| Conservatives had hoped that Mitt Romney’s choice of House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (Wis.) as his running mate would make Romney act more like Ryan — bold, specific, confident. Instead, in the six weeks since Ryan became the GOP vice presidential nominee — and particularly in the three weeks since the Republican National Convention — there has been mounting concern among Republicans that the pick has made Ryan look more like Romney — vague, cautious and limited to preset talking points.

If there were an alternate universe where OP gets to pick the nominee, I suspect I would find it a congenial place. Since I live in a universe where my choices are Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, my vote goes to Mitt. None of which should preclude anyone from offering their candid assessment of current events. It’s bad enough that RNC Chairman Reince Priebus has decided to continue the relationship with failed Romney consultants Targeted Victory to send the RNC’s mass emails. What’s so harrowing is the cynicism and sloppiness Targeted Victory brings to the table to fulfill that contract. One would think that Targeted Victory, in fulfilling the RNC email contract, would take extreme care and would want to remove any taint of the Romney campaign from the RNC emails. (Targeted Victory invoiced the failed Romney campaign for over $17 million.) But one would be wrong in making that assumption.

Yet somehow… in some strange, perhaps not so mysterious fashion… each son sounds… like… yes indeed: Dad 2.0. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush sounds like ex-President Dad George H.W. At the Conservative Political Action Conference last weekend, the nation’s largest annual gathering of conservatives, many speculated that the GOP might be veering in a more libertarian direction—or at least influential leaders within the party might be prodding it or might be anxious for it to go in that direction. The air has been full of 10th-anniversary Iraq war retrospectives. One that caught my eye was a smart piece by Tom Curry, national affairs writer for NBC News, who wrote of one element of the story, the war´s impact on the Republican Party: "The conflict not only transformed" the GOP, "but all of American politics." It has, but it´s an unfinished transformation. Did the Iraq war hurt the GOP? Yes. The war, and the crash of ´08, half killed it. It´s still digging out, and whether it can succeed is an open question.

Since he first became a presidential candidate, President Obama must have spent millions of dollars in legal expenses to combat dozens of so-called "birther" challenges seeking the original documents pertaining to his birth. As president, he famously issued an electronic document on the White House website in 2011; the document purported to be his long-form birth certificate, though it is apparently a forgery. In addition, he has taken great pains to hide the paper trail of passport records, college transcripts, and other data -- all of which a prospective employer might require of a job applicant.

Yet until late last week, much of the national media was silent as testimony about Gosnell’s alleged “house of horrors” abortion clinic rolled out. Much of the media attention outside Philadelphia, in fact, centered on how little media attention the story was receiving outside Philadelphia.
