There was a video leading the Drudge Report on Thursday afternoon of a poor black woman with messed-up teeth saying she's voting for President Obama because he gave her a free phone, and perhaps you have some questions about it. Questions like: Is this video racist? Is Obama really giving away phones? Is anyone really bothered by these Obama Phones? And, come on, this is just blatant racism, right? We'll try to answer them. Info corrected by staff
Comments: It is not possible to criticize Obama or any of his supporters for any reason whatsoever without some liberal calling you a racist.
The good news is that is a term is over-used, people begin ignoring it. When I watch such a video, I think of Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams and it keeps it all in perspective. Mia Love is proof the Black gene pool is not totally depleted.
It may be sterotypical, bbut not racist. The ad spekas for itself, there is no editing, no doctoring of the video. Maybe some racists will enjoy the video too much, some black people will cringe. but the video is not racist, but indicative of some failures in society.
OMG #5! I said the same thing to my dad last night when I heard it. I asked him if Flip Wilson had been resurrected (may Flip RIP). "Tha's righ' hunny." Seriously, was Flip being racist when he did it? I thought it was hilarious.
FTA: Strictly speaking, it's not a government-funded program: the telephone companies make payments to a fund administered by a non-profit called the Universal Service Administrative Company, but anyone with a phone bill chips in through a surcharge on their service.
What a crock. It's paid for by consumers via Congressional legislation.
FTA: Is this video racist? Let's start by saying it's racial.
Right. It's "racial" because: a) she happens to be black, apparently "poor" (though how is that proven?). She's also pretty stupid, IMO - since SHE obviously thinks the phones are "Obama phones".
But that's the whole issue - Obama DEPENDS on people like this woman. But to call this racist - or "racial" as the too-clever-by-half author calls it - is pathetic at best, and a blatant lie at the worst.
I know a bunch of people who get the phones along with their food stamps, by & large mostly low class trash, the result of years on welfare. Lots of white ones in the bunch. No, its not a racist thing.
I was wondering about the provenance of the cellular phone services so elegantly articulated by that fetching young lady on YouTube yesterday. Elspeth covered that, but seems to have embellished the story somewhat.
Obama has set back the inner city blacks back 30 years. The fact that they still want to vote for him on the basis of his skin color shows how irrelevant and hopelessly lost they really are becoming. People like this will always be a blight on society.
My first thought when I saw the article, [not the video] ..... was..... How Sad! ........ Selling your self to the D Party for a lousy Cell Phone.!!!!!
Is that racist? and if so ....how?
What is sad ...... is that so many people are for sell to the Ds for so little .......
Do they think so poorly of themselves that they put S-O-O-O low a value on Themselves and their Freedom!!!!!!!
And if so ...... WHO put them in that position?
Not the 300,000 Union troops who died to free them ........ nor the R. Congressmen who passed the 1950s Civil Rights........ legislation....
Maybe it was ..... and continues to be the D. politicians who after the C W disenfranchised them in the South ......... and who have for over a hundred years in the North ...... buought them and their votes for crumbs and small gifts .... phones and $10 bills each election.....
What's the big deal? She doesn't look much more ridiculous than most of what went on at the DNC. 0bama gives his supporters 'free stuff' and the recipients of 'free stuff' support 0bama. Look at all of the cronyism that has been exposed, so far. 0's buddies at solindra got millions, this woman got a free phone. Same principle. She just happens to be on video, excited about her handouts. Meanwhile, the fat demoRats hide with the big handouts.
Actually, the free-phone program began in 1984 under President Reagan. It was NOT caused by "progressive Republicans" but by a 40 year demonrat controlled Congress. President Reagan didn't supply the LANDLINES, anymore than obama does. TAXPAYERS pay for them...obama just greatly expanded the program and added Cell Phones, which weren't a necessity (sarcasm) in the 1980's..If the Ms.Reeve really wants to investigate "racism" she need look no further than at the face of the woman screaming about Mitt Romney and how much he "sucks". Good Grief!
Elspeth is the wife or shackup of Scott Beauchamp, the maggot who made up stories about war atrocities for the New Republic to smear the U.S. military. Why anything that Elspeth says now has any credibility whatsoever makes zero sense to me.
I'll bet it takes the total taxes of more than a few wage earners to support this woman and her brood. The shame of it all is that her vote (If she votes only once) cancels out mine. Uh, does that make me racist?
Um, Rush has a radio show. How would anyone know that the woman was African-American? He didn't say she was. Gee, I am confused. I think someone is embarrased by what this woman said and rather than attempting to defend it they accuse the people who play or post it of being evil racists.
The price of a Bitcoin was sent tumbling Wednesday after China´s largest exchange for the virtual currency said it would stop accepting yuan deposits — China´s local currency. The much-ballyhooed currency has now fallen by around 50% below the record trading highs seen at the end of November, when it briefly touched the $1,200 level. On Wednesday, the price of a Bitcoin was down approximately 20% to $550.
The Urban League of Greater Dallas fired one person and suspended three others after a video from a conservative activist reportedly showed the workers encouraging health care applicants to lie. An edited video was released Monday that seemingly shows so-called health care Navigators encouraging people to lie on forms signing up for health care to get better rates. The video was released by Project Veritas, which was started by conservative activist James O´Keefe. O´Keefe gained notoriety for videos in 2009 that eventually brought down ACORN.
Evelina Gonzalez was supposed to undergo cancer surgery in July following chemotherapy but wound up shuttling from hospital to hospital in search of an available operating table. On the crest of her left breast, a mocha-colored tumor doubled in size and now bulges through her white spandex tank top. Gonzalez is on a list of 31 breast cancer patients waiting to have tumors removed at one of Venezuela´s biggest medical facilities, Maracay´s Central Hospital. But like legions of the sick across the country, she´s been neglected by a health care system doctors say is collapsing after years of deterioration.
United States Secretary of State John Kerry has acknowledged that some of the government´s surveillance activities reached too far. Answering questions about the surveillance controversy on Thursday from attendees of the Open Government Partnership conference, Kerry said that some of the actions occurred because the program was on autopilot, inferring that the Obama administration was unaware of what was going on.
Identity theft is a scary phenomenon. It´s unnerving to think your identity could be out there somewhere, shambling around like a rotting zombie from The Walking Dead, wreaking unfathomable havoc on your reputation and credit score. But in the hands of a nefarious fraudster, that´s exactly what your digital identity could be doing. Unfortunately, it´s becoming more and more likely that you could fall prey to these thieves.
MOSCOW (The Borowitz Report)—The N.S.A. leaker Edward Snowden today reached out to the United States government, offering to fix its troubled healthcare.gov Web site in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Speaking from an undisclosed location in Russia, Mr. Snowden said he hacked the Web site over the weekend and thinks he is “pretty sure what the problem is.” “Look, this thing was built terribly,” he said. “It’s a government Web site, O.K.?” Mr. Snowden said that if an immunity deal can be worked out, “I can get to work on this thing right away—I don’t need a password.”
A two-decade family feud came to a violent end when a man shot dead the two home invaders that killed his wife and son, not knowing the assailants included his long-estranged daughter, authorities said Sunday. Though the investigation of Friday´s shootings continues, authorities said it appears Josephine and Jeffrey Ruckinger planned to murder her family at their rural central Pennsylvania home — but it remains unclear what exactly led to the deadly confrontation. [snip] Police say Roberta, 64, answered the door, and cried out something like "Oh my God, they have guns!" before her daughter shot her at point-blank range.
Less than four hours after a three-judge panel of the 3rd Court of Appeals reversed former U.S. House of Representative Tom Delay´s felony convictions and acquitted him of money laundering and conspiring to money launder, prosecutors from the Travis County District Attorney´s office said they will ask the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals to review that ruling.
The sun fired off an intense solar storm at Earth Wednesday (Aug. 21) — the second in two days — hurtling billions of tons of charged particles at our planet, but should not pose a threat to people on the ground, NASA says. The solar eruption, called a coronal mass ejection, occurred yesterday at 1:24 a.m. EDT (0524 GMT) and sent charged particles streaking outward at 380 miles per second. That´s just over 1.3 million mph (2.2 million km/h). The solar fallout from the sun storm is expected to reach Earth within the next three days.
Kim M. Catullo does not like giving interviews or getting behind a microphone. At political events, she tends to hover in the background, so much so that she is sometimes mistaken for a member of her wife’s security detail. But with the primary just weeks away, Ms. Catullo, the wife of Christine C. Quinn, is edging out of her comfort zone to take on a more visible role in Ms. Quinn’s campaign for mayor of New York City.
SEATTLE — Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com, told reporters today that his reported purchase of the Washington Post was a “gigantic mix-up,” explaining that he had clicked on the newspaper by mistake. “I guess I was just kind of browsing through their website and not paying close attention to what I was doing,” he said. “No way did I intend to buy anything.” Mr. Bezos said he had been oblivious to his online shopping error until earlier today, when he saw an unusual charge for two hundred and fifty million dollars on his American Express statement.
CLEVELAND — A former school bus driver who pleaded guilty to more than 900 counts, including aggravated murder, kidnapping and rape, after imprisoning three women in his west Cleveland house for a decade, gave a rambling justification for his crimes at his sentencing hearing Thursday, denying that he was depraved or violent and saying instead that there had been “a lot of harmony in that house.” Afterward, the man, Ariel Castro, 53, was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 1,000 years by Judge Michael J. Russo of Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.
Is this man simply expressing his beliefs or spewing bigotry?Either way, Phil Robertson, the patriarch in A&E´s "Duck Dynasty," won´t be duck calling on air anytime soon. The network suspended him after slamming gays in a magazine interview. In the January issue of GQ, Robertson said homosexuality is a sin and puts it in the same category as bestiality and promiscuity. "It seems like, to me, a vagina -- as a man -- would be more desirable than a man´s anus. That´s just me. I´m just thinking: There´s more there! She´s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was hospitalized early Friday morning as a “precaution” after feeling ill, a spokesman said, adding that doctors concluded "everything is normal" after testing. “Early this morning, Senator Reid was not feeling well and as a precaution decided to go to the hospital. Tests have been conducted and everything is normal. He is alert, resting and feeling better,” spokesman Adam Jentleson said in a statement. "Doctors have asked that he remain in the hospital for observation so he will not be working today." The Senate is set to finish its business for the year on Friday.
For a few hours, it looked like Americans would quietly accept the suspension of popular “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson for his unfiltered opinions about sin, sex, gays and blacks in a magazine interview. But then, as if on cue, hundreds of thousands of fans of the openly Christian, duck-hunting businessman took to social networks and started their backlash. As of Thursday night, more than 1.1 million people “liked” the “Stand With Phil Robertson” Facebook page, while about the same number had clicked their support for another Facebook page called “Boycott A&E Until Phil Robertson Is Put Back On Duck
The suspension of Phil Robertson from A&E’s Duck Dynasty is outrageous in a nation that values freedom, according to social critic and openly gay, dissident feminist Camille Paglia. “I speak with authority here, because I was openly gay before the ‘Stonewall rebellion,’ when it cost you something to be so. And I personally feel as a libertarian that people have the right to free thought and free speech,” Paglia, a professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, said on Laura Ingraham’s radio show Thursday. “In a democratic country, people have the right to be homophobic as well as they have
The Obama administration Thursday night significantly relaxed the rules of the health-care law for millions of consumers whose individual insurance policies have been canceled, saying they could buy bare-bones health plans or entirely avoid the requirement that most Americans have health insurance. The surprise announcement, four days before the Dec. 23 deadline for people to choose coverage that begins on Jan. 1, triggered an immediate backlash from the health insurance industry and raised new fairness questions about a law intended to promote affordable and comprehensive coverage. “This type of last-minute change will cause tremendous instability in the marketplace and lead
Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano has announced he is gay. Boitano´s personal news comes two days after the figure skater was named to the official United States 2014 Sochi Olympics delegation by President Obama. "While I am proud to play a public role in representing the American Olympic Delegation as a former Olympic athlete, I have always reserved my private life for my family and friends and will continue to do so," Boitano, 50, said in an official statement. (Snip) Boitano joins tennis player Billie Jean King and Olympic ice hockey bronze medalist Caitlin Cahow as the third openly gay athlete
The A&E Network’s suspension of Phil Robertson, star of the most popular reality show in the history of television, for espousing views on homosexuality identical to those found in the New Testament may not be the first PC lynching in the history of our country, but it is certainly now the most prominent. It is also a singular example of how political correctness, via cultural relativism, is used to undermine democracy and freedom of speech and is, at its core, fascistic. Yes, I just used the f-word and quite deliberately. PC and cultural relativism are the godchildren of Martin Heidegger
At 9:30 a.m. on December 19th, CNN´s Piers Morgan tweeted that the First Amendment "shouldn´t protect vile bigots" like Phil Robertson. And while making this claim, Morgan also reiterated his position that the Second Amendment "shouldn´t protect assault rifle devotees." Twitchy.com posted Morgan´s tweet, as well as one he sent six minutes earlier in he which typed, "Phil Robertson is not a ´victim of political correctness.´ He´s a victim of his own repulsively racist, homophobic bigotry." When defenders of Robertson´s right to speak his mind took to Twitter to tell Morgan how the First Amendment works, Morgan hedged himself in by tweeting, "Calm
It’s not unusual for President Obama to tweet out messages in support of his signature health care law, but a photo attached to one online missive is not getting the type of hype the White House had hoped for. The blogosphere and TV pundits are mocking the picture of a young “hipster”-type man in plaid pajamas and black-frame glasses who, while sipping a warm beverage, looks off camera with a slight grin. “Wear pajamas. Drink hot chocolate. Talk about getting health insurance,” the ad says. The photo got prominent play on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” eliciting laughter from its panel. “You are
Phil Robertson´s anti-gay comments aren´t the only part of his interview with GQ causing controversy. The 67-year-old "Duck Dynasty" star was suspended by A&E Wednesday for calling homosexuality sinful — and putting gay people in same category as terrorists. While those quotes quickly went viral, it wasn´t his only brow-raising statement in the interview; he also implied that African Americans were happier living under Jim Crow laws. "I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once," the reality star said of growing up in pre-Civil-Rights-era Louisiana. "Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked
This is the Obamacare Pajama boy in the latest Organizing for Action ad. Pajamacare boy is Ethan Krupp, an Organizing for Action employee and the subject of ridicule after OFA created a social ad encouraging everyone to sign up for Obamacare. Krupp was featured in the first "Get Talking" video, which was released by Organizing for Action in November. He thought that was pretty cool and said as much on Twitter.
America may be on the verge of a long-needed discussion over the limits of discourse on homosexual acts. Phil Robertson, patriarch of the family that stars in Duck Dynasty, the most popular program in the history of cable television, was interviewed by GQ Magazine, and was asked what in his mind is sinful: "Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there." (snip) Robertson spoke of homosexual behavior - i.e., acts. He took care not to characterize homosexuality per se as sinful. This is quite consistent with Christian doctrine of loving the sinner while hating the sin. That crucial point
