The IRS Has Gone Rogue
National Review Online, by Michael F. Cannon*

Original Article

Posted By:onashi, 9/26/2012 4:33:48 PM

A president who says “I haven’t raised taxes” has authorized his Internal Revenue Service issue a “final rule” that will illegally tax some 12 million individuals, plus large employers, in as many as 40 states beginning in 2014. Oklahoma’s attorney general has asked a federal court to block this rule. Members of Congress have introduced legislation in both the House and the Senate to quash it. At first glance, it might not seem that the IRS is up to anything nefarious. The rule in question concerns the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s tax credits, not the law’s tax increases.

My dear wonderful neighbor owns a nice size boatyard. Good business and attracts folks to our downtown area. The taxes were just raised $50,000 a year. That's raised 50,000 on top of whatever they were paying before.
I cannot imagine how you stay in business with that noose around your neck.

factoid I just made up. "Rogue' is IRS slang. Origin uncertain, probably shortened from "croquet".

Taxpayers are the balls, the tax laws are wickets, the IRS agents are the players who use the mallets.

Ought to be a must=read. Fools think they are getting something free. Revelation one comes when they read the fine-print and see the monthly premium for the insurance. The really nasty news comes a year later when the tax bill comes for the credit they didn't take when they decided not to buy insurance. The irony will be that residents in red states won't get hit with the tax bill (because they didn't set up a state exchange), just those in blue states.

I cannot remember exactly when Nelson Mandela entered my consciousness, but I remember the giddiness I felt when they were forced to turn him loose after 27 years of captivity. I remember, after his release, how the stories and the songs that before had passively comforted me exploded with a kinetic energy that shattered the skepticism I had about my place in the world. To me, he was David slaying Goliath with a sling and stone. He was Bob Marley´s "Duppy Conqueror." "… the bars could not hold me... force could not control me..." Today, however, I am afraid that we tend to view the lives of individuals like Mandela,

Blame GOP for woes of Obamacare

Our bankrupt politics is on strident display in the manufactured crisis engulfing Obamacare. In every newspaper and on every news channel, Republicans can be found salivating over the success of their sabotage campaign, while fair-weather Democrats, fearful of upcoming elections, are backsliding on their commitment to adequate and affordable health care. And what exactly is feeding the frenzy on both sides? We are being told that it is the botched rollout of a government website where individuals can shop and sign up for health insurance. We are being told also that it is President Obama´s broken promise, the one he

President Barack Obama is doubling down on his Obamacare lies. He is now trying to erase retroactively his point-blank assurance to the American people that “if you like your health-care plan, you will be able to keep your health-care plan, period.” Drawing on his golfing experience, he is insisting on a mulligan as millions of Americans are losing the health insurance policies they have chosen because of Obamacare mandates. “What we said was you could keep it if it hasn’t changed since the law was passed,” he told Obamacare’s political beneficiaries and contractors this past Monday during a speech they

Big Brother is not only watching you. He is eavesdropping on you, stealing your metadata, snooping in your email and telling you what to eat and which illnesses you can treat if you’re lucky enough to see a doctor once Obamacare is implemented. In Obama’s 1984, Mark Tapson shows that if he were here today George Orwell would see a disturbing resemblance between the U.S. and the dystopian future he wrote about so prophetically a generation ago. Obama’s 1984 takes the reader into the dark heart of this administration, a place of omnipresent NSA surveillance, police state tactics by the

I grew up in Concord, Massachusetts, and my elementary and high-school education was infused with the history that was all around us, so I was very curious to know just how the shutdown of the nation´s parks had affected my most favorite part of Minute Man National Park -- the Old North Bridge. Had the Park Service wrapped the iconic Minute Man sculpture by Daniel Chester French in burlap, so the tourists couldn´t see it? I took a few minutes on a perfectly gorgeous Columbus Day to find out. (snip for picture) As I expected, the parking lots had been

Last night (October 9), my wife brought home a pamphlet from our local CVS pharmacy, titled "Affordable Care Act Answers." I didn´t expect to find anything in this simple booklet that I didn´t already know, but it did refer me to their website on the topic, CVS.com/insurance, which my wife asked me to check out. On the website is this Q&A entry: Do I need to have insurance? Yes. The ACA requires all Americans have health care coverage "that meets basic minimum standards." I said to my wife, "That´s flat-out false," and I sent a brief, indignant note to CVS

There have been trying times when men of foresight, faith and conviction have helped us to transcend the frailty of our human condition and to soar mightily as if we were gods. This moment in time would seem tailor-made for the appearance of such a person. The civil war in Syria, in which that country´s brutal leader, Bashar al-Assad, is beset by opponents who are just as brutal, cries out for someone to show us with clarity, charity and certainty what should be done for the good of country and the world.

The economy is still puttering along, which is to say it is still not strong enough to help a lot of average Americans. (Snip) The bottom line approach is not easily embraced by many Americans. There are those of us who continue to labor under the belief that work is a means of self-expression and that a job should contribute to the wholesome growth and sustainability of family and community. I believe the majority of Americans still hold to this view, but what would happen if our society as a whole resorted to the corporate model of life, that is, pursuing it through the bottom line?

But the November 2012 elections got me charged up to the point where I felt the urge to do something public, and since my friends already knew how I felt, I didn´t think I would be divulging any secrets by doing so.

Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has said that ´a trained ape´ could do a better job managing American interests in Afghanistan than President Obama. The retired Republican made the insult while doing a phone-in interview for Greta Van Susteren´s Fox News show on Tuesday. He argued that the President made a serious error by failing to negotiate a status forces agreement with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Gawker points out that such an agreement would effectively commit the United States to having a certain number of troops in the country for a number of years beyond the already-agreed-upon plan which

One of them was found drunk and passed out in a hotel hallway, the people said. The hotel staff alerted the U.S. Embassy in the Netherlands after finding the unconscious agent Sunday morning, a day before Obama arrived in the country, according to two of the people. The embassy then alerted Secret Service managers on the presidential trip, which included Secret Service

A pair of potentially catastrophic cases will be argued before the Supreme Court on Tuesday. These cases are brought by privately held, for-profit corporations that are arguing their religious convictions should preclude them from offering employees the health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers don’t want to allow their employees’ insurance to cover some forms of birth control because, contrary to medicaland scientific evidence, they believe some birth control causes abortions. Corporations are not people. Corporations cannot have religious views. If religious rights are extended to corporations, it puts us on a slippery slope where any private company

Asked about this “delay” in the implementation of the ACA on Wednesday, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said that there has been no delay.
