The A-PORK-alypse is coming!
Global bacon, pork shortage
'now unavoidable' in 2013

Daily Mail [UK], by Staff

Original Article

Bacon lovers are advised to start bulk buying the breakfast favorite or switch to an alternative, as 'a world shortage of pork and bacon next year is now unavoidable,' warns an industry trade group. Annual production for Europe's main pig producers fell across the board between 2011 and 2012, a trend that 'is being mirrored around the world', warns Britain's National Pig Association. Today's announcement by the National Pig Association, is the latest warning sign of a global problem facing the industry and pork lovers everywhere. Last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture warned that the Summer drought

Comments:
Just a reminder. Checking on Amazon, you can still find Yoder's canned bacon and other pork products but the stocks are very low--4 cases left in one example and I doubt there'll be many more at the currently advertised price. Beprepared.com is no longer taking back orders for freeze-dried pork chops, only a promise to e-mail when/if they receive further deliveries. They're still taking orders for Yoder's bacon plus MH FD pork sausage crumbles and ham dice as of this posting.

A world without bacon is a catastrophe of the highest order. Perhaps even higher on the crisis scale than a nuclear Iran.

Seriously, this reminds me of my days consulting to the post-Soviet republics of Eastern Europe. Namely, their lack of comprehension that their chronic shortages of basic goods was a direct result of socialist central planning. That is, that they themselves were directly causing such shortages by artificially skewing natural market forces.

In this case, when the brilliant socialist planners redirect basic feed crops (corn) to inefficient other uses (ethanol), the result is a shortage of a previously inexpensive and efficient desired product (pork). Simple truths are so hard for ideologues to accept.

Great! And pork was the one affordable meat on the shelves. I just saw a T-bone for 12.50$ per pound. I remember having a coronary a few years ago when it hit 5.00 per pound. I can still get pork on sale for a buck 98 a pound.

Very little beef eaten in this household anymore.

Canned bacon, OP? I must admit I've never heard of it. A little research indicates the Yoder products are favored by survivalists because the shelf life is up to ten years.

How does it taste? I can't quite imagine it.

#6, we don't have a freezer so I store canned or freeze-dried products out of necessity. (Being in hurricane country we deliberately didn't buy a freezer.)

I tried Yoder's bacon years ago and it was very good. There are 31 reviews at the beprepared.com page and they're virtually all 5-star.

I've tried the freeze-dried scrambled eggs with bacon from BP and found it surprisingly good. Four reviews on that and an average of 4 stars.

And it’s all thanks to the central planners in Washington DC. The old Soviet Union could not have completed a shortage crises this fast. This is American ingenuity on steroids. We took cheap plentiful food and turned it into a huge shortage in less than 4 years! And all in the name of making less efficient and more expensive gas! To paraphrase Reagan, if you think you’ve seen socialism, you ain’t seen nothing yet!

Wild hogs, beware! We're coming after your bacon!

See, I knew these nuisances would eventually find their niche. And although their population deteriorates in hard years (as they have recently due to drought), they also reproduce like rabbits on steroids!! And some parts of Texas have had some good rains this year.

So I repeat myself: Beware, ye wild piggies!

There is a solution for this. Hog farmers should deal with schools to pick up all that stuff the kids throw out that Michelle requires them to serve in school cafeterias. Hogs are not real picky.

#12 Sorry, but get ready. Beef, pork & chicken will be going up in price. Supplies will be going down. Farmers & Ranchers are selling down thier herds. That means breeding stock, result, less babies next year.

Why sell with prices at record levels for thier product, input costs are higher than returns.
Your government is paying farmers to leave thier land unproductive. Because of that and the drought, corn and other feed products (when you can find them) are to high cost to come out.

P.S. Many grain farmers collecting on thier government subisidized insurance are making more profit than if they had a good crop.

All the pols like to say they are for farmers. But witch farmers? If you don't have the right product you are on your own. Livestock is not subsidized and insurance is not avaliable.

Beef and Pork producers are taking a loss on each head they harvest. Yes even at the prices you see in your meat case.

Why produce at a loss?

The author says that biodiesel made from vegetable oil was worse for the climate than fossil fuels. Under EU law, biofuels are set to make up 5% of the UK´s transport fuel from today. Since 2008, the UK has required fuel suppliers to add a growing proportion of sustainable materials into the petrol and diesel they supply. These biofuels are mainly

John Finan said the Department of Employment and Workforce will eliminate one-on-one help with unemployment claims on June 10, and the number of local offices offering job training and other re-employment services will shrink. Exactly how many of those 56 offices remain open past June will depend on decisions made by the state’s 12 workforce investment boards, he said.
