I watched his speech this morning. Actually the introduction from Clinton was very good - not just polite. And it was supposed to be a non-political event, so he wasn't expected to go after Obama. I thought his speech was terrific - and very impressive. He got a standing ovation from more than half the room.

No better way to shore up a sagging campaign than to suck up to Clinton and a bunch of democrats. /sarc

We need a good dose of Newt right about now.

What is to be gained from this?

#4, the campaign is not "sagging" and the very last thing Romney needs is a showboating performance from Newt and Calista. BTW, it appears Gingrich is trying to share Akin's diminishing spotlight, so is probably too busy to horn in on Mitt's.

A nice speech. Nice polite treatment from the audience. Clinton was most sincere and generous to Romney. This event helped Mitt not one bit. We have grown used to top tier Republicans sucking up to Bill Clinton.

Romney's closing paragraph of his remarks:

"A year from now, I hope to return to this meeting as president, having made substantial progress toward achieving the reforms I’ve outlined. But I also hope to remind the world of the goodness and the bigness of the American heart. I will never apologize for America. I believe that America has been one of the greatest forces for good the world has ever known. We can hold that knowledge in our hearts with humility and unwavering conviction."

And God willing, Mitt - we'll make that happen!!

Newt's appearance would erase every gain the Republicans have made with women.

Regardless of what his campaign is doing Romney plays right into the narrative.

My 24 year old skull-full-of-mush son made the comment yesterday that " . . . Romney is making a fool of himself these days . . ."

Don't think that his appearance with Bill Clinton sucking up to a room full of democrats makes him any points. A few good swipes would mean a lot! He had not trouble making them during the primary.

My impression of the speech is the same as # 3.....It was very good, very good!....I didn't get the impression he was 'sucking up' to Clinton as much as he was using Clinton and the opportunity to get his view and points across to a section of voters who wouldn't ordinarily be captive to listening to him.....He was strong & supportive of all things conservative.... free market.... and moral....He hit all the high points, including allegiance to Israel as our ally.

He should have added the word "military" in describing why America has been the greatest force of good in the history of the world.

I read the speech on Michelle Malkin's site. I thought it was very good, it showed he is taking a fresh approach to foreign aid and will attempt to use free trade to bring up the impoverished around the world.

Very Presidential - then there's that imposter at the UN today - not there's somebody just reading someone else's words, with no idea of what they mean or if they matter.

Geez, if just one person walked out of that room with a changed mind about Romney, then it was well worth it. That one person COULD influence many others. But right on cue, here comes the sour pusses with their "He shoulda woulda coulda" crap.

The guy can't campaign ONLY to people who are already gonna vote for him...

Mitt Romney did not need to "pull his punches". Just more garbage from Reuters! And it was NOT the place for a Political speech, so why would he play into that? As for Newt..Seriously? IMO, It was an excellent speech and I agree with #3, #5, & #7. Mitt DID get a standing ovation at the end and though it may disappoint some "so-called" conservatives, the only thing "sagging" are their complaining-attitudes about Mitt Romney and this Election..Get over it.. Mitt did a great job! Can't wait 'til he is President!

I agree with poster 14 as I taped his speech. I thought he looked very "presidential" and spoke with ease and yes, they gave him a standing "o". Romney has class where Obama has an ego and is trying to save his sorry self.

Don't fret the fact that he's sucking up to Clinton. It's the business man in Mitt. They'll do that. They never want to alienate anyone.

Just listen to Romney speak. Can you imagine Obama saying this, and saying it with such clarity and eloquence?

Watched a part of the Gov. speech live. He has the message. Changing IF I become president to a positive WHEN I become president.

A snarky, pointless article obviously written by an Obama fan at Reuters filled will all the usual democrat talkin-points du jour. To all the LDotters and others hyperventilating over this, just remember: There used to be a thing called 'class' in politics. Whereas, you don't inject political criticisms at a ' non-political' event. Yes, Obama and other democrats have thrown most of that out the window, and cannot sink any lower than they already are. So why should Mitt Romney want to sink down with them? There are a lot of people that want some form of civility to return to politics. They sure aint gonna get it from Obama.
