| Like many razor-sharp 86-year-olds, the Queen must spend an awful lot of time wondering what the hell became of the Britain she knew in her youth, and of all those commonsense values and that basic decency which saw us through trials like the Second World War. Unlike the rest of her generation, she is constitutionally prevented from saying this aloud. But just occasionally her private views slip out. And when they do, my how you wish she was actually running the country herself rather than leaving it to idiots like her useless fifth cousin Dave. Take her views on the

Why, because we would offend World Opinion, that's why. We would not want to make Muslims angry. We must tread carefully in the path of appeasement, because if we cower in the corner, then they won't hurt us. Surrendering in advance always worked so well (sarcasm off). Because, to put it simply, the folks in charge in Great Britain are feckless twits!

In 1897, British forces launched a bloody campaign against Pashtun tribesmen on the North West Frontier. [Snip] Winston Churchill was conspicuous riding a grey charger when the 2nd Brigade of the Bengal Lancers moved out from Inayat Kila at 6am and headed for the Mohmand Valley. He had bought his horse at an auction of the effects of a junior officer who had been killed earlier in the campaign. By choosing to ride a grey, Churchill was making sure that no one could fail to notice his endeavours were he to find himself in the thick of the action.

I went to a lapdancing club once and it didn´t end in divorce. Nor did my children weep bitter tears as to what had become of their father. Nor did the moral foundations of the world collapse. What happened was this: I went into a lapdancing club with some other blokes, saw some attractive girls showing off their rude bits, contributed through the medium of tips and drinks purchases towards their mortgage repayments/university education/summer holiday, and then, afterwards, I went home. And do you know what? I expect there one or two other people reading this who can tell

One of the most disgusting serial killers in American history is standing trial in Philadelphia at the moment--and, since it’s happening in the US, where reporting restrictions are light, the media are free to discuss his case. Only they haven’t--at least, not until recently, and even when the crimes are reported, they haven’t merited many headlines. Which is horrifying, when you consider what the killer is accused of. I’m going to leave out the nastiest details--but, seriously, if you don’t want to feel sick to your stomach, look away now. Dr Kermit Gosnell, 72, “regularly and illegally

The US economy expanded by 2.5pc in the first three months of the year, though a sharp fall in government spending and tepid growth in March meant the rebound from a lacklustre fourth quarter was weaker than expected. The 2.5pc annual rise in US gross domestic product (GDP) comes after growth stalled at 0.4pc in the fourth quarter, according to the US Commerce Department. However, the increase missed economists´ expectations for a 3pc rise. The first quarter expansion was driven by a 3.2pc rise in consumer spending, which accounts for around 70pc of US economic activity

Former French President and pop singer wife Carla Bruni gave America´s first couple more than $40,000 worth of gifts in a single year, it emerged today. Presents included a designer Hermes golf bag and Baccarat crystal statuettes of players, according to newly released records. The incredible generosity will not only further the Sarkozy´s Bling-Bling reputation, but confirm that he presided over one of the most spendthrift presidencies in French history. Last year, the Department for Education asked a firm of accountants to trawl its vast pupil database and find the secret of great state schools. Deloitte had access to the records of almost half a million pupils, factoring in everything from postcodes to ethnicity.[Snip] When the results came back, the conclusion was extraordinary. As one would expect, schools marked “outstanding” tended to achieve the best results. Poverty mattered, but not as much as Deloitte had expected. The biggest surprise, though, was the money: no matter how you split the figures, the amount spent didn’t seem to make the blindest bit

The mind goes numb. Spanish unemployment jumped by yet another 237,000 people in the first quarter to 6.2 million, or 27.2pc. This is equivalent to roughly 8.3 million in Britain, or 39 million in the United States. The country is losing 3,581 jobs a day. There are 1.9m households where no member of the family has a job. As you can see from this graphic, the rate has reached 36.8pc in Andalusia, Spain´s most populous region. The national rate of unemployed youth is 57.2pc, rising to 70pc in the Canaries.

A great speech today by former President George W. Bush, with a firm emphasis on the principles of freedom, both at home and abroad. Unfortunately, freedom is a word which doesn’t feature very prominently in the lexicon of today’s US administration, with its obsession with big government and the growing role of the State, as well as a propensity to appease dictatorial regimes on the world stage and ignore the plight of political dissidents in places like Iran. In Bush’s words: My deepest conviction, the guiding principle of the administration, is that the United States of America

The medical staff who saved the life of Boston terror suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev feel deep anxiety about what they have done. That is the honest assessment of Dr. Richard Wolfe, who along with other emergency medicine staff at Boston´s Beth Israel Hospital rescued the seriously wounded teenage terror suspect on Friday. Dr. Wolfe recounted how in the aftermath of the young man´s stabilization, the nurses were hit by a serious dilemma - ´They look on the perpetrator as someone absolutely horrible and ask themselves, ´What have we done? We just saved him.´ ´Some nurses started rethinking,´ Staff has repaired headline

On Wednesday, Theresa May, the Home Secretary, with support from Germany, Austria and Holland wrote to the European Commission demanding tighter restrictions on access to welfare benefits and other state-funded services for EU migrants. On Friday, the commission responded with a proposal for a new directive to "make it easier for people to exercise their rights in practice" in defiance of British claims that the current rules on free movement are being abused by migrants. "With much higher levels of unemployment in some member states than others at the moment, it is all the more important to make it easier

"As long as we´ve got to fight to make sure women have access to quality, affordable health care, and as long as we´ve got to fight to protect a woman´s right to make her own choices about her own health, I want you to know that you´ve also got a president who´s going to be right there with you, fighting every step of the way," said Obama. The Patrick administration clamped down the lid yesterday on Herald requests for details of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s government benefits, citing the dead terror mastermind’s right to privacy. Across the board, state agencies flatly refused to provide information about the taxpayer-funded lifestyle for the 26-year-old man and his brother and accused accomplice Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. On EBT card status or spending, state welfare spokesman Alec Loftus would only say Tamerlan Tsarnaev, his wife and 3-year-old daughter received benefits that ended in 2012. He declined further comment.

Two unnamed U.S. officials have told the Associated Press that the surviving suspect in the Boston bombings was unarmed when police captured him hiding inside a boat in a neighborhood back yard. The report contradicts the Boston police department´s own account of Dzhokar Tsarnaev´s capture on Friday - after commissioner Ed Davies described a firefight between him and officers before the terror suspect was captured. The New York Times also said an M4 rifle had been found on the boat - another claim contradicted by the latest revelations. Officers had originally said they had exchanged gunfire

During an April 24 address to the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), Attorney General Eric Holder told the crowd that “creating a pathway to earned citizenship” is a critical element of any comprehensive immigration reform plan. He said that establishing legal status for the nation’s estimated 11 million illegal immigrants is a “matter of civil and human rights.” “Creating a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million unauthorized immigrants in this country is essential,” Holder said to applause. “The way we treat our friends and neighbors who are undocumented by creating a mechanism for

Since the Boston bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was captured, there’s been quite a debate over his Miranda rights and how to treat him — given that he’s a United States citizen. An Associated Press report out this morning is sure to add fuel to the fire. As soon as he was read his Miranda rights, it says, Tsarnaev stopped talking. The report notes that Tsarnaev was read his rights 16 hours after his interrogation had began. Then, he fell silent: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev immediately stopped talking after a magistrate judge and a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s office entered his

Tuesday morning, a peculiar announcement trickled out of the White House press office: President Barack Obama would be holding a moment of silence for the victims of the Boston bombings. At the White House. By himself. No press or other intruders allowed. That Obama assumed Americans would want an iconic photo of him privately mourning the victims of the bombings was emblematic of a kind of hubris that has enveloped the president and his White House as the president commences his second term.

The new logo for the University of Connecticut’s sports teams is a terrifying husky dog that calls to mind images of sexual assault, says one student. The new logo was unveiled last week, receiving mixed-to-negative reviews from UConn fans who preferred the older, cuter husky dog. But one student went much further, criticizing the new, meaner logo for being a pro-rape symbol. In an open letter to UC President Susan Herbst, self-described feminist student Carolyn Luby wrote that the redesigned team logo will intimidate women and empower rape culture. UConn basketball coach Geno Auriemma said the logo

This time, it’s of GOP pollster and frequent Fox News analyst Frank Luntz remarking that Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, and other right-wing talk radio hosts are “problematic” for the Republican Party’s efforts to reach out to other demographics and to fight the polarization of politics. The video was recorded on an iPhone while Luntz delivered a College Republicans-sponsored speech at the University of Pennsylvania earlier this week. Most of his speech reportedly consisted of his thoughts on how words matter — for

Are you alarmed by the counterterrorism failures increasingly evident as we learn more about the Boston terror attack? Don’t be. Former CIA director Michael Hayden has helpfully explained, “This tragedy is the new normal.” Are you surprised that a whole city was ordered to “shelter in place” as one “knockoff jihadi,” in Vice President Biden’s term, roamed the streets? Don’t be. It’s the new normal. Are you shocked by the Obama administration’s dissembling in response to terror attacks in Benghazi? Don’t be naïve. It’s the new normal. As Obamacare was winding its way through the Senate in 2009, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) slipped in an amendment requiring that members of Congress, and their staff, enroll in Obamacare’s health insurance exchanges. The idea was simple: that if Congress was going to impose Obamacare upon the country, it should have to experience what it is imposing firsthand. But now, word comes that Congress is quietly seeking to rescind that provision of the law, because members fear that staffers who face higher insurance costs will leave the Hill. The news has sparked outrage

The one clear thing that came out of last week´s chaotic activity in Boston, Massachusetts is that real reporters were missing. For that matter, they´ve been missing since last year´s attack in Benghazi. From Benghazi, the Gosnell abortion trial, gun control debates, immigration and then the Boston Marathon bombings, television news reporting has become positively painful to watch. The First Amendment to the Constitution grants freedom of the press but this was supposed to endow it with a responsibility to be the people´s watchdog. The modern Fourth Estate represented by the mainstream media has made a mockery of this privilege.
