Son of a Bigot

As the pastor of the much-reviled Westboro Baptist Church, Fred Phelps has become synonymous with hatred. The pastor and his family make it a point to carry signs at the funerals saying, “Thank God for Dead Soldiers.” They show up to media-friendly events with signs that read, “God Hates F**s.” Nate Phelps is the sixth of Fred’s 13 children, and he has the scars to show for it. He describes his father as verbally and physically abusive. When he was 18, Nate ran away from home and from the fundamentalist Calvinist religion in which he was raised.

As the months and years go by, I grow more and more aware of the blessed environment of my family of origin (as psychologists say). My family is not perfect, but my parents are good and decent people who worked hard and raised us with love and discipline. My heart hurts for this man, and for the countless others like him. I pray that the Hound of heaven tracks him down and transforms this guy's life, and his family's. God bless him.

Their "religion" isn't close to Calvinism.

There are great theological differences in Phelps' brand of Christianity and Islam. There are also many similarities in the way both he and Moslems preach and practice their respective faiths.

I have a dear friend who fled a cult, taking her children with her. Her husband is still in it. This man's description of his childhood fits her story to a T.

There is a link embedded in the story that provides an audio of the interview with Nate. My reading time is limited in the morning, but being able to listen to the interview was enriching. Too bad so many here will miss that recording.

Just because Fred Phelps calls himself Westboro Baptist Church doesn't make him Baptist or a church. It's not fundamentalist Calvinist, it's not Christian, it's not anything religious. What Fred Phelps did was child and spouse abuse and he taught too many of his children to do the same. He's of the devil, not Christ!

When are the media ever going to notice that Phelps doesn't even *call* himself Christian?

What does Fred he actually believe? It is, somehow, even weirder than you expected:

In fact, it appears that he hand his tribe are working on a new religion altogether, complete with new scriptures.

Members of WBC generally avoid the name "Christian" when referring to themselves, preferring the mysterious term "Tachmonite."

The Tachmonites believe Phelps is "the last prophet," with the power to determine who will be damned and who will be saved. They themselves, as followers of Phelps, also have the power to condemn souls to hell. Most people are destined for hell, but "Good Samaritans" who help the Tachmonites (for example, police officers who prevent counter-protesters from assaulting them) may be offered an indeterminate "reward" for their good conduct.

They've written their own scriptures, which are divided into two categories: "delectable epics" and "letters to heretics." The "delectable epics" (the term is the group's) are based loosely on Acts in the New Testament. The epics detail the Tachmonites' various protests against gays, President Bush, Elton John concerts, and the military and portray the Tachmonites alternately as invincible "super heroes" and defenseless victims of brutal rage. Some of the epics are in prose, and some in poetry.

And there's more (at the link)

This is the only 'Christian' effort that makes the news. Dick Gordon, Salon and the rest of the lsm have no clue what Christian efforts look like or who benefits or the costs that the work entails. Disgusting!

NEW BEDFORD — Police say three people have been taken into custody for questioning at a housing complex where the younger Boston Marathon bombing suspect may have lived. New Bedford Police Lt. Robert Richard says a private complex of off-campus housing at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth was searched by federal authorities Friday evening. Richard says the FBI took two males and one female into custody for questioning. He says 19-year-old suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev may have resided at or was affiliated with the housing complex. He is registered at the school.

No one in Boston will forget the drama of the manhunt for two brothers suspected in the Marathon bombings. Nor will anyone forget the courage of the officers involved, including Sean Collier of the MIT police, who lost his life, and MBTA Transit officer Richard H. Donahue Jr., who was seriously injured. On Thursday night and Friday, residents of Greater Boston experienced the type of siege that most see only in movies. All along, though, the cooperation among authorities, victims, and an intensely engaged public made it clear there was no way for the bombers to escape

All in all, it’s been a horrible week, and today has been no better. But this morning, a little beam of light amid the darkness. Ruslan Tsarniof, uncle of the Boston Bombers, came out of his house and, facing a gaggle of reporters, showed the best of America. Here was a confused, grieving man, who managed nonetheless to articulate in the heat of a difficut momement what is best about immigrants in the United States. Tsarniof praised assimilation and, crucially, he highlighted the potential problems that arise when newcomers refuse to “settle.”

If you thought President Obama was outraged after the Senate killed the plan to expand background checks on guns, you should have seen some members of the press. Even by the standards of today’s partisan media environment, the response has been noteworthy. Television hosts, editorial boards, and even some reporters have aggressively criticized and shamed the 46 Senators who opposed the plan, while some have even taken to actively soliciting the public to contact them directly. The decision by some members of the media to come down so firmly on one side of a policy debate has only served

Flash back to 1972. Dr. Harvey Karman, a star of the abortion movement, came up with a bold publicity stunt. The 1972 "mass Mother´s Day abortion," as the Chicago Tribune described it, was designed to show that late-term abortions could be easy and safe. The site of this demonstration was the Philadelphia abortion clinic of Dr. Kermit Gosnell. The media was alerted, and television cameras rolled in. Arriving by bus were 18 pregnant women, half of them teenagers, who would undergo a new abortion technique called the "Super Coil." A Los Angeles Times article in April 1972 --

WASHINGTON — The Boston Marathon bombing marked a watershed moment that counterterrorism officials and specialists have dreaded for years: the use of multiple “improvised explosive devices,’’ or IEDs, to inflict mass casualties on US soil. Islamic militant groups routinely have used makeshift bombs — detonated nearly simultaneously — to kill civilian bystanders as well as military personnel from Iraq and Israel to Russia and Afghanistan. But until Monday’s explosions at the finish line in Copley Square, such street-level detonations targeting sidewalk or marketplace crowds had not occurred in the United States. “The sad thing is that finally someone

Authorities on Tuesday revealed little new information about the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon, the most high-profile bombing on U.S. soil in more than a decade and a tragedy that presents a new test for President Obama. Obama, like all Americans, is standing by, waiting for answers as to who planted two bombs improvised from pressure cookers at the finish line of the storied race, and why. Three Americans were killed in Monday´s attack and more than 170 others were injured. "Anytime bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror," Obama said,

Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes--six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either. Why did the no-brainer bill fail? Four reasons:

We are still speculating about virtually everything right now, but I feel as though I need to explain why I find the quick and easy conversation about Muslims being radicalized in America to be so illogical and laced with bigotry. Of course, there is a global violent jihadist movement, loosely organized, that wants to recruit young men to influence policies at home and abroad and perhaps usher in the global caliphate. That ideology motivates some Muslims to kill innocent people. But you´re allowed to be a radical Muslim in America.

While the media are bearing the brunt of public skepticism over the handling of the Boston bombing, the behavior of government is also eroding public trust. Yesterday´s promised but cancelled news briefing is just one symptom. Andrew McCarthy of PJM notes that "Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday´s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon," and that part of it is the natural outgrowth of the desire of investigators to keep the details of their investigations secret, so as not to alert suspects.
