| Dayton, Ohio — Amid a flurry of recent polls showing Mitt Romney badly trailing in key swing states — especially in Ohio — a campaign adviser told reporters Tuesday that the race there is much closer than public polling suggests. Asked about a new Washington Post poll showing Romney down eight points in Ohio, political director Rich Beeson said their internal polls are telling a different story. "The public polls are what the public polls are," Beeson said. "I kind of hope the Obama campaign is basing their campaign decisions on the public polls... I have great faith in our data."

Maybe it's good news and maybe not. However, Romney needs to go on the attack as he has failed to do so far. Obama has handed him all the data and he needs to use it in attack ads in the 6wks left in the campaign.

We are playing game 9 in a 16 game season. There are things that are better left for the last few games than show the full hand now.
If Romney goes full scale attack now then he risks 'inoculating' many to his message. In this day of a 24 hour news cycle (or less), going full bore with 42 days left leaves too much time for rebuttal and potential recovery.
I say Romney needs to start to turn up the heat in the first debate, but leave room for escalation later.
Obama can rope-a-dope with a complicit press and get away with it.
What Romney really needs at this point in time is a display of passion for America. Obama is a cold-hearted narcissist who comes across as calculating and distant.
Romney needs to resonate with those who feel this country is slipping away. That will likely require some educational effort as well since the press sure as hell ain't going there.

There were few complaints at the Woodruff polls as South Carolina´s new voter photo ID requirement was enforced for the first time in Spartanburg County. The re-do election for mayor in Woodruff is the first Spartanburg County election since the photo ID requirement went into effect Jan. 1. The law requires voters to show a S.C. driver´s license, Department of Motor Vehicles ID card, voter registration card with photo, federal military ID or a United States passport to cast a ballot. (Snip) The law was passed in 2012 as a measure to combat voter fraud, according to proponents.

To the world beyond the Beltway, it might not mean much that Bob Woodward of the famed Watergate duo went public with his recent White House run-in. This would be an oversight. (Snip) Distrust of media, encouraged by alternative media seeking to enhance their own standing, has become a tool useful to the very powers the Fourth Estate was constitutionally endowed to monitor. When the president can bypass reporters to reach the public, it is not far-fetched to imagine a time — perhaps now? — when the state controls the message.

There are two stories circulating around Bob Woodward this morning. (Snip) But the White House also wanted the issue to disappear until after the election, so in conjunction with Congress it proposed (and the President specifically endorsed) an enforcement mechanism called sequestration. In exchange for agreeing to a package of $1.2T in cuts with no revenues as a failsafe, Republicans agreed to raise the debt limit high enough that it would not be reached until after the election. The significant point is that the trigger for sequestration was not the same date as the implementation date.

This just in from our Republican Insider, who has been very busy of late regarding the impending sequestration conflict that is being played out 24/7 by the Mainstream Media and the Obama White House. (Snip) Word of that compromise got out and reached the White House. I am guessing it was someone working for Reid who relayed that information. Regardless, it was the very next day that a staffer for one of the Senators working the compromise deal received word from Legislative Affairs to not under any circumstances continue to produce a compromise, or publicize any such deal.

Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.
