to possible chemical weapons use, although she said that did not include putting “troops on the ground.” “I myself think that we have tolerated for too long all of the assaults on the Syrian people made by its own government,” Pelosi told reporters. “I think we have to take it to the next step. That does not mean troops on the ground." Pelosi’s comments were echoed by lawmakers from both parties

White House economist Alan Krueger hailed estimates for economic growth released Friday that showed the economy grew at a rate of 2.5 percent in the first quarter. "While there is more work to be done, this report, together with other economic indicators, provides further evidence that the economy is moving forward in the right direction," Krueger said in a statement. The advance estimate from the Bureau of Economic Analysis is good news, considering it follows the contraction reported by the Commerce Department in the previous quarter.

The Patrick administration clamped down the lid yesterday on Herald requests for details of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s government benefits, citing the dead terror mastermind’s right to privacy. Across the board, state agencies flatly refused to provide information about the taxpayer-funded lifestyle for the 26-year-old man and his brother and accused accomplice Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. On EBT card status or spending, state welfare spokesman Alec Loftus would only say Tamerlan Tsarnaev, his wife and 3-year-old daughter received benefits that ended in 2012. He declined further comment.

Two unnamed U.S. officials have told the Associated Press that the surviving suspect in the Boston bombings was unarmed when police captured him hiding inside a boat in a neighborhood back yard. The report contradicts the Boston police department´s own account of Dzhokar Tsarnaev´s capture on Friday - after commissioner Ed Davies described a firefight between him and officers before the terror suspect was captured. The New York Times also said an M4 rifle had been found on the boat - another claim contradicted by the latest revelations. Officers had originally said they had exchanged gunfire

Since the Boston bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was captured, there’s been quite a debate over his Miranda rights and how to treat him — given that he’s a United States citizen. An Associated Press report out this morning is sure to add fuel to the fire. As soon as he was read his Miranda rights, it says, Tsarnaev stopped talking. The report notes that Tsarnaev was read his rights 16 hours after his interrogation had began. Then, he fell silent: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev immediately stopped talking after a magistrate judge and a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s office entered his

Tuesday morning, a peculiar announcement trickled out of the White House press office: President Barack Obama would be holding a moment of silence for the victims of the Boston bombings. At the White House. By himself. No press or other intruders allowed. That Obama assumed Americans would want an iconic photo of him privately mourning the victims of the bombings was emblematic of a kind of hubris that has enveloped the president and his White House as the president commences his second term.

This time, it’s of GOP pollster and frequent Fox News analyst Frank Luntz remarking that Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, and other right-wing talk radio hosts are “problematic” for the Republican Party’s efforts to reach out to other demographics and to fight the polarization of politics. Most of his speech reportedly consisted of his thoughts on how words matter — for

Don’t be. It’s the new normal. Are you shocked by the Obama administration’s dissembling in response to terror attacks in Benghazi? Don’t be naïve. It’s the new normal. As Obamacare was winding its way through the Senate in 2009, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) slipped in an amendment requiring that members of Congress, and their staff, enroll in Obamacare’s health insurance exchanges. The idea was simple: that if Congress was going to impose Obamacare upon the country, it should have to experience what it is imposing firsthand. But now, word comes that Congress is quietly seeking to rescind that provision of the law, because members fear that staffers who face higher insurance costs will leave the Hill. The news has sparked outrage

The one clear thing that came out of last week´s chaotic activity in Boston, Massachusetts is that real reporters were missing. For that matter, they´ve been missing since last year´s attack in Benghazi. From Benghazi, the Gosnell abortion trial, gun control debates, immigration and then the Boston Marathon bombings, television news reporting has become positively painful to watch. The First Amendment to the Constitution grants freedom of the press but this was supposed to endow it with a responsibility to be the people´s watchdog. The modern Fourth Estate represented by the mainstream media has made a mockery of this privilege.
