| Did the sacked diplomatic mission in Libya fail to meet basic security standards set by the State Department and US law? Well, it’s not like the American consulate in Benghazi had any special security needs from its location in eastern Libya, where terrorist networks have mingled into militias, and where US intelligence had a vital need. Oh, wait …. The U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, was operating under a lower security standard than a typical consulate when it was attacked this month, according to State Department officials.

It's pretty clear that the consulate at Benghazi had no effective security, and relied on hired locals who ran away when they noticed that the radical Islamists were going to attack the place.

Miraculously the border between Mexico and Arizona has suddenly been declared substantially free of illegal crossers. Having announced last year that more illegal entrants had been caught and deported, the Department of Homeland Security recently has noted that the illegal immigration that previously had been such a problem for Arizona was now far reduced. As I noted earlier, yesterday’s Senate votes on the Manchin-Toomey amendment as well as other provisions ended the chances that any gun control legislation will pass Congress this year. While Democrats like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and California Senator Dianne Feinstein have vowed to keep pushing for assault weapon bans and other proposals that have zero chance of passage, from this point forward the debate will be conducted solely with an eye toward public opinion and next year’s midterm election, not any specific legislation. The Gang of Eight’s “comprehensive” immigration-reform bill contains a number of superficially attractive security mandates: It would require the federal government to have 100 percent “situational awareness” of the border, to catch 90 percent of illegal border-crossers in high-traffic areas, to establish a tracking system to address the problem of those who enter the country illegally but overstay their visas, etc. So attractive are those goals that we have supported them in the past, on the many occasions upon which the government has promised to achieve them. Disappointingly, Washington keeps failing to deliver on its promises.

After extracting only the most minimal tax hike from Republicans, crying wolf and losing on the sequester and then getting smacked down on anti-gun legislation you, can understand how Democrats may be a little down in the dumps. Well, here are some more worries for them to ponder: 1. Complaining about and name-calling the “shameful” senators who opposed the background checks on guns depresses turnout and fundraising, leading to losses in red state races critical for Democrats to hold the Senate in 2014. 2. Look, I’m happy to talk about the different approaches Fox and MSNBC took to the gun debate. Frankly, I think it reflects quite well on Fox, as New York Times media reporter Brian Stelter’s complaint against Fox illustrates. Fox is usually accused by other media sources of cheerleading for a conservative cause, but in this case, Stelter points out Fox didn’t cover the gun debate as much, or as emotionally, as MSNBC did. As a Fox News Contributor, I’ve talked about guns probably four times in the last several months, at least once (maybe twice)

A Saudi student questioned in connection to the bombing of the Boston Marathon is not being deported, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a House panel Thursday. “I am unaware of anyone who is being deported for national security concerns at all related to Boston. I don’t know where that rumor came from,” Napolitano said. Administration officials told The Hill on Thursday that news reports about the student injured in the bombing are confusing him with another student from Saudi Arabia who was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for violating his visa.

While the media are bearing the brunt of public skepticism over the handling of the Boston bombing, the behavior of government is also eroding public trust. Yesterday´s promised but cancelled news briefing is just one symptom. Andrew McCarthy of PJM notes that "Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday´s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon," and that part of it is the natural outgrowth of the desire of investigators to keep the details of their investigations secret, so as not to alert suspects.
