Veterans Wait for Benefits
as Claims Pile Up

New York Times, by James Dao

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 9/28/2012 6:09:22 AM

For Dennis Selsky, a Vietnam-era veteran with multiple sclerosis, it was lost documents. It seemed that every time he sent records to the Department of Veterans Affairs, they disappeared into the ether. For Mickel Withers, an Iraq war veteran with severe post-traumatic stress disorder, it was a bureaucratic foul-up. The department said he received National Guard pay in 2009, though he had left the Guard the previous year, and cut his disability compensation by $3,000. He filed for bankruptcy to protect himself from creditors. For Doris Hink, the widow of a World War II veteran, it was the waiting.

Comments:
Anyone else spot an agenda here? The ones getting free phones are potential Obama supporters. Veterans are not.

People who volunteer to serve file claims at a much higher rate then those who were forced to serve or go to jail. Go figure.

I am not sure your point, #1? The big upswing in claims is for a few reasons= Vietnam Era vets are retiring and the wars since 2001 have resulted in a lot less deaths per soldier (airmen, etc) but in many more devastating injuries. What is clear is that the Obama administration, which promised to help the vets in 2008, did not do that.

Dennis and his pals are going to the wrong offices.

Obama and his cronies know that VETERANS are more likely to vote for Romney and Republicans so who gives a rats rear about being sure they get the benefits they EARNED and DESERVED.

Dennis and his buddies need to high tail it over to the WELFARE, FOOD STAMPS and DISABILITY benefits office. Putting an Obama Flag bumper sticker on your car before showing up should guarantee you receive multiple benefits checks by November 5th.

A veteran should never file a claim with the VA without using an accredited service officer to act as their advocate. My Agent Orange appeal has been going on for 5 years now. Without that advocate everything would have been swept under the rug. The VA's motto is "DELAY, DENY, DIE"

Reply 6 - Posted by: timyak, 9/28/2012 8:09:04 AM     (No. 8895486)

The problem with this article is that 2 of the 3 cases shouldn't be receiving benefits at all. The widow of a WWII veteran shouldn't be getting her nursing home bill paid for by the taxpayers. The Vietnam Veteran with MS shouldn't be getting service connected disability either. I am a retired veteran who works at the VA and I see this type of crap everyday. I've even seen a veteran that is 100% service connected for acne scars. It's a total fraud that is being perpetrated on the American taxpayer.

Reply 7 - Posted by: chance_232, 9/28/2012 9:25:23 AM     (No. 8895616)

I think that the "lost files" spiel is a requirement. It's the VA's way of weeding out those who really dont want it. SSI disability is no better.

Three Questions on Immigration

‘Comprehensive immigration reform,” a deal on which is reportedly imminent, has a lot of moving parts — too many, in truth, as with most “comprehensive” legislation. Among the costs of comprehensivism is that debate over such bills often gets bogged down in the many details. Americans seeking to evaluate any deal should ask three questions about it to cut through the noise. First: Will it encourage future illegal immigration? This has always been the greatest risk of proposals to provide legal status for current illegal immigrants: that it will be seen as a reason for others to come here illegally

Long before Barack Obama dusted off his shoulders, Margaret Thatcher used a bright turquoise feather duster to sweep away the dirt of lingering socialism at the Conservative Party Conference in October 1975. (Snip for video)The Telegraph, which as a great old black-and-white picture of the occasion, says that it was "given to her by a member of the audience" at the party conference, where she delivered these remarks. Republican leaders in Congress received a dire warning on Tuesday from former Vice President Dick Cheney on the ongoing crisis in North Korea. “We’re in deep doo doo,” Cheney told lawmakers, according to a GOP leadership aide. Cheney added the current North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, is unpredictable and doesn´t share the United States worldview. One lawmaker present at the session, Rep. Steve Southerland of Florida, said Cheney wore a cowboy hat and "looked really good, spoke really clearly, lucidly.” “It was nice to see him doing well,” Southerland said, noting the last time Cheney was on Capitol Hill

How many federal agencies does it take to do catfish safety inspections? At least three, according to the Government Accountability Office, which on Tuesday released its 2013 report on fragmentation and duplication of federal programs. This year´s report -- there were two previous editions of the report first requested by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla. -- documents an estimated $95 billion in duplicative programs that waste precious tax dollars. That brings the three-year total of potential savings documented by GAO to $295 billion. Having three agencies doing catfish safety inspections may strike some as funny, but there is nothing to laugh about

Alan Dershowitz can be a frustrating man, but when he is good, he is very, very good. WASHINGTON — Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. showed up late at an event last week, saying he was delayed because “the president keeps those meetings going longer.” But he walked into a Hillary Clinton crowd. Outside, supporters hoisted signs urging her to run for president. Inside, she was greeted as a hero. Not that Mr. Biden was an afterthought. He had plenty of friends in the room. But at the Kennedy Center, where women’s achievements were being honored by an organization Mrs. Clinton helped found, even Mr. Biden recognized that the best applause line belonged to her.

There´s more than a touch of Chicken Little in common arguments for more infrastructure spending. "The bridges are falling, the bridges are falling!" Every four years, the American Society of Civil Engineers issues the U.S. an infrastructure "report card." And, just as predictably, it says that U.S. infrastructure is decrepit and needs expensive new investments. The latest one, released last month, gave the nation a D+ grade and recommended an extra $1.6 trillion in spending by 2020. Are American bridges actually falling, though? Is the U.S. underinvested in infrastructure? Maybe it´s going too far to say,

WASHINGTON — Contrary to assurances it has deployed U.S. drones only against known senior leaders of al Qaida and allied groups, the Obama administration has targeted and killed hundreds of suspected lower-level Afghan, Pakistani and unidentified “other” militants in scores of strikes in Pakistan’s rugged tribal area, classified U.S. intelligence reports show. The administration has said that strikes by the CIA’s missile-firing Predator and Reaper drones are authorized only against “specific senior operational leaders of al Qaida and associated forces” involved in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks who are plotting “imminent” violent attacks on Americans.

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Born Oct. 13, 1925, she was the daughter of a grocer in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham. Alfred Roberts was no ordinary shopkeeper.
