No, we didn't "evolve" this way. We were created from the first to live in family groups. Large families turn into clans; clans into tribes. Leaders rise to the fore based on the ability to protect the weakest members of the group. The first founders of America were members of "tribes" such as the Massachusetts Bay Colony and Plymouth Plantation. The individualists who settled here left no enduring ideas as embodied in the documents such as the Mayflower Compact or "The City Set on a Hill" of John Winthrop. God's plan is the Family. Within that context resides love and safety. No need to pretend we are animals thinly covered with a veneer of civility. That sort of thinking betrays a lack of faith in the Creator.

I’m not sure how widely it was known that Jonathan Winters, whom Robin Williams thought the best comic of his generation, was a conservative. In any case, I sometimes used to show students in my classes on the American Founding the early scene from “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World” where the whole gang tries to deliberate about how to divide the loot fairly when they finally got to the site where the loot was hidden, and how it could illustrate . . . the “great compromise” of the constitutional convention of 1787 in Philadelphia.

Perino was surprised not only by how much attention her performance got online, but also by the tone of that attention. Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.

LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends. Winters was a pioneer of improvisational standup comedy, with an exceptional gift for mimicry, a grab bag of eccentric personalities and a bottomless reservoir of creative energy.
